‘Other’ MORTLOCKs

Here follow a few pages of MORTLOCKs of whose earlier roots I continue uncertain. Yes, there do probably exist records around the country that could perhaps elucidate these trees, even the descents from Johns, Jameses or Williams. But sometimes even the trick of kicking a family back to the widowed mother’s county of origin doesn’t seem to work.

Some of the entries which follow come from the Probate Register and show where people finish up rather than where they started from. They are repeated from the will lists which follow as a later chapter.

Many of the backward references under non-East Anglian counties are for women who married MORTLOCKs, often MORTLOCKs living in Greater London. I suspect that several of these were country girls who came up to London to go into service, but mostly I have no evidence at that level of detail.

A classic case of mobility is provided by the gamekeeper father and son, William and John, born respectively in Cambridgeshire of a father born in Eriswell, Suffolk, and Mildenhall. They and their spouses and children left vital records successively in Shropshire, Nottinghamshire, in the Highlands of Scotland, Leicestershire, Derbyshire, back in Nottinghamshire and then probably in Staffordshire and Yorkshire, and finally Warwickshire. John was killed in action in , fighting alongside Australians, having been called up at 33 with a wife and three children (see Lakenheath(5), Suffolk).

By the end of these pages it can be seen that the general diaspora of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, marvellously facilitated by improved physical and intellectual communications, is beginning to bite even on the MORTLOCKs. They have reached Northumberland, Cumbria and ultimately Cornwall, South Wales and Scotland; there are several separate branches in Canada, the , South Africa, Australia and New Zealand; there are MORTLOCK records in Jamaica and in the Argentine, and two ‘Cambridge’ MORTLOCK ladies died in France. However it will also be noted that, while most of this emigration took place after, say, 1850, there are some interesting ventures abroad of much earlier date. One of the earliest, noted in the section One of Cromwell’s Captains, records a seventeenth century MORTLOCK emigrant to Jamaica. Although I have tried to list referrals for foreign countries, it should be noticed that nearly all the major MORTLOCK groups contributed emigrants to Australia and to the United States.

Some events are recorded for countries overseas where no birth data is available, although the persons concerned were almost certainly English. This includes ‘arrivals’ data at various ports.

NB American records for ‘MORELOCK’ refer to descendants of German ‘MOHRLOCK’s. Somehow true MORTLOCKs hang on to their dental consonant through thick and thin. However a possible example in England of a MORTLOCK starting off as MOHRLOCK is shown under Germany.

The MEDLOCKs of Bedfordshire and Huntingdonshire may be related; this form seems to be local to those counties. However I have not extended this analysis in their direction.

William MORTLOCK, a linen draper and chapman of Rochester, was made bankrupt on 29.12.1829. William proved a slippery fish to catch, dodging about between London and Gravesend to avoid any of his many creditors having him imprisoned (indeed he is probably the William who was imprisoned, presumably briefly, 26.7.1828); the proceedings dragged on into some sort of settlement in March 1836. Unfortunately the records of this complex transaction yield no hint of his age or origins. [TNA,B3/3585 & LG 1.3.36] Maybe his son is:

NB please note that this section is currently a work in progress. It is hoped that it can be improved when Ancestry.com is able to make available the records it bought from the defunct Ancestry24.co.za. South African genealogy research is hampered by the historic destruction of all original census records.

Gravestone inscriptions are taken from www.eggsa.org; several modern lines have been backward chained from the ZA telephone book, Facebook and LinkedIn etc. Birth dates are approximate, calculated from Facebook.

Allegedly approx 1664 South Africans have MORTLOCK as their surname!

James MORTLOCK (1760-1801), the illegitimate son of Mary MORTLOCK of Kirtling, Cambs, & Patrick MURRAY, 5th Lord ELIBANK, at the time a privateer, was based in the Cape intermittently from 1796 to 1806. He MAY be the original progenitor of some of the Cape MORTLOCKs now visible on Facebook; so also may Charles who seems to have emigrated to ZA ca.1850 (see Unassigned). Also, a number of MORTLOCKs serve in the Zulu and Boer Wars.

------| | | | | | s s s s s ?Yusuf of Belhar, W.Cape | Nawahl(f)1980 PhD = RAZAK physics lecturer;10k runner 2011;biker

In July 2018 a BBC programme 'Who Do You Think You Are' showed Shirley Ballas exploring her ZA 'Malay' ancestry. Her forebear Caroline Otto was a Cape 'Malay'. These, apparently, were people brought to the Cape as slaves from 'Malagas', or Madagascar and currently the Malagasy Republic. Many came from Indonesia (which may explain 'Malagas' as a corruption or version of 'Malay') and were Muslim. They had a specific quarter in Capetown. It was stated that the surnames they adopted or were given could be those of their owners.

‘Other’ MORTLOCKs 44 RJHG 05.05.2019 Adoption of the MORTLOCK surname in USA & Canada ------There are several cases in the US censuses of people listed as MO/ARTLO/ACK where the family is not English by origin. Some are mistranscriptions (understandable when one looks at the manuscript original, which may itself be corrupt because of lack of understanding or patience in the original census taker) but in others there seems to have been direct adoption of the name by a European immigrant. This may be due to the official handling the original immigration, he being unable or unwilling to comprehend the accent or to countenance the correct foreign spelling. Some, who can be seen from the census not to be English in origin, turned into MORTLOCKs when they signed on for a Social Security number (vide Dolores Martlock below) or, like two offspring of Leo Martlock were recorded as MORTLOCK at the time of death; both these families are German in origin. The current internet genealogical analysis of MORELOCK/MOHRLOCK blurs this distinction. Some have come to the US from Canada, and are listed as born ‘Canada/English’ but the father is listed as born in Germany etc. Sometimes a deliberate change to an ‘English’ surname was made to obscure Jewish origins and avoid anti-Semitism - there are plenty enough of these instances of Anglicisation in England itself, some of their descendants now holding high office.

One can only marvel at how the United States managed to make a nation out of this heterogeneous input so rapidly that it was able to send these people into battle together in 1917 and 1942, often against the very people they had come (or maybe fled) from.

However in the cases of Germany itself, and Argentina, below, I have broken my ‘rule’ and do give details of two ‘adoptions’.

^ Lionel Leasowe, although born and brought up in Argentina, was educated at Bishop’s Stortford College, Herts. He is recorded as leaving Liverpool for Buenos Aires in 1907. He came ‘home’ from South America to join up and was commissioned into 3 R.Lancs (King’s Own) as a 2nd Lt 6.5.1915. On 1st July 1916 he led his men ‘over the top’ into the Battle of the Somme, between Serre and Beaumont Hamel. Almost immediately machine gun bullets tore into his legs. His right femur was broken and in August the leg was amputated. There was a further amputation in January 1917 so that an artificial limb could be fitted. In the same incident the left fibula was broken, and never healed, remaining septic for a long time; the two ends of the broken bone never united. Lionel was left in considerable pain for the rest of his short life. He had been so proud to wear his King’s uniform; by Lionel’s special request he was allowed to continue wearing it when retired, on appropriate occasions [TNA,WO339/63175]. Awarded silver war badge.
