New osteostracans (Agnatha, Osteostraci) Zenaspis dzieduszyckii sp. nov. and Wladysagitta janvieri gen. et sp. nov., as well as new form of Diademaspis are described from the Lower Devonian of Podolia (Ukraine). Among them Zenaspis dzieduszyckii sp. nov. differs from all other representatives of the genus by its smaller overall size and relatively larger or− bits. Wladysagitta janvieri is remarkable by having a rostral process. This new species together with “Cephalaspis” acutirostris Stensiö, 1932 from Old Red deposits of Shropshire (Great Britain) are proposed to be united under common generic name Wladysagitta. Since Diademaspis sp. is completely unknown in outline of its shield, it could not be named as new species, although it should be a really new form. New diagnostic features, such as relative width of the orbits, rela− tive width of the dorsal field, and the position of the posterior end of the lateral fields relatively to the margins of the headshield, are proposed to differentiate genera within the Zenaspididae. Probably, the rostral process of osteostracans should be considered as a multifunctional device having at least a sensory function for food−search, possibly hydrody− namic functions, or may play a role in scaring predators. He also specifies the types of documents related to Jewish issues authenticated in these books (e.g. manifestations and lawsuits, declarations of the Radom Tribunal), as well as current source publications and internet databases containing selected documents from Ukrainian archives. The Central State Historical Archive in Lviv (CDIAL) (known as the Bernadine Ar- chive) and the Central State Historical Archive in Kyiv (CDIAUK) both have exten- sive collections of records of the so-called castle courts (sądy grodzkie), also known as local Starost courts (sądy starościńskie) for the nobility: from the Bełz and Ruthe- nian Voivodeships in the Lviv archive; and from the Łuck, Podolia, Kyiv, and Bracław Voivodeships in the Kyiv archive. This is particularly important because – in the light of Jewish population counts taken in 1764–1765 for the purpose of poll tax assessment – these areas were highly populated by Jews.

He was born and raised in a shtetl, Novokonstantinov, in the guber- nia (province) of Podolia, in Ukraine, Russia. My father pronounced it Neye-constanteen, and referred to it as Constantine. The townspeople called themselves Constantines. The town was on the river, the South- ern Buh (pronounced “bug”), and, until the Nazis built the European highway and bridge that bypassed the town, the ford in the river at Novokonstantinov was a vital east-west passageway for ordinary travel, commerce, and the military over the years. Although these groups are generally considered to be related to on e another, Lankester belie­ ved that "the Heterostraci are at present associated with the Osteostraci because they are found in the same beds, because they have, like Cepha­ laspis, a large head shield, and because there is nothing else with which to associate them". In 1889, Cop e united these two groups in the Ostracodermi which, together with the modern cyclostomes, he placed in the Class Agnatha, and although this proposal was at first opposed by Traquair (1899) and Woodward (1891b), subsequent work has shown that it was correct as both the Osteostraci and the Heterostraci were agnathous.

Not only are Ukrainian dialects more mutually divergent than those of Polish or of territorially more widespread Russian,2 but on the literary level the language has long been characterized by the existence of two variants of the standard which have never been perfectly harmonized, in spite of the efforts of nationalist writers for a century and a half. While Ukraine’s modern standard language is based on the eastern dialect of the Kyiv-Poltava-Kharkiv triangle, the literary Ukrainian cultivated by most of the diaspora communities continues to follow to a greater or lesser degree the norms of the Lviv koiné in 1 The authors would like to thank Dr Lance Eccles of Macquarie University for technical assistance in producing this paper. 2 De Bray (1969: 30-35) identifies three main groups of Russian dialects, but the differences are the result of internal evolutionary divergence rather than of external influences. The popular perception is that Russian has minimal dialectal variation compared with other major European languages. Maximilian Fourman (1943: viii), for instance, told students of Russian that the language ‘is amazingly uniform; the same language is spoken over the vast extent of the globe where the flag of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics flies; and you will be understood whether you are speaking to a peasant or a university professor. There are no dialects to bother you, although, of course, there are parts of the Soviet Union where Russian may be spoken rather differently, as, for instance, English is spoken differently by a Londoner, a Scot, a Welshman, an Irishman, or natives of Yorkshire or Cornwall.
