Water Supply 31 Infrastructure for Connectivity Uzhamalackal Grama Panchayat in Thiruvananthapuram district has com- pleted the concreting of the 145 metre Paruthykuzhi-Koopil Ela road. The road concreting work has been completed utilis- ing the Performance Grant share of KLGSDP. The total cost of the project is Rs 4,00,000. The road starts from Paruthykuzhi junction and ends at Koopil Ela. The road remained muddy earlier and the citizens found it difficult to use during rainy season. Around 125 families benefit- ted directly from the project. The road was constructed with side protection wall and a natural drainage was maintained. The outcome of the project was easy ac- cess to road, easy access to service centre and transport facilities, increased employ- ment opportunities and economic status of women. The easier access to school even reduced the dropping out of girl children from schools. Kulakkada Grama Panchayat in Kollam district has construct- ed a bridge across the rivulet Erappan- thode. It is a concrete slab culvert measur- ing 3.5 ft. width and 5 m length. The bridge helps small vehicles cross the river. The total project cost is Rs 9,00,000. Kerala Local Government Service Delivery Project 5 The Tanur Grama Panchayat of Malappur- am district has completed the construction of the 150metre Tanur-Tirur bypass road. The landmark project, implemented during 2012- 13, is funded entirely by Performance Grant share of KLGSDP. The total cost of the project is Rs 31,00,000. The road starts from Tanur bus stand and ends at Tanur-Tirur road. Apart from increas- ing road connectivity, the project aims at re- ducing traffic congestion and overcrowding caused by the ever increasing traffic. It en- sures saving of half a kilometre distance when compared to the direct road access from Ta- nur main junction to Tanur Bus stand. Most of them were functioning in rented, di- lapidated structures often causing threat to the security of children and staff. The new buildings have the following facilities: baby-friendly toilet, drinking water facility, proper ventilation, good class room, hygienic kitchen and store room, and compound wall with gate. The Anganwadis have been functioning in the Grama Panchayats as part of the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) of the Government of India. The Anganwadis are centres providing multiple facilities to children and mothers. With the changing times, they are expanding the hori- zon of services by offering services to teenagers as well. In many places, the functioning of the An- ganwadis is however hit by poor infrastructure. The Pangode Grama Panchayat in Thiruva- Kerala Local Government Service Delivery Project 7 The activities taken up as part of the construction of the new buildings are: building construction, plastering, painting, flooring, tiles work, colourful painting, and electrical fitting. Each Anganwadi is estimated to benefit on an average 500 families especially women and children. The following Anganwadis are renovated: 1. Kadumankuzhi The new concrete building has an area of 42m2. The Project cost is Rs 8, 24,893. 2. Kanchinada The new concrete building has an area of 35m2. The Project cost is Rs 6, 89,310. 3. Kulamamkuzhi The new concrete building has an area of 42m2. The Project cost is Rs 8, 04,258. 4. Maranadu The new concrete building has an area of 37m2. The Project cost is Rs 7, 50,000. 5. Pulippara The new concrete building has an area of 42m2. The Project cost is Rs 8, 92,766. 8 KLGSDP – Documenting Success Stories All classrooms were laid with tiles. The Anganwadi had clean kitchen with store room and small util- ity room. The work on the compound wall for the Anganwadi was progressing. The total area of the building was 35.5 sq. metres. Twenty-five children were attending the An- ganwadi. All the children had proper uniform. Before completion of the present building construction, the Anganwadi used to function in a rented, old shed with inadequate facilities. Poovachal Grama Panchayat of Thiruvanan- thapuram district utilised the Performance Grant to carry out the construction of Anganwadi build- ing in Kuzhiyamkonam near Pezhumoodu. The Anganwadi was completed with Performance Grant share, 13th Finance Commission share and Own fund of the Panchayat. The total cost of the project was Rs 6, 60,000; of which the share of Per- formance Grant was 5, 09,653. The construction ensured necessary facilities for children who spend the day in the Anganwa- di. The construction ensured drinking water facil- ities, baby-friendly toilet and proper ventilation. The Vellarada Grama Panchayat in Thiruvananthapuram district con- structed Vazhiyambalam, wayside resting hub-cum-recreation place at Kovilloor (9 sq.m.). The floor was tiled and stone bench was covered by granite. The yard was finished with interlocking work. The building was provided with tube lights and fan. Decorative compound wall was con- structed around the structure. The total project cost of Rs 6, 00,000 was met from the Perfor- mance Grant share of the Panchayat. People make use of the facili- ties between 6.00 am and 8.00 pm. Around 30-50 persons use it as resting place, waiting shed and also place for reading newspaper. For se- nior citizens, it functions as a place for get-together, gathering, and sharing. The structure also has the potential to emerge as a venue for cultural events.
