VISITORS WELCOME! Membership per year: $30.00 - Entitles 2 family members in the same household to all privileges of the Society (September 1 - August 31). Each member is entitled to one free classified ad per month. Non-members may place a classified ad of up to 30 words for $5.00 per issue. Business advertisement $40/month or $100/three months. Library books are due at the next meeting after they are checked out, after which the borrower's name may appear in the Dig & Pick. Fines will be assessed for overdue books. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions pertaining to advertising for the Spring show, call our resident expert Bill Borgwardt at 780-973-6655. 2 Wild Rose Antique Collectors General Meeting Monday, October 22, 2018 President, Clinton Beck called the meeting to order at 7:30 PM Two members present had not received the Dig & Pick. Brenda Thain moved the adoption of the September 24, 2018 General Meeting Minutes; seconded by Bernie Haber. Motion carried. Correspondence: No correspondence received this month. Reports: Treasurer: Tom Fritz reported the audit has not happened due to vacations but, will have a report for the next meeting. Show Director: Bernie Haber reported that 59 vendor applications have been received for the 2019 Show. He says that the new Edmonton Economic Development group isn’t using Ticketmaster anymore. We will have to deal with Showpass re ticket sales. Bernie also encouraged members to pick up Show Posters for distribution. Social/Program Director: Charles Daniel reported that Show & Tell for the November meeting will be collectibles starting with the letter Z. Christmas Party: Charles contacted the President of the Delwood Community League re our using the short hallway South of the kitchen to get guests from the main hallway into the hall without going through the kitchen during the party. He was told that unlocked offices are along that hallway, so we can not use it. The general consensus is that we can work around this as the construction of the main entrance continues. Membership Director: John Horrigan is on vacation. New Business: Christmas Party Friday, December 7th Tickets are available for purchase tonight from Nancy Ross. $20 for Members, $25 for Non-members. Clinton explained that the price increase was deemed necessary as the cost of catering has increased yearly while our ticket price has stayed at $15 for years. Last year the club paid $23.00 per dinner. Attendance tonight: 48 Guests: 5 Door Prizes: Yukon china plate won by Bessie Hogan. Raffle Prize: Basket of 4 “Y” items won by Marilyn Ulrickson. The medallion was designed by medalist, Edward Carter. His winning design includes an image of Britannia holding a trident and standing with a lion. In her outstretched left-hand Britannia holds an olive wreath above the rectangular tablet bearing the deceased’s name cast in raised letters. Below the name tablet, to the right of the lion, is an oak spray with acorns. The name does not include a rank since there was to be no distinction between sacrifices made by different individuals. Two dolphins swim around Britannia, symbolizing Britain’s sea power, and at the bottom a second lion is tearing apart the German eagle. The reverse is blank, making it a plaquette rather than a table medal. Around the picture the legend reads (in capitals) “He died for freedom and honour” or for Cecil Duke of Banff, Alberta enlisted in WW1 in nd the six hundred plaques issued to commemorate 1915. Fun facts about the Grey Cup: The Grey Cup trophy was commissioned in 1909 at a cost of $48 by Albert Grey, Canada’s Governor General, who originally hoped to donate it for Canada’s Senior Amateur Hockey Championship. After the Allan Cup was donated for that purpose, Grey instead made his trophy available as the National Championship of Canada Football. The Grey Cup has been broken on four occasions: in 1978 when it was dropped by the celebrating Edmonton Eskimo players, in 1987 when an Eskimo player sat on it, in 1993 when Edmonton’s Blake Dermott head- butted it, and finally in 2006 when the trophy broke away from its base as the B.C. Lions celebrated their victory. It has been stolen twice: disappeared for 3 days in 1967 when it was taken from the Hamilton Tiger Cats as a prank and in December 1969 it was stolen from the offices of the Ottawa Roughriders at Landsdowne Park. The thieves attempted to ransom the trophy but, the CFL refused to pay and made plans to replace it.
