ADDITIONAL NOTES and/or THINGS TO REMEMBER FOR NEXT MEETING 5 Lobbying YOUR MPP 2.0 Letter Template (Date) (Name of MPP and constituency) (Title ) (Address ) Dear (Name of MPP), I am writing to you today to request a meeting to discuss critical issues faced by your constituents. As you are aware, in 2009 Ontario’s MPPs unanimously passed the Poverty Reduction Act. Poverty affects all of us and it is important that the government and MPPs takes steps to reduce and eventually eradicate poverty for all. Even though 19,000 fewer children live in poverty now with the help of the first poverty reduction strategy to reduce child poverty by 25% in 5 years, hundreds and thousands of children still have to deal with the harsh realities of living on low income. Within our own community, we have children whose parents cannot afford to pay for even one meal a day on occasion, who struggle to pay for appropriate winter clothing, who cannot afford to pay for field trips, school stationary, and birthday presents – things that no child should have to do without. Moreover, many of these parents work an equivalent of full-time, full year in low paid, precarious jobs. The overall unemployment rate in our (city/region) of (x%) and the youth unemployment rate of (x%) is of grave concern. We have xxx low income households in our city/region waiting for affordable housing and they can expect to wait x years before finding suitable accommodation. The problematic state of childcare funding and services, too, is of concern – particularly as young parents on modest- to low- income are really struggling with finding affordable, high quality childcare for their children which in turn affects their transition into the labour market. We need to start tackling the social and economic issues of today for the benefit of future generations. I am extremely concerned that the level of poverty in our community and in our province will only get worse if most of the recommendations made by the Drummond Commission are adopted, and that this increase in poverty will have a further detrimental impact on our economy. I want to further discuss these pressing issues with you and bring forward recommendations on tackling poverty on behalf of our constituency and in our province. Please contact me at (phone number) or (email address) to set up a date and time for this meeting. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, (Your signature) First Name Last Name Full Address 6 Lobbying YOUR MPP 3.0 Local Media Release Template Citizens engage local MPP on harsh realities of poverty in constituency Today, a group of concerned citizens met with XX, MPP to voice their concerns around the issue of poverty in the constituency, and to warn against the negative impact that the Ontario government’s economic decisions will have on the community’s social and economic well-being. The group, who are also involved in (Ontario Campaign 2000/Alliance for a Poverty Free Toronto), raised their concerns on the rate of unemployment in the area/province, the impact that current government cuts have had on youth, and the lack of affordable housing/childcare in the area that deters modest- and low- income residents from pursuing good jobs. The group’s main message at the meeting was that the economy will only do well if we, as families and as members of civil society, are able to pursue a decent standard of living – which is far from the case right now. XX, one of the community members that met with the MPP states, “Quote” YY added, “Quote” -30- Insert local Contact name and number Use as required: Ontario Campaign 2000 is a non-partisan, Ontario-wide coalition of more than 60 organizations committed to eradicating child & family poverty in Ontario. The Alliance for a Poverty-Free Toronto is a Toronto-based network of community groups, agencies, concerned residents and individuals, (including persons with lived experience of poverty), working for the eradication of poverty in the city. Queen’s Park Today – Daily Report August 20, 2020 Quotation of the day “They demanded — under duress — that we stop supporting Belinda [Karahalios]. We are appalled at this bullying and abuse of power. It is a direct attack on our democracy!” The now-derecognized PC riding association in Cambridge sends out flyers attacking Premier Doug Ford and the PC Party over alleged "intimidation tactics." Today at Queen’s Park Written by Sabrina Nanji On the schedule The house reconvenes on Monday, September 14. The roster for the Select Committee on Emergency Management Oversight — which will scrutinize ongoing extensions of emergency orders via Bill 195 — has been named. The majority-enjoying PC side will feature Bob Bailey, Christine Hogarth, Daryl Kramp, Robin Martin, Sam Oosterhoff, Lindsey Park and Effie Triantafilopoulos. The New Democrat members are Gilles Bisson, Sara Singh and Tom Rakocevic; Liberal MPP John Fraser will take up the Independent spot. The committee was struck as an accountability measure because the PCs empowered themselves to amend or extend the emergency orders for up to the next two years, without requiring a vote or debate in the legislature. Bill 195, the enabling law, also requires the premier or a designate of his choosing to appear at the special committee to justify any changes to the sweeping emergency orders. Premier watch An RFP for the next leg of the Eglinton Crosstown tunnelling project will be issued today. Premier Doug Ford announced the move in Mississauga Tuesday alongside cabinet’s transportation overseers Caroline Mulroney and Kinga Surma. Three construction consortiums have already been shortlisted and are now able to present their detailed costing plans to Infrastructure Ontario.

