ABSTRACT

GUNAWAN, SAMUEL FAITH. (2021). Discourse Analysis of Swear Words Uttered by Rick Sanchez in Rick and Morty Season 1. Yogyakarta: Department of English Letters, Faculty of Letters, Universitas Sanata Dharma.

Swear words are part of human communication in their society. The use of swear words in a conversation is a way for people to express themselves. That is why swear words are a unique phenomenon to be analyzed. This study focuses on swear words from Rick Sanchez, the main character, in a TV series namely Rick and Morty season 1. This series is about the adventure of Rick Sanchez, an overweight visionary and reckless physicist, with his grandson Morty, an insecure 14-year-old kid. They travel to limitless dimensions together and trigger mayhem and cause a lot of trouble. This study analyzes the type and purpose of swearing by Rick Sanchez in Rick and Morty season 1. This study applies discourse analysis as the main approach. Two theories are used to support the analysis in this study. The first theory is the theory about the type of swear words by Battistella (2015). Based on this theory, there are four types of swear words: epithet, profanity, vulgarity, and obscenity. The other theory is the theory about the purpose of swearing by Pinker (2007). In this theory, the purpose of swearing is categorized by five namely cathartic swearing, abusive swearing, idiomatic swearing, descriptive swearing, and emphatic swearing. In this study, the researcher uses qualitative method as the method of the study. This study applies population methods to gather the data. This study focuses on Rick Sanchez’s utterances that contain swear words. The data collection is taken from Rick Sanchez’s utterances in Rick and Morty season 1 that contain swear words. After collecting the data, the researcher categorizes each data based on Battistella’s (2015) theory to determine each type of swear words. To determine the purpose of swearing of each data, the researcher categorizes it based on Pinker’s (2007) theory. Based on the discussion and analysis, the researcher found four types of swear words that are used by Rick Sanchez in Rick and Morty season 1. Those types are epithet, profanity, vulgarity, and obscenity. Vulgarity is the most frequent while epithet is the least type of word that is used by Rick Sanchez in this show. The researcher also found that there are five categories of the purpose of swearing. Those are cathartic swearing, abusive swearing, idiomatic swearing, descriptive swearing, and emphatic swearing. Abusive swearing is the most frequent purpose, while swearing descriptively is the least frequent that Rick Sanchez uses in Rick and Morty season 1.

ABSTRAK

GUNAWAN, SAMUEL FAITH. (2021). Discourse Analysis of Swear Words Uttered by Rick Sanchez in Rick and Morty Season 1. Yogyakarta: Department of English Letters, Faculty of Letters, Universitas Sanata Dharma.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

English is one of the most used languages in the world. The fact that English is the international language could not be argued for how many people in the world speak English (Genç & Bada 2010). In this globalization era, people could learn and know English and English culture through many media. Film, songs, and books are one of the many media that can be used to learn English. Because of that many

Indonesians insert some English vocabulary throughout their utterances. English swear word is an example of how Indonesian use it in their language expression.

The practices of swearing are part of human communication in their society.

The use of swear words in daily communication is one of the ways people express themselves. The reason for using swear words is because there are some expression that are not descriptive enough to express the speaker’s feels. Cursing helps people to verbally show powerful feelings in a manner that is difficult for non-curse terms to do (Jay 2000, p.243). It can be simplified that the use of swearing is not only for destructive purposes but also expressing more emotion like happiness, shock, or sadness.

For more example, swear words could be found in entertainment. Mostly, film and TV series serve explicit content to adult audiences that contain swear words. Because of that, people tend to use swear words as their new way of expressing themselves. Although the swear words have negative and offensive

1

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

2

content and meaning, swear words already a part of human conversation. It could be proven by how people rather use swear words to express their feelings instead of using a word that has a positive connotation (Jay 2000, p.243).

This analysis will be more central to the conversation as the data. Because of that, discourse analysis will be a suitable approach to explain the phenomenon.

Discourse analysis focuses on the relation between the language and its context

(Paltridge, 2006, p.2). When using swear words in conversation, not all the word should be interpreted literary. Some of the swear words could have contextual meaning when it is used in some cases.

The word swear has two specific meanings in the Oxford and Cambridge dictionaries, one connected with oath-taking and – by extension – with making solemn commitments, the other with using 'violent language particularly in frustration' (Ljung, 2011, p.3). In conclusion, swearing is a type of language expression by using some negative or offensive way to express it.

Swear words also have a lot of variety. Based on the word references, swear words could be categorized into four categories. The categories refer to the religious and supernatural matter of terminology, word that describe human waste, the word that refers to sexual activity, and word that represent sexual organs or anatomy

(Jdetawy, 2019). Based on those categories, swear words then being classified into some type based on the characteristic. Based on Battistella (2005, p. 72), there are four types of swearing. The four types are epithet, profanity, vulgarity, and obscenity.

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

3

Linguistically, swear words take our focus and pressure us to take the negative connotations into account (Mohr 2013, p.6). People tend to swear rather than use some other word that have positive connotations to express the situation.

It all happens because sometimes using swear words could be more accurate to express themselves rather than using other words that contain positive connotations.

According to Jay (2000, p.243), cursing and swearing may be an unconscious mechanism. It happens on the part of the brain in the right hemisphere and subcortical areas. Cursing in reaction to shock or annoyance is one form of automatic cursing. Propositional cursing, on the other hand, is purposive rather than incidental. Proposal cursing, for example, is saying the joke and sexual talk.

In this research, the researcher chooses a TV series titled Rick and Morty season 1 which is out in 2013 by an internet streaming service, Adult Swim. TV series is a television program that consists of several episodes. Each episode is telling different sequences of the story. The reason why the researcher chooses TV series is that TV series contains several episodes which in each episodes has different theme and plot. Because of that, each episode has a different context from other episodes. Context of each episode is important to determine the interpretation.

This series features the endless exploits of Rick Sanchez, an overweight visionary and reckless physicist, with his grandson Morty, an insecure 14-year-old kid. They conquer the limitless dimensions together; causing mayhem and getting into trouble. The reason for picking this series because this series has 9.2 IMBd ratting and scored 96% from review. Another reason is this series has a lot of sources to analyzes swear words. As it rated TV-14, This show uses a

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

4

lot of swear words in their conversation. This series is more realistic and more explicit in its storytelling and character conversation.

Based on the finding, the researcher developed a hypothesis. The researcher believes that the same types of swear words could have different purposes in Rick and Morty season 1. The researcher will also only focus on the use of swear words by Rick Sanchez, the main character. For this analysis, the researcher will apply

Battistella’s (2005) theory about the type of swear words and Jdetawy’s (2019) theory for the purpose of the swear word.

B. Problem Formulation

In this research, there two questions are formulated to limit the scope of this research. The questions are listed below:

1. What are the types of swear words uttered by Rick Sanchez in Rick and Morty

season 1?

2. What is the purpose of Rick Sanchez using swear words in Rick and Morty

season 1?

C. Objectives of the Study

By seeing the problem formulations, there are two objectives of the study.

First, this research classifies the type of swear words that are uttered by Rick

Sanchez in Rick and Morty season 1. Swear words can be classified into categories based on their types. The second objective, this paper find out the purpose of the

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

5

swear used by Rick Sanchez in Rick and Morty season 1. The purpose of swear words could be determined based on the context of the conversation.

D. Definition of Terms

Term definitions are provided to describe words that reader may misinterpret.

Swear word means ‘violent language’ (Ljung 2011, p.3). In addition, Jay

(2000) stated that swear words could express a variety of kinds of expressions towards other people. The speaker’s expression will affect the interpretation of the swear words. Swear words in this study refer to offensive or rude word(s) that uttered by Rick Sanchez in Rick and Morty season 1.

