In the early 19th century, a major emphasis in higher education was on the study of Greek and Latin, with little attention to modern or contemporary subjects. The founders of New York University intended to enlarge the scope of higher education to meet the needs of persons aspiring to careers in business, industry, science, and the arts, as well as law, medicine, and the ministry. The opening of the University of London in 1828 convinced New Yorkers that their city, too, should have a university. The first president of New York University’s governing council, Albert Gallatin, and his co-founders said that the new university was to be a “national university” that would provide a “rational and practical education for all.” The result of the founders’ foresight is today an institution of higher education at the forefront of America’s urban research universities. Of the more than 3,000 colleges and universities in America, New York University is one of the 58 private institutions that are members of the distinguished Association of American Universities. Among its stellar – and accessible – faculty are recipients of the Nobel, Abel, and Pulitzer Prizes; the MacArthur, Guggenheim, and Fulbright Fellowships; and the Academy and Emmy Awards. The University includes 14 schools, colleges, and divisions at six major centers in Manhattan. In addition, the University operates branch campus programs in Westchester County at Manhattanville College and in Rockland County at Dominican College. Students come to the University from all 50 states and 150 foreign countries, and when they arrive at NYU they find a remarkable “campus of the city.” Twenty-six residence halls offer a warm and friendly home-away-from-home. In addition to encountering outstanding faculty in the classroom and an extraordinary range of academic resources, newcomers find themselves in a dynamic setting for study and learning. If the FDR Drive is backed up, he knows to go down First Avenue. We’re going to play like that: go fast and explore possibilities.” This attacking philosophy will stretch across the pitch, from the forwards to the backline, when the Violets (6-10-1, 0-7-1 University Athletic Association-UAA) open their season Aug. 31 at the Skidmore Classic. Up front, Dasbach is looking for players who are “going to be bold and attack-minded and take chances. That’s what we expect.” very well see action in the midfield. Simon’s veteran presence will solidify the backline. Twomey will serve as a co- captain and could also slide in at defensive midfield, while Stutz has earned Dasbach’s praise for her leadership qualities. Sophomore Samantha Nick will also vie for time here, as will Gaston. “We minimize the word defending,” Dasbach said. “We attack the ball.” Between the pipes, senior co-captain Katie Barnes (1.55 GAA, 4 shutouts) returns for her third season as the starting goalkeeper. Her leadership and athletic play along the backline should make opposing scoring chances difficult to capitalize upon. Junior netminder Rebekah Kramer has stated a strong case for playing time after enjoying a solid preseason. Freshman Alexandra Walters, meanwhile, was dubbed “a very pleasant surprise” by Dasbach and will give the Violets another skilled reserve. 2002 UAA CHAMPIONS, NCAA DIVISION III SWEET 16 15 If the development of talented youngsters during the 2006 season was any indication, the foundation for future prosperity is in place for the New York University women’s soccer program. Of the starting 11 that the Violets (6-10-1, 0-7 University Athletic Association) often put on the pitch, there were usually four freshmen and four sophomores. As the 2006 campaign progressed, the younger players began displaying veteran savvy, as evidenced during a 1-0 victory over NCAA Division III Tournament participant Montclair State University on Oct. 22. It took only one goal to decide that match, which sophomore Sarah Pillemer (5 goals, 3 assists, 12 points) delivered in the 10th minute. From there, a stout defensive effort spearheaded by freshmen Lola Coker, Nicole Stutz and Erin Twomey helped keep Montclair State off the scoreboard. Lola Coker This group of youngsters helped NYU surge to a 5-0-1 start. During that span, the Violets won the Manhattanville College Valiant Cup Championship and outscored opponents 15-2 mainly because of the offensive skills of Pillemer, as well as freshmen Lucy Dolly Caires (2-3-7) and Sarah Lensing (3-2-8). In addition, the defensive tenacity of junior goalkeeper Katie Barnes (6-8-1, 1.55 GAA, 4 shutouts), Buckley, Stutz, and Twomey helped the Violets notch shutouts in each of those victories. With the 2006 season mainly serving as a stage for growth and development, the Violets offered glimpses of a program that should be ready to contend for a postseason invitation in 2007. In their second-to-last contest at UAA Champion and then-#7 ranked Washington University on Oct. 29, NYU battled the Bears into a second overtime before dropping a 1-0 decision. Sophomore Rebekah Kramer made her first collegiate start between the Nicole pipes memorable with an eight-save performance, including two Stutz acrobatic stops during regulation to sustain the Violets’ upset