For more information or to register for the seminar contact Marianne Fedrigoni at 905-727-0514 or via e-mail at mariannefedrigoni@sympati- co.ca. Winners tied At exactly noon Friday, two of The Auroran’s telephone lines lit up. The editor answered one, the receptionist the other. Both callers identified last week’s front page picture contest as being “reversed” and both were assured they were the first caller, according to the rules set out. So both get a non-alcoholic dinner for two at Jonathan’s, since it would be rude to call one back and say they lost when, in fact, they did- n’t. Winners were Alvin Thompson and Vicki MacNeil. Why the reversed picture? Well, since the photo was taken “from the street”, (a clue to the answer) the reflection in the window of the store across the road revealed backward lettering. The editor decided if it ran the way it was taken, it would “look wrong”, so the production department reversed the picture, making the lettering readable.

  • Not All Qualified Voters Have Full Enfrancisement in This Election: Advocacy Group
This page was exported from - The Auroran Export date: Sat Oct 2 15:01:16 2021 / +0000 GMT Not all qualified voters have full enfrancisement in this election: advocacy group 21.5 per cent of all Ontario citizens, more than three million citizens, including all in York Region, will not have the democratic right to elect all their municipal representatives in the municipal election. It is a charter right to vote. It is a human right to vote. It is a civil liberty to vote. Why are the citizens of York Region to be partially deprived of this fundamental right? THE ISSUE ?Bill 5 Better Local Government Act 2018? creates a jurisdiction that will have two types of citizens: those with full democratic rights and those without. In fact, 21.5 per cent of Ontario's population, or more than three million citizens, will be partially disenfranchised. It is a two-class entitlement system. This is indefensible. This is not democracy. Since Confederation, groups who were not enfranchised (i.e. Aboriginal people, women, Japanese, Chinese, to name some) fought long and hard to win the right to vote. Over the past few years, many of York Region's citizens have also fought for full enfranchisement. They want the right to vote for the most senior elected representative they have, to wit the Chair of York Regional Council. This right was realized when the law was changed in 2016 after the introduction of the Bill to make this change by then-MPP Chris Ballard. It was not a partisan stance. Here is a sketch of the support throughout several attempts to affect this change in York Region: In addition to Chris Ballard, supports included the then-MPP for Newmarket-Aurora, Frank Klees (PC), the then-MPP for Richmond Hill Reza Moridi (Liberal), the MPP for Thornhill Gila Martow (PC), the then MPP for Oak Ridges-Markham Helena Jaczek (Liberal), the then-MPP for Simcoe North Julia Munro (PC), who not only supported the bill, but also spoke in support of the bill in the Legislature.

  • Toronto City Summit Alliance Steering Committee
For immediate release Politicians urged to tackle traffic woes 87% of residents say public transit should be regional spending priority Toronto – April 29, 2014 – On the eve of a new provincial budget, a majority of residents in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) say they are more likely to vote for politicians who support new, dedicated dollars to get us moving. That’s the message CivicAction and a coalition of nearly two dozen business, labour, health, community, and environmental groups are delivering to Ontario MPPs and party leaders. The group points to the results of an April Angus Reid Forum poll* showing that 87% of GTHA residents want to see transportation as a regional spending priority, and 83% said they would more likely support new taxes or fees if they were put into a dedicated fund for transportation. Half of the GTHA’s elected officials - including more than 50% of MPPs across the three major political parties - have signed CivicAction’s “Get a Move On” pledge that calls for dedicated, efficient, and sustainable investment in our regional transportation priorities. They have been joined by thousands of GTHA residents. **See the full list below of politicians who have signed the CivicAction pledge. CivicAction and its partners are looking to all of Ontario’s party leaders to be clear on how they will invest in the next wave of transportation improvements for the region – both in the spring budget and in their party platforms. Quotes: “We cannot pass the buck for our aging infrastructure to the next generation,” says Sevaun Palvetzian, CEO of CivicAction.