Discourse analysis is a study that focuses on the relation between the language and its context (Paltridge 2006, p.2). Paltridge (2006) also added that discourse analysis is a method to explain the process of how people interpreted someone’s conversation based on the context and circumstances. In this study, discourse analysis is used as an approach to examining the swear words.

Rick Sanchez, or as known as Rick, is the main character of Rick and Morty

TV series. Rick Sanchez is an overweight visionary and reckless physicist who claims himself to be the smartest person in the galaxy. In this study, Rick Sanchez utterance is the main focus for the analysis.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF LITERATURE

In this chapter, the researcher exposes the review of literature in three parts.

In the first part of this chapter, the researcher discusses some studies related to swear words as their object of study. In the second part, the researcher explains the theories that will be used in this study. In the final part of this chapter, the researcher discusses the reason for choosing such theories for the study.

A. Review of Related Studies

This study uses previous research as references related to the study or analysis of swear words. The first research is Erlinawati’s “Swear Words and

Reason for Using Them in David Mamet’s Glengarry Glen Ross”. This study is an undergraduate thesis written by Erlinawati (2018) that discusses swear words and their reasons to use it in a play titled Glengarry Glen Ross by David Mamet. This research focuses on the swear words that are uttered by the five main characters in that play.

The relevance of Erlinawati (2018) research and this study is that both analyze swear words as the main object of the study. The difference is Erlinawati

(2018) examines a drama as the source, while this study uses animated series as the source of data. Drama is different from the animated series because drama is performed live in front of an audience. Both studies also identify the type of swear word that has been uttered by its character. The difference is that this study

6

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

7

does not try to identify the reason for swearing, instead this study identifies the purpose of using the swear words.

The second research is a journal article by Johan Tobias Kristanto and

Priyanto Ardi “Swear Words in Bad Boys II: A Semantic Analysis”. This article discusses the function of swear words based on the word meaning itself in the movie

Bad Boys II. This research focuses on the semantic aspect of swear words. Every swear word that is used has its own references to something.

The article by Johan Tobias Kristanto and Priyanto Ardi has a different approach from this study. The article uses semantic analysis while this study uses discourse analysis. Despite the use of different approaches, both studies discuss the swear word type and classification. The difference is the article uses the semantic approach to identify the references of the swear words of the movie Bad Boys: II.

The third research is also a journal article by Octavia Wulandari (2017) “The

Use of Swear Words in Pewdiepie’s Youtube Video”. This article discusses the swear words that are used by Pewdiepie (Felix Kjellberg) in his Youtube video. In order to analyze the data, this article applied the descriptive qualitative method.

This article concludes that the use of swear words by Pewdiepie in his Youtube

Video is for drawing the viewer’s attention.

Compare to this study, Octavia Wulandari’s (2017) article has a different object of study. In the article, the object is a Youtube video by Pewdiepie. Youtube is an online video sharing platform that makes people able to upload a video to it.

The similarity between the article and this study is both apply the qualitative method

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

8

as the methodology in analyzing the data. This article helps the researcher as a reference for conducting the qualitative method in this study.

The fourth research is an undergraduate thesis by Rebecca Puspa Crymasari

(2018) entitled “Swear Words Uttered by The Main Character in Ted 2 Movie”.

This research examines the use of swear words in a movie. This research applies discourse analysis as the approach. This article concludes that the use of swear words has the purpose of conveying an emotion. The use of swear words might be triggered by social aspects.

The research by Rebecca Puspa Crymasari (2017) has the same approach as this study. Both are using discourse analysis as the approach. The research also applied a qualitative method in order to analyze the data. The difference between this study and the research in this study is using animated series, which means it contains some episodes.

The fifth research is an undergraduate thesis by Albertus Rahadion Astoto

(2016) entitled “The Application of McEnery’s Classification of Bad Language

Words in The Raid Redemption and The Raid 2: “Berandal” movies”. This research use McEnery’s classification and Pinker’s theory to analyze the swear word in two

Indonesian movies. This research also finds seven out of sixteen categories of

McEnery’s classification in those two Indonesian movies.

This fifth research use the same theory to analyze the data. This study uses

Pinker’s (2007) theory to help the researcher conduct the study. The five categories of swearing by Pinker (2007) are used in this study to find out the purpose of the swearing. The theory must be connected with the context of the conversation and

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

9

the story to give a precise purpose of the speaker. It is necessary to know the context of the conversation before determining the purpose of the speaker intended to say.

In conclusion, the four related research will help the researcher develop this study. The first two related research is a reference for this study to answer the problem formulation about the type and purpose of swear words. Erlinawati’s research (2018), Johan Tobias Kristanto & Priyanto Ardi’s journal article (2018), and Astoto’s (2016) research gives an insight into how to categorize swear words and finding their meaning and purpose. The third and fourth research help the researcher to apply the approach and methodology. The article by Octavia

Wulandari (2017) could be the reference for the implementation of a qualitative method for the data analysis. Rebecca Puspa Crymasari (2018) research helps the researcher apply discourse analysis as the approach in this study.

B. Review of Related Theories

In this part, the researcher examines the review of related theories. All those related theories are used to analyze the object in this study. there are four theories that are used in this study. the first one is the theory of swear words by Ljung (2011).

The second theory is the theory about discourse analysis proposed by (Paltridge,

2006). The third theory is from Battistella (2005) about the type of swear words.

The last theory is about the purpose of swear words by Pinker (2007).

1. Swear Word

Swear word is a word that is considered rude, offensive, and have a bad manner if it is used in society. Ljung (2011, p.3) stated that swear word refers to

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

10

offensive or violent language. In addition, Jay (2000, p.9) stated that swear word is an offensive language that could express a variety kind of expression and emotion towards other people. The use of swear words is not only for insulting others or showing bad manners. Some of them are used for expressing strong emotion. The result of the use of swear words could be different. It could be positive as in joking or negative as in sexual harassment (Jay, 2000, p.10). The result of the use of swear words is determined by the person who receives the swear words.

Jdetawy (2019) proposed there are four categorizes of swear words based on the word reference. The first category is the word that refers to religious and supernatural matter or terminology (hell, Christ). The second one is the word that describes human waste (, piss). The third is the word that refers to sexual activity

(fuck, jerk off). The last category is the word that represents sexual organs or anatomy (dick, pussy).

a. Type of Swear Word

To classify swear words, there are some types that categorizes swear words into several types. This categorization is based on Battistella's (2005) theory about the type of swear word. Based on Battistella (2005, p. 72), there are four types of swearing. The four types are epithet, profanity, vulgarity, and obscenity. Each type of swear word has unique characteristics and differences.

i. Epithet

Epithet is the word that describes someone or something in an offensive or rude way. In other words, epithet is also known as name-calling. Battistella (2005,

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

11

p. 72) suggested that epithet is a type of swear word that refers to race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, appearance, disability, or other characteristics that represent someone. Based on the Oxford dictionary, epithet also could be described as an offensive word to describe a person or group of people. For example, the word nigger has a racial/ethnic reference because the word refers to African American people. Animal names mentioning like pig or ass is also an epithet. The animal words are used to compare the listener to an animal as a form of insult. Another example is the word retarded and midget. Those two words are describing a disability and the appearance of a person in a rude manner. ii. Profanity

Any word that is related to religious and spiritual aspects is considered profanity. Profanity is a swear that uses religious terms and aspects for a non- religious purpose (Battistella, 2005, p. 72). Jdetawy (2019) added that when someone uses this type of swear words, they use it to disrespect God, religion, holy things, or more on ignorance of these matters. Blasphemy could be considered as a form of profanity. For some people, the use of profanity is an act of blasphemy.

This kind of thought is the result of some religious teaching. For example, the

Christian belief that in the 10 Commandments the use of God’s name for non- religious purposes is an act of blasphemy. The difference between profanity and blasphemy is that blasphemy is an act to ridicule or mock a religion or religious belief, teaching, or concept. Words like Goddamn, Jesus Christ, or hell are the example of profanity because the words referred to religious terms.

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

12

iii. Vulgarity

Vulgar words are the word that describes something that refers to sexuality

and dirty without using any euphemism. Vulgarity refers to terms or phrases that

describe sex-differentiating organ, anatomy, or excretory functions (Battistella,

2005, p. 72). This type uses a lewd way to describe it, such as shit, cock, pussy, or

cunt. Besides, Jdetawy (2019) stated that vulgar words are often used by uneducated

people who prefer using the offensive term of something vulgar instead of other

terms that are less rude or offensive. For example, instead of using the word penis,

some people use the word cock or dick. The word penis is more acceptable because

it is the scientific term for male sexual organ.

iv. Obscenity

Obscenity is almost the same type as vulgarity. Obscenity words have

pornographic senses that make people avoid talking about them in public. Every

word that describes any sexual activity without getting euphemism is also

considered obscenity. That is why an obscene word is really taboo to be talked in

public. The difference between obscenity and vulgarity is that obscene words are

unacceptable, impolite and considered rude to use in any situation (Battistella,

2005, p. 72). The word fuck is an example of obscenity because it describes the

action of sexual intercourse in a rude and offensive manner. To sum up, obscenity

is the most offensive word to use and not acceptable on any occasion.

b. The Purpose of Swearing

When using swear words, the speaker must have a purpose about why they

are using them. Pinker (2007), proposes five categorizations of the purpose of

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

13

swearing. This category is based on how the swear words are used in an utterance and the intention that the speaker wants to deliver. They are cathartic swearing, abusive swearing, idiomatic swearing, descriptive swearing, and emphatic swearing. Each category of the purpose of swearing is described below.

i. Cathartic Swearing

Cathartic swearing has a purpose to express personal emotions, such as anger, shock, and frustration. Pinker (2007) explains that people sometimes swear to release some tension when experience of sudden pain, frustration, or regret.

People tend to use swear words to show their expression because sometimes there are some word that are not suitable enough to describe the feeling (Mohr, 2013, p.6). The use of cathartically swearing could be in a form of an unconscious mechanism (Jay, 2000, p.243). It means some people tend to use swear words on some occasions. For example, when someone suddenly slip on the road, that person says shit or fuck. Those words are intended to show the person feeling of shock or hurt when he/ is slipping. Some examples in cathartically swearing are Holly

Shit, and Goddamn it. ii. Abusive Swearing

Abusive swearing is directed towards others. As its name, abusive, this kind of swearing has a purpose to intimidate, punish, or discredit other people (Pinker,

2007, p. 353). When people use abusive swearing, they are showing a negative emotion towards others. The feeling of anger, disappointment, or annoyance could be the trigger for someone doing an abusive swearing. In another word, the main purpose of abusive swearing is to insult someone or expressing some emotion to

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

14

someone in an offensive way. The form of this swearing could be in the type of

name-calling, racial slurs, and so on. Some example of this swearing is Go to hell,

You bastard, You Asshole, and You nigger. iii. Idiomatic Swearing

This swearing use swear word as an idiom. Term idiom refers to the fact

that the swear word being uttered could not be interpreted literary. The use of the

swear word as an idiom, the meaning of the word represents or referring to

something else (Pinker, 2007, p. 357). For example, when people say bullshit, the

speaker intentions is not talking about literary feces of an animal. The speaker is

using the term bullshit to represent something nonsense. Other example from this

swearing is Stop giving me bullshit or stop fucking around.

iv. Descriptive Swearing

Descriptive swearing occurs when people use a dysphemistic word or term

rather than the neutral one. The descriptive swearing happens sometimes for the

sake of narrative vividness or just to show anger (Pinker, 2007, p. 351). The use of

dysphemistic words or terms instead of the neutral ones could break the informal

atmosphere and give freedom to the speaker. People tend to use the rude or

offensive term instead the neutral because sometimes different choice of word could

give a different tone and context. For example, when people use the word penis in

their conversation, the context of the conversation could be leading to something

scientific but when they use the word prick or cock the context could be referring

to sex talk or insult. Another example of dysphemistic terms is the word shit over

feces, cunt over vagina, and fuck over have sex.

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

15

v. Emphatic Swearing

Empathic swearing is when people use swear words as an ‘add word’ in their conversation. Pinker (2007) stated that swearing could also be used as an adjective or adverb to intensify a conversation. In this case, the swearwords are not for people of the situation. People usually use this as ‘add word’ in their conversation. In other words, the purpose of this swearing is to emphasize something when they talk about it. When someone adds swear words to their conversation, the speaker will likely get attention from others. This could happen because society cannot accept some kind of verbal obscenity to be spoken out loud

(Rothwell, 1973, p.232). Some examples from this swearing are this fucking guy? and the black ass man!

2. Discourse Analysis

Discourse analysis is a study that focuses on finding a meaning based on the context, knowledge, and other non-linguistic aspects of the language. Discourse analysis is an analysis of the knowledge beyond the language itself (Paltridge, 2006, p.19). This type of study believes that other aspects outside a word, phrase, clause, or sentence are connected to the language in order to find the right interpretation or meaning. The main purpose of discourse analysis is to help the user in gaining a boarder understanding and insight (Paltridge, 2006, p.3).

In order to find or interpret a meaning, the context behind the language must be a consideration at first. The context could be considered as what people know from their situation. Based on Paltridge (2006), the relation between language and

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

16

context relies on the relation between the linguistic and non-linguistic aspects. In other words, the relationship is about the connection between the language itself and the social and cultural knowledge. Different situations and contexts could lead to different interpretations and meanings.

3. Turn-Taking

Turn-taking is a term in conversation when someone changing role from listener to speaker and so on. Turn-taking also could be interpreted as having the control of the right to speech (Yule, 1996, p.72). The one who has control of the conversation might give away turns, keeping them, or taking them. Every time there is a possible change of turn, their transition is applied in there and the term is called

Transition Relevance Place. Conversation happens because of the two person or more having role shifting from a speaker to listener in every sequence time.

C. Theoretical Framework

This research focuses on the swearing word uttered by Rick Sanchez in Rick and Morty season 1. It particularly focuses on the type of swear word that has been uttered by Rick Sanchez and explaining how the swear words are used by Rick

Sanchez in the context of the story. To know if a word is considered as a swear word, the researcher applied Ljung (2011) and Jdetawy (2019) theory to know the swear words category. For data collecting, the researcher applied Yule’s (1996) theory about turn- taking. The turn-taking theory is applied to know the limit of the conversation from the data source. To classify the type of swear words, Bastitella’s

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

17

(2005) theory is used in this research. The swear words uttered by Rick Sanchez will be classified into some category based on Bastitella’s (2005) theory.

Pinker’s (2007) theory is also used to explain the purpose of swear words that are used by Rick Sanchez. The discourse analysis theory from Paltridge (2006) will be used to analyze the utterances in order to find the context of the utterances.

The context of each of Rick Sanchez’s utterances will determine the purpose of swear words that are used in the utterances.

CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

In this chapter, the researcher exposes the methodology in this study. the methodology is divided into three parts. In the first part of this chapter, the researcher explains the object of this study. In the second part, the researcher discusses the approach that will be used in this study. In the final part of this chapter, the researcher exposes the methodology that is applied in this study.

A. Object of Study

This study is focusing on the analysis of the type and purpose of swear words produced by Rick Sanchez in his utterances in Rick and Morty season 1. This science fiction series features the adventure of Rick Sanchez, an arrogant scientist, with his grandson Morty. The main object of the study is taken from all the utterances of Rick Sanchez, as the main character, that contains swear words in it.

The utterances that contain swear words could be in a form of words, phrases, clauses, or sentences that are produced by Rick Sanchez in his conversation with other characters in each episode. The utterances are provided by the show in the form of a closed caption (subtitles). The utterances of Rick Sanchez are spread across 11 episodes in Rick and Morty season 1. Each episode of Rick and Morty season 1 is taken and used as the source of the data to be analyzed in this study. The whole conversation between Rick Sanchez and other characters is provided in this study to give a clear insight into the context and what happens in the conversation.

18

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

19

B. Approach of the Study

Discourse analysis is used as the approach of this study. Discourse analysis is a study that focuses on the knowledge beyond the language itself (Paltridge, 2006, p.2). This approach helps the researcher to examine the research questions which focus on the type of swear words and their purposes. When examining utterances or conversation, there is a chance that people misinterpreted them. Based on those problems, that is why discourse analysis is a suitable approach to be applied in this study. Based on discourse analysis, to interpret meaning is to know the context of the language. In order to understand more about the discourse analysis, the researcher gathers some references from books and journal articles that use discourse analysis as their main study.

C. Methodology

1. Data Collection

In order to collect the data, the researcher developed some steps to be applied in this study. Firstly, the researcher examines the conversation between

Rick Sanchez and other characters in Rick and Morty season 1 that contains 11 episodes in an online streaming service, . In this step, the researcher found out the context of the conversation like the background story and the plot of the show that is needed for the analysis. The result is the researcher found 27 of Rick

Sanchez’s utterances. The number is the result of the examination of all the 11 episodes entitled , , Anatomy Park, M. Night Shaym-Aliens!,

Meeseeks and Destroy, Rick Potion #9, Raising Gazorpazorp, ,

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

20

Something Ricked This Way Comes, Close Rick-counters of the Rick Kind, and

Ricksy Business. After examining the show and finding out the context of the conversation, the researcher took a note and make a list of any utterances of Rick

Sanchez that contain swear words in his conversation towards other characters. The researcher found 43 swear words in 27 of Rick Sanchez’s utterances that are spread from 11 episodes of Rick and Morty season 1. To classify Rick Sanchez’s utterances, the researcher applied turn-taking theory from Yule (1996). By applying this theory, the researcher could classify Rick Sanchez utterances for each sequence. Taking notes was necessary to make a list of the data collection that will be analyzed later. The researcher was helped by the closed captioning (subtitles) that have been provided in the show. The number that was shown is taken from the population of the data. There are 43 data of swear words and the data were analyzed to answer the first research question about the type of swear words. The 43 data of swear words were also analyzed to answer the second research question about the purpose of the use of swear words. Full utterances were used in analyzing the data because the context of the conversation is needed by the researcher to determine the purpose.

2. Data Analysis

In this study, the researcher will use a qualitative research methodology to analyze the data. The result of the analysis of the data will be in a form of a description and explanation about the data analysis. The qualitative research methodology intends to give a deeper understanding of the object. Because of that reason, the qualitative research methodology is suitable for this study.

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

21

The researcher uses several steps to analyze the data. Firstly, the researcher identifies the swear words in each utterance. After identifying the swear words, the researcher sorts the swear words into a list. By applying this step, the researcher gains a list of swear words for the analysis later. Secondly, to analyze the data, the researcher applies a theory to analyze the data. To answer the first research question about the type of swear words, the researcher uses the theory from Battistella

(2015). In this theory, Battistella (2015) proposed four types of swearing: epithet, profanity, vulgarity, and obscenity. By using this theory, the researcher classifies the swear words from the data collection into some category based on Battistella

(2015) theory. This step is done by comparing the data characteristics and the theory.

To make the analysis clear and easy to be understood, the researcher will classify the data in a table. The analysis uses initial letters representing the four types of swear words based on Battistella’s (2015) theory. There is “E” for epithet,

“P” for profanity, “V” for vulgarity, and “O” for obscenity. The following table shows the type of swear words by Rick Sanchez.

Table 1 - Types of Swear Words

Type Utterance Episode Swear Word E P V O

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

22

To answer the second question that focuses on the purpose of Rick

Sanchez’s use of swear words in his utterances, the researcher needs to know about the context and full conversation about what Rick Sanchez is talking about. The researcher firstly identifies all utterances of Rick Sanchez that contains swear words. This step is necesarry because there are some utterances that do not contain swear words in Rick Sanchez conversation with others character. By understanding the relationship between the utterances and their context or situation, the researcher will know how to determine the purpose of the use of swear words in Rick

Sanchez’s utterances.

After identifying Rick Sanchez’s utterances that contains swear words, the researcher then sorts the utterances into a list. To support analysis, the researcher classifies the purpose of the use of swear words based on the theory from Pinker

(2007). Based on this theory, Pinker (2007) proposed five purposes of swearing: cathartic swearing, abusive swearing, idiomatic swearing, descriptive swearing and emphatic swearing. To identify the purpose of swearing, the context of the utterances is needed. The context is in a form of a conversation between Rick

Sanchez with other character. This context is necessary in order to determine the purpose of the swearing by Rick Sanchez.

The researcher provides the utterances in the table to make the analysis easier to understand. The analysis uses initial letters to represent the four purposes of swearing which are “C” for cathartic swearing, “A” for abusive swearing, “I” for idiomatic swearing, “D” for descriptive swearing and “E” for emphatic swearing.

The following table shows the purpose of swearing by Rick Sanchez.

CHAPTER IV

ANALYSIS RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

In this chapter, the researcher presents the result and findings of the analysis.

The findings and results are based on the two research questions. The first research question is about the type of swear words uttered by Rick Sanchez. The result is there are four types of swear words. The types are epithet, profanity, vulgarity, and obscenity. The second research question is about the purpose of swear words uttered by Rick Sanchez. Based on the analysis, the researcher finds four purposes of swearing. Those are cathartical swearing, abusive swearing, idiomatic swearing, descriptive swearing, and emphatic swearing. Based on the findings, the researcher believes that different type of swear words may serve different purpose in Rick and

Morty season 1. To give a clearer understanding, the researcher provides some samples of each type of swear word. The samples are in the form of utterances or dialogues so the readers could know the source of the swear words.

A. Type of Swear Word

Based on the analysis of 43 swear words in Rick and Morty season 1, the researcher found there are four types of swear words. The types are epithet, profanity, vulgarity, and obscenity. Vulgarity is the most common type that appears in Rick and Morty season 1. After vulgarity there is obscenity then followed by

24

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

25

epithet and profanity which are the least type from Rick and Morty season 1 is profanity. The table below shows the number of swear words that have been classified into four types.

Table 3 - Types of Swear words

Type of Swear Word Frequency of Swear Words Vulgarity 17 Obscenity 11 Profanity 8 Epithet 7

Total 43

The table shows the number of swear words uttered by Rick Sanchez in Rick and Morty season 1. Vulgarity appears 17 out of 43 times in Rick and Morty season

1. The example of vulgarity is crap, bullcrap, shit, and pussy. Obscenity appears 11 times in Rick and Morty season 1. The word motherfucker and fuck are examples that belong to the obscenity type. Profanity is in third place with 8 appearances out of 43 times. The example of epithet is hell and Goddam. The last type is epithet with 7 times appearances in Rick and Morty season 1. The example of epithet is bitch and rascal. The reason why vulgar swear words are frequently used by Rick is that he is a drinker and always in drunk condition. The cause of being drunk all the time could be the reason why Rick uses vulgar words in his utterances. All four types of swear words are discussed with some examples and the context in Rick and

Morty season 1. To minimize the misunderstanding, the researcher provides a

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

26

sequence of a dialog between Rick Sanchez and other characters. This sequence of the dialog is necessary to give clearer insight and the context of the story.

1. Vulgarity

Vulgar words are the word that refers to a sexual and dirty object. The word could be the word that represents sexual organs, anatomy, or excretory functions.

In Rick and Morty season 1, Rick uses many vulgar words in his utterance. Here are some examples of how Rick uses vulgar words in his conversation.

A23 (Episode 7, 00:03:35-00:03:44) MORTY: I lost the chance to be careful, Rick, I'm a father now! You know, it's time for me to be responsible, Isn't that right,,, RICK: Don't name it, MORTY: ,,,Morty Jr , RICK: Oh, crap, He named it,

In this conversation, Rick uses the word crap. The word crap means waste or excrement. When the word crap is used for swearing, the meaning of the word crap serves as something extremely bad or useless, just like waste or excrement. In

Rick’s utterances, the phrase Oh, crap is an expression of disappointment. The expression of the disappointment of Rick is caused when Rick forbids Morty to name the alien baby but instead of hearing Rick’s advice, Morty gives the alien name of Morty Junior. In this show, there is also another variety of the word crap that is used in Rick’s conversation.

A9 (Episode 2, 00:14:05-00:14:17) MORTY: Hey, leave him alone! RICK: Yeah, this is a bunch of bullcrap. Who cares what stupid pun you make when you kill someone? Why don't you let the poor guy say whatever he wants?

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

27

In this conversation, Rick uses the word bullcrap. Bullcrap is a variety of the word crap in terms of swear words. The word bullcrap is considered as vulgarity because the word refers to an animal exercement. When the word crap is turned into bullcrap, the meaning of the word also has changed a little. Bullcrap means nonsense or useless talk. Both the word crap and bullcrap still share the same meaning of something useless or bad.

Another example of the vulgar word is shit. The word shit has the same meaning as the word crap. Both words have the meaning of waste or excrement.

The aspect that differentiates the word crap and shit is the matter of offensiveness.

The word shit is considered more offensive than the word crap. Here are some examples of the use of the word shit in Rick’s utterances.

A41 (Episode 11, 00:11:18-00:11:39) MORTY: How are you guys not freaking out right now?! T-the whole house is sitting in another dimension! I-I mean, w-what the hell are we supposed to do?! M-m-mom and dad are gonna kill us! I'm losing it here, Rick! RICK: Relax, Morty, rela-a-a-ax! It's gonna be fine. All we have to do is go out and find us some kalaxian crystals. Oh, shit, motherfucker! Kalaxian crystals, Morty, just a few miles South of here.

The conversation above is talking about how Morty is panicking because his whole house is transported to another dimension. Morty worries if his parents will find out about what happened to the house. On the other hand, Rick tells Morty to calm down and relax. He got the solution to move back the house to its place if

Morty find him some kalaxian crystals. The expression of Rick uses the word shit in his utterances, express his shock when he finds out that there are kalaxian crystals few miles from there.

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

28

A13 (Episode 3, 00:21:30-00:21:43) ETHAN: So those guys are inside me, huh? Like, building a park? RICK: Those guys are inside you building a piece of shit, Ethan! They're inside you building a monument to compromise! Fuck 'em. Fuck those people. Fuck this whole thing, Ethan.

The conversation above is an example of how the word shit being modified into a phrase a piece of shit. When Rick uses the phrase a piece of shit in his utterances, the meaning of the phrase becomes something useless, or trash. That phrase is referring to the theme park that has been building inside Ethan’s body. In this episode, Rick has a project by making a microscopic theme park inside Ethan’s body. While building the theme park inside Ethan’s body, the builders do not build

Rick’s request about a ride name Pirate of the Pancreas. Because of that, Rick becomes furious and telling Ethan that the theme park inside his body is completely useless and trash.

Another vulgar word that Rick uses in this series is dipshit. Dipshit is a word from the combination of two words which is dip and shit. Although the word is the combination of the word dip and shit, the meaning of the word dipshit is not related to those two words. Based on the Meriam-Webster dictionary, dipshit means someone who is stupid or incompetent. Here is an example of how Rick uses the word dipshit in his conversation.

A35 (Episode 10, 00:21:34-00:22:18) RICK: Wubbalubbadubdub! Oh. Hey Jerry. Wh-wh-what are you doing in my room, buddy? JERRY: Nothing! I was just, um, checking the smoke detectors. RICK: Alright. Okay, get out. What’s that dipshit doing out there? Are you friends with him? You know he eats his own shit, right? Oh my god, this is rich! I’ve got like ten Ricks to call right now!

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

29

The context of the conversation is about Jerry, Rick’s son-in-law, who just lost his new friend which is a Rick Sanchez but comes from another dimension. In this episode, Rick is being hunt by the evil Rick, the another version of Rick

Sanchez. This episode tells there are a lot of version of Rick Sanchez from another dimension and one of them is the stupid version of Rick Sanchez. Jerry likes the other dimension Rick, which is stupid, other than the original Rick which is an annoying person. When Rick finds out that Jerry be-friends with the other dimension Rick, he mocks him by saying that the other dimension Rick a dipshit.

Rick is mocking the other dimension Rick by calling him a stupid and incompetent person.

A43 (Episode 11, 00:14:05-00:14:31) MORTY: Rick, wait! There's something you need to know. I couldn't have done it without Lincoler. He said that he was really sorry and that he loves you like a father. He only wanted you to accept him, and he hopes that his final act would redeem him in your eyes. He sacrificed himself to save all of us, Rick. He died. RICK: Well, at least he didn't die in vain. He got these crystals. And these babies just saved this lame-ass party! Wubba, lubba, dub, dub! Play something. Somebody, play something.

Ass is also a swear word that belongs to the vulgar type of word. Based on the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the word ass is the informal form of the buttock of the human being. When the word ass is used for swearing like the phrase lame- ass from Rick’s utterances, the use of the word is not literary based on the word meaning. The function of the word ass intensify the meaning of the word. The phrase lame-ass in Rick’s utterances means that something is really boring.

A38 (Episode 11, 00:04:14-00:04:20) BIRDPERSON: I am pleased there is no emergency.

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

30

RICK: Oh, there's an emergency, all right. A pussy emergency! When's the last time you got laid, 'pers?

From the conversation above, Rick uses the word pussy in his utterances.

The word pussy, based on Merriam-Webster dictionary, means the sexual organ of a woman. In the conversation between the Birdperson and Rick, Rick is having a party in his house and invited Birdperson by saying there is an emergency. The emergency that happens at the party is about the need of having sex. That is why

Rick says a pussy emergency to Birdperson because Rick wants Birdperson to have sex when he is at the party.

2. Obscenity

Obscenity words have pornographic senses that make people avoid talking about them in public. Obscenity is the most offensive word to use and not acceptable on any occasion. The most common word of obscenity is the word fuck.

Based on the Oxford dictionary, the word fuck means the offensive term of having sexual intercourse. Here are some examples of how Rick uses the word fuck in the conversation.

A25 (Episode 8, 00:17:01-00:17:07) RICK: Pretty cool, huh, Morty? Oh. JERRY: Uh, I thought it was cool. RICK: I don't give a fuck what you think, Jerry.

In this conversation, Rick actually asks Morty about the TV show that they watch together. But when Rick asks Morty, Morty already leaves him. Instead of getting a response from Morty, Rick gets a response from Jerry. Rick does not care about Jerry’s opinion about the TV show. The phrase I don’t give a fuck from Rick’s

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

31

utterance means that Rick does not care at all about Jerry’s opinion. The word fuck strongly expresses how Rick does not care about what Jerry thinks.

A21 (Episode 5, 00:11:14-00:11:30) MORTY: Oh, wow, Rick. Now, this is more like it. Look, there's little staircase-shaped people in here. All kinds of crazy characters. This place is great, you know? It's whimsical and fun. RICK: What are you looking at, motherfucker? MORTY: Easy, Rick.

Motherfucker is another variety of how the word fuck is used for swearing. the meaning of the word motherfucker, based on Merriam-Webster dictionary, is an offensive insult to describe a despicable or contemptible person or something. In the conversation above, Rick and Morty are visiting a tavern where they meet up with some mythical and whimsical creature. Because they are the only human in there, some of the creatures start to stare at them. Rick becomes uncomfortable with them and he insults them with the word motherfucker.

3. Profanity

Profanity is the type of swear words that use religious terminology for non- religious purposes. The profanity type of word could be used as an intensifier in the conversation. It means the use of profanity type of word is to strengthen the point of the speaker. This is one of the examples of how Rick Sanchez uses profanity in his utterance.

A11 (Episode 3, 00:04:55-00:05:06) RICK: Hey, Bloom, it's Rick. What the hell's going on here? DR XENON BLOOM: I don't know why, but the entire security system has shut down, and I'm afraid the exhibits are unlocked.

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

32

The context of the conversation is about Rick is trying to figure out what happens to a theme park named anatomy park that mysteriously going to shut down for some reason. Rick is asking Dr. Xenon Bloom, the person in charge of the park, about what happened to the anatomy park. Rick uses the word hell in his utterance when asking Dr. Xenon Bloom. Hell is a religious terminology just like the word heaven. To put it simply, hell is the place for bad people to go after death. The word hell is always described as a horrible place. By putting the word hell in Rick’s utterances, Rick is emphasizing the question and showing that he is being serious about knowing what bad things are happening there. Because of the use of religious terminology in Rick’s utterances, the word hell is considered as a profanity.

A12 (Episode 3, 00:18:24-00:18:30) RICK: Where's Dr. Bloom? MORTY: Sorry Rick... He's dead... RICK: Goddamn it, Morty, I ask you to do one thing!

The conversation above is another example of a profanity type of word. The word Goddamn is a combination between the word God and damn. Based on the oxford dictionary (2013), the word God means the supreme creator of the universe, while the word damn means to curse someone or be condemned by God’s punishment in hell. By combining those words into Goddamn, the word means to condemn someone to hell by God. The concept about the punishment from God for sending someone to hell could be found in religious teaching. Because of this fact, the word Goddam could be considered as one of the religious terminologies.

By seeing the context of the conversation, Rick is disappointed with Morty because Morty could keep Dr. Xenon Bloom alive. Rick uses the word Goddamn

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

33

to express his disappointing feeling to Morty. The use of the word Goddam in

Rick’s utterance has nothing to do with religious purposes. Rick uses the word

Goddamn just for the sake of expressing his feeling.

A39 (Episode 11, 00:06:16-00:06:26) MORTY: Yeah, if I relax now, there might not even be any more adventures! RICK: Jesus, Morty, you're bumming me out. Can't we just pretend like everything's fine for a few hours, enjoy ourselves, and then worry about all this later?

This is another example of how religious terminology is being used by Rick in his utterance. The story of this conversation is when Morty try to stop Rick from throwing the party when his parents are gone for a trip. Morty worries if his parents find out that they are throwing a party at their house, Morty will not be allowed to join Rick for another adventure. Rick feels annoyed by Morty being panic, because of that Rick tells Morty to relax and calm down.

The use of the word Jesus in Rick’s utterance is referring to Jesus Christ.

Jesus Christ is a God from Christianity. When Rick uses the word Jesus in his utterance, he does not mean any religious kind of thing. The use of the word Jesus in this context is to express annoyance or a sigh of disappointment.

4. Epithet

Epithet is the word that gives a description of someone or something in an offensive way. Epithet is a type of swear word that refers to race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, appearance, disability, or other characteristics that represent someone. In other words, the epithet is also known as name-calling. Usually, the name-calling

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

34

is in a rude or offensive manner. This is an example of how Rick uses epithet word type in his utterances.

A37 (Episode 11, 00:02:09-00:02:14) RICK: Uh, Summer, you can't have a party. SUMMER: Ugh. RICK: Because I'm having a party, b-I-I-I-itch!

As it is shown, Rick uses the word bitch in this conversation. Based on the

Oxford third edition (2013) dictionary, the word bitch could have more than one meaning. The first meaning is a female dog, wolf, or fox. The other is an informal term for a spiteful or unpleasant woman, thing, or situation. By seeing the context of the conversation, Summer wants to throw a party at her house while her parents are not home. Rick prevents Summer to thorw a party because he wants to throw a party at the first place. Rick uses swear words towards Summer, which is a female.

The use of the word bitch in this conversation means an unpleasant woman. This is another variation of the use of the word bitch.

A17 (Episode 4, 00:17:04-00:17:27) ZIGERION: Oh, my God, Rick. How dumb are you? You're inside a simulation of a simulation inside another giant simulation! W-We never had the recipe for concentrated dark matter. But we do now! We do now, sucka! RICK: You simulated my grandson's genitalia?! Y-Y-You bunch of diabolical sons of bitches!

The context of the story is about Rick Sanchez that being trick by Zigerion, which is a group of aliens, to get the recipe of concentrated dark matter from Rick by putting him into a simulation and try to brain wash his mind and make him talk about the recipe. After Rick finally knows that the Zigerion tricked him for spoiling the recipe of concentrated dark matter, Rick becomes furious. By seeing the context

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

35

of the utterances, the word bitches that Rick Sanchez uses is considered a description of an unpleasant or despicable woman. By turning the word bitch into a phrase like sons of bitches, Rick Sanchez means to insult the Zigerion and their friend by calling them sons of an unpleasant or despicable woman. In other words,

Rick calls their mother an unpleasant or despicable woman.

A22 (Episode 7, 00:02:33-00:00:02:59) Rick: Where's the sex robot, Morty? Morty: That is Gwendolyn -- I-I mean, the robot! She started beeping and then transformed and tried to fly away! Rick: Strange -- that's usually the man's job, you know what I'm talking about, Morty? Wubba-lubba-dub-dub! Morty that's my catchphrase, remember? Remember -- remember how I -- how I cemented that catchphrase? All right, All right, seriously, though, let me grab this thing, Come on, you,,,rascal,

Rascal is also a swear word that is considered an epithet. By seeing the meaning in Merriam-Webster dictionary, rascal means someone who is dishonest, mean, or mischievous yet annoying. In Rick’s utterances, he uses the word rascal to the sex robot who transforms and tried to fly away. He says rascal in his utterance to express how annoyed he is because he tries to catch the flying sex robot.

B. Purpose of Swearing

In this part, the researcher discusses the purpose of swearing from Rick

Sanchez in Rick and Morty season 1. The researcher finds there are four purposes of swearing in this series. Table 4 – Purpose of Swearing

Purpose of Swearing Purpose of Swearing Frequency Abusive Swearing 14 Cathartic Swearing 12 Idiomatic Swearing 8 Emphatical Swearing 8 Descriptive Swearing 1

Total 43

Based on the table above, the most frequent purpose of swearing is abusive swearing. Abusive swearing appears 14 times in Rick and Morty season 1.

Cathartically coming in second with 12 times appearances. In the third place, there is idiomatically and emphatically swearing with 8 times appearances. Descriptively come in last with 1 appearance. The reason why Rick uses abusive swearing frequently because in the story Rick described as an arrogant person. He claims himself as the most genius person in the universe. That is why Rick always despises other characters. To determine the purpose of each, swear word, the context of each swear word must be considered. The conversation between Rick Sanchez and other characters is provided to give a clear context about the conversation.

1. Abusive Swearing

Swearing could be used abusively. The main purpose of abusive swearing is to insult or discredit another person using swear words. The effect of abusive swearing is people tend to feel offended because their swear is intended to insult them personally. When people swear abusively, they are attempting to show

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

37

dominance over the person who receives the swearing. This conversation below is an example of abusive swearing in Rick’s utterances.

A12 (Episode 3, 00:18:24-00:18:30) RICK: Where’s Dr. Bloom? MORTY: Sorry Rick... He’s dead... RICK: Goddamn it, Morty, I ask you to do one thing!

In the conversation above, Rick is asking where Dr. Xenon Bloom is. Morty tells Rick that Dr. Xenon Bloom is killed by the virus swarm while they are trying to escape from the theme park called Anatomy Park. Because Dr. Xenon Bloom the only one who knows what happens to the park, Rick becomes upset with Morty because he could not save Dr. Xenon Bloom. Because of that, Rick says “Goddamn it, Morty”. This swearing is from Rick to insult Morty with the word Goddam. The meaning of Rick’s utterance is to hope Morty gets damn by God. Rick is showing dominance by intimidate Morty. Because the swearing is intended to insult Morty, this utterance is considered abusive swearing.

A21 (Episode 5, 00:11:14-00:11:30) Morty: Oh, wow, Rick. Now, this is more like it. Look, there’s little staircase-shaped people in here. All kinds of crazy characters. This place is great, you know? It’s whimsical and fun. Rick: What are you looking at, motherfucker? Morty: Easy, Rick.

The context of the conversation is about Rick and Morty are having an adventure to a fairy tale dimension. On their way home, Morty insists Rick visit a tavern. Rick who just wants to go home is forced to accompany Morty to the tavern.

When they are going inside the tavern, they are welcomed by the mythical and whimsical creatures. Because they are the only human in the tavern, all the creatures

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

38

staring at them. Rick finds this condition does not make him happy. He becomes furious and insults one of the creatures. He swears “What are you looking at, motherfucker?”. By saying the word motherfucker, Rick insults everyone who is staring at him. Rick insults to show dominance to the creature and provoke them.

Rick’s son in law, Jerry, befriends another version of Rick that come from another dimension. In Rick and Morty series, Rick has an alternate version of himself from an alternate reality. Jerry likes this other dimension Rick from an alternate reality, which is stupid and goofy, other than the original Rick which is an annoying person. When Rick finds out about Jerry just lost his friend, he says that

Rick from the other dimension is a dipshit. Rick is insulting the other version Rick using the swear word dipshit instead of using the less offensive word like stupid or else. By using swear words instead of regular words for insulting, it could be meant that Rick has strongly hated that other dimension Rick.

A17 (Episode 4, 00:17:04-00:17:27) ZIGERION SCAMMER: Oh, my God, Rick. How dumb are you? You’re inside a simulation of a simulation inside another giant simulation! W-We never had the recipe for concentrated dark matter. But we do now! We do now, sucka! RICK: You simulated my grandson’s genitalia?! Y-Y-You bunch of diabolical sons of bitches!

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

39

In the conversation above, Rick shows anger to the Zigerion by insulting them with the phrase son of bitches. Rick is furious because the Zigerion trick Rick to get the recipe of concentrated dark matter. The Zigerion put Rick into a simulation of real life. The Zigerion finally could make Rick spoil out the recipe of concentrated dark matter. When Rick realizes that he has been tricked by the

Zigerion, he becomes angry and mad with them. To release his anger to the

Zigerion, he swears and insults them with the phrase son of bitches.

2. Cathartic Swearing

The use of swear words for expressing emotion and feeling purpose is called cathartically. When people swear cathartically, they express a certain emotion or feeling with swear words. Some people choose to swear because some word does not represent enough to express what they feel. In this case, swear words become more representable to describe a particular emotion. Here are some examples how

Rick swears cathartically in Rick and Morty season 1.

A39 (Episode 11, 00:06:16-00:06:26) MORTY: Yeah, if I relax now, there might not even be any more adventures! RICK: Jesus, Morty, you’re bumming me out. Can’t we just pretend like everything’s fine for a few hours, enjoy ourselves, and then worry about all this later?

In the conversation above Rick is having a conversation with Morty. Morty is worried about the party in his house because he is afraid of his parents to find out that there is a party in their house. Before his parents leave the house, they make

Morty promise to not throw a party, or else Morty will be prohibited from going

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

40

on another adventure with Rick. Morty is begging rick to stop the party. Because

Morty keeps disturbing Rick, Rick swears “Jesus, Morty, you’re bumming me out”.

In Rick’s utterance, he uses the swear word Jesus to show his expression of annoyance to Morty. In this conversation, Rick chooses to swear instead of using another word to express his feeling to Morty. This utterance is considered cathartically swearing.

A8 (Episode 2, 00:09:21-00:10:01) MORTY: Oh, geez, Rick. W-w-whoa, this isn’t good. SCARY TERRY: Nothing but fear from here on out, bitch! MORTY: Ohhhh! RICK: Holy crap, Morty. He can travel through dreams. He can travel through dreams! We’re so screwed!

The context of the conversation is about Rick and Morty entering Morty’s math teacher so they can convince him to give Morty an A in his math. They do not know there is a dream monster named Scary Terry that terrorizes them inside the dream. When Rick finds out that Scary Terry could travel through a dream and can easily haunt them Rick becomes so shocked with it. The expression of shock from

Rick is described by the swearing “Holly crap”.

A22 (Episode 7, 00:03:35-00:03:44) MORTY: I lost the chance to be careful, Rick, I’m a father now! You know, it’s time for me to be responsible, Isn’t that right,,, RICK: Don’t name it, MORTY: ,,,Morty Jr , RICK: Oh, crap, He named it,

The conversation is also considered as cathartically. Although Rick uses the same swear word to express his expression, this Rick’s swearing is expressing the feeling of disappointment instead of shock. The context of the conversation is Rick

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

41

is preventing Morty from giving the baby alien a name. Instead of listening to

Rick’s advice, Morty gives the baby alien name. The act of disobedience of Morty makes Rick disappointed with him. The swearing “Oh, crap” represents Rick’s feeling of disappointment. From seeing the two Rick’s utterances before, although the swear word is the same, it could express various kinds of feelings and emotions.

3. Idiomatic Swearing

When people swear idiomatically, their purpose is not to insult or abuse other people by using the swear word. These swearing uses swear word not literary but represent something else by using it as an idiom. This conversation below is some of the examples how swear is used idiomatically.

A9 (Episode 2, 00:14:05-00:14:17) MORTY: Hey, leave him alone! RICK: Yeah, this is a bunch of bullcrap. Who cares what stupid pun you make when you kill someone? Why don’t you let the poor guy say whatever he wants?

The conversation above is talking about Rick and Morty who try to help out

Scary Terry from being bullied by the teacher. The teacher bullies Scary Terry because he cannot answer the teacher’s question. In this conversation, Rick uses the word bullcrap. Bullcrap means nonsense or useless talk. Instead of using saying

“Yeah, this is a bunch of nonsense.” Rick says “Yeah, this is a bunch of bullcrap”.

The choice of word that Rick uses is changing a normal word into a swear word.

The purpose of changing the world is not for insulting another person but it tends to be idiomatic.

A25

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

42

(Episode 8, 00:17:01-00:17:07) RICK: Pretty cool, huh, Morty? Oh. JERRY: Uh, I thought it was cool. RICK: I don’t give a fuck what you think, Jerry.

The conversation above has the same as the conversation before. In the conversation, Rick is asking Morty’s opinion while Morty is already leaving the room. Instead of getting Morty’s opinion, Jerry answers Rick’s question by giving his opinion. Rick who does not want Jerry’s opinion says, “I don’t give a fuck what you think Jerry.”. The phrase “I don’t give a fuck” has the same meaning as ”I don’t care”. Rick once again changes a normal word into a swear word. Rick uses swear words as an idiom for expressing himself instead of using a normal word.

A13 (Episode 3, 00:21:30-00:21:43) ETHAN: So those guys are inside me, huh? Like, building a park? RICK: Those guys are inside you building a piece of shit, Ethan! They’re inside you building a monument to compromise! Fuck ‘em. Fuck those people. Fuck this whole thing, Ethan.

In this part of the conversation, Rick uses another swear word as an idiom.

When Rick says “…building a piece of shit” it does not literary building a shit, which means waste or excrement. What Rick really means in his utterances is that some guys that Rick tells to build something are building something useless or valueless. This is caused by the builders who refuse to build an attraction name

Pirate of the Pancreas. Rick has something personal bonding with the attraction and building the attraction is an obligation in Anatomy Park.

4. Emphatic Swearing

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

43

Emphatically is the swearing that can also be in a form of adjective or adverb and an intensifier in a conversation. In this case, the swear words are not used to insult people or as a reaction to a specific situation. People usually use swear words as an adjective or adverb in their conversation. In other words, the purpose of this swearing is to emphasize something or as an intensifier when they deliver a message. Here are some examples of emphatically swearing that are found in Rick and Morty season 1.

A11 (Episode 3, 00:04:55-00:05:06) RICK: Hey, Bloom, it’s Rick. What the hell’s going on here? DR XENON BLOOM: I don’t know why, but the entire security system has shut down, and I’m afraid the exhibits are unlocked.

The conversation above is about Rick who is trying to figure out what happens to a theme park named anatomy park. Rick is asking Dr. Xenon Bloom about what happens to the anatomy park. When Rick asks Dr. Xenon Bloom, he added the swear word hell in his utterances. This swear word function is as an auxiliary in the sentence. The word hell Rick’s utterance gives a different tone. An utterance that uses a swear word has a different sense to the hearer. In his utterances,

Rick gives a serious tone to Dr. Xenon Bloom about wanting to know what really happens to the park. That is why this utterance is considered as emphatically.

A20 (Episode 5, 00:09:02-00:09:25) GIANT LAWYER: Fee! Fi! Fo! Fum! I smell the violation of civil liberties! Your honor, I’m from a tiny-persons advocacy group and I have here in my hand a motion to dismiss. These little men were never read their giant rights and are therefore free-fi to fo-home. RICK: W-what the hell is he talking about? GIANT LAWYER: They’re free to go, is what I meant. I’m deconstructing our our our thing we say. We’re giants. Nobody got that? Whatever.

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

44

Based on the conversation above, Rick and Morty are facing trial for accidentally killing an innocent giant. When the judge wants to give them a punishment, a giant lawyer suddenly comes to defend Rick and Morty. Rick does not understand what the giant lawyer is talking about. Because of that, Rick swears

“W-what the hell is he talking about?”. The word hell in Rick’s utterance is an intensifier. The presence of the swear word in Rick’s utterance is giving a strong sense and tone to his utterance.

A43 (Episode 11, 00:14:05-00:14:31) MORTY: Rick, wait! There’s something you need to know. I couldn’t have done it without Lincoler. He said that he was really sorry and that he loves you like a father. He only wanted you to accept him, and he hopes that his final act would redeem him in your eyes. He sacrificed himself to save all of us, Rick. He died. RICK: Well, at least he didn’t die in vain. He got these crystals. And these babies just saved this lame-ass party! Wubba, lubba, dub, dub! Play something. Somebody, play something.

In this conversation, Rick is lying to Morty about getting Kalaxain crystal.

Rick says that those crystals could save them and bring back their house into their own dimension. Morty believes Rick and searches for the crystal with Lincoler and in their way, Lincoler gets killed by a beast. The truth is that crystal is just a kind of drug that Rick uses to enliven the party. When Rick uses the word ass in the phrase lame-ass, the word ass becomes an intensifier. It makes the phrase lame-ass means really boring.

5. Descriptive Swearing

Descriptive swearing is when people tend to use dysphemistic word or term instead of the neutral one. People tend to use rude or offensive terms instead of

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

45

neutral because sometimes different dictions could give a different interpertation.

When people use offensive or rude word in their conversation, the speaker shows a different tone and emotion to the conversation. Here is the example of how Rick swears descriptively.

A36 (Episode 10, 00:21:34-00:22:18) RICK: Wubbalubbadubdub! Oh.

In the conversation above, Rick is having a conversation with Jerry. Rick is mocking Jerry for be-friends a Rick but from another dimension and alternate reality. Jerry likes this other version of Rick from an alternate reality, but Rick explains that the other dimension Rick is stupid. Rick tells Jerry that the other dimension Rick is literary eating his own feces. In Rick’s utterance Rick use the word shit to describe human feces. Rick uses the offensive term instead of the neutral one to show how he disgusts with the stupid Rick from the other dimension.

CHAPTER V

CONCLUSION

A swear word is a word that has a negative and rude manner when it is used in a daily conversation. Swearing is one of the language phenomena that use violent language to express a variety of expressions and feelings of the speaker in their expression. Today, the practices of swearing are part of human communication in their society. The use of swear words in daily communication is one of the ways people express themselves. Based on the objective of the study, the researcher finds the type and purpose of the swearing-in Rick Sanchez’s utterances in Rick and Morty season 1.

To answer the first research question, the researcher found four types of swear words that are used by Rick Sanchez in Rick and Morty season 1. Those types are epithet, profanity, vulgarity, and obscenity. Vulgarity is the most frequent type that was used by Rick Sanchez in Rick and Morty season 1, followed by obscenity, profanity, and the last is an epithet. Vulgarity appears 17 times followed by

Obscenity 11 times. Profanity is in third place with 8 appearances and the last type is epithet with 7 times appearances in Rick and Morty season 1.

46

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

47

Rick Sanchez followed by cathartical swearing, idiomatic swearing, emphatical swearing, and descriptive swearing. Abusive swearing appears 14 times followed by cathartically with 11 times of appearances. In the third place, there is idiomatically and emphatically swearing with 8 times appearances. In the last place, there are descriptively with 1 appearance in the show.

Not only giving another insight about swear words, but this study also gives some suggestion for other researchers who wants to conduct research about swear words and swearing as a phenomenon. It is possible for the next study to analyze the history of swear words to know the root and origin of swear word. It is also possible to conduct a same study but with different approach. By using a different approach, the understanding of swear words could be boarder.
