HOLLYFIELD SCHOOL FUND

The Hollyfield School is here to provide an outstanding educational experience, complemented by the values that we instil in our students of self-reliance, responsibility and honesty.

In contrast with our aspirations & ambitions for your children, our public sector funding is frozen and our capital allocation funding has been slashed. Providing the best environment for learning and the best life opportunities under these circumstances is ever more challenging.

The Hollyfield School Fund has been established to enable us to advance the education and welfare of all our students. Funds raised are used to provide first rate resources and opportunities for everyone at Hollyfield School.

We have been fortunate over the years to have had a number of benefactors who have shared our vision and have generously helped us towards our goals. For example, they have provided financial support for the excellent annual school drama productions and also helped us improve facilities such as the refurbishment of our science labs. In recent years, Hollyfield School Fund monies have helped us rebuild the student toilet block and to provide a wonderful outside learning environment, The Hollywood Wildlife Garden. We are also looking forward to the internal and external refurbishment of the canteen facilities.

One of the ways in which you can support The Hollyfield School is to provide financial assistance. Your support enables the school to consider projects and equipment to benefit the students that would not ordinarily be affordable within the annual school funding.

The current suggested contribution is £30 per month, per child, or £360 per year.

For the majority of donors (who are UK residents) ticking the gift aid box will enable us to reclaim a further 25 pence per £1 from the tax office. While some families support at a higher level, others prefer to give to the school in other ways, for example, by donating their skills. Whatever donation you feel able to make is greatly appreciated and will be used to benefit all our students.

How you can contribute

• A donation form, with Gift Aid declaration follows.

If you feel able to contribute a small, regular contribution, please complete the forms and return it to the Bursar in the Finance office at school.

Well done Amelia Amelia Bell was part of a 4x300m Relay team who won Silver at last weekend’s County Relay Championships where their Kingston AC and Polytechnic Harriers broke the championship record clocking a time of 2:58.75s. Amelia was also in a relay team in the 4x100m who came 4th missing out on Bronze by 0.08s!

The U17 women 4x100m squad came close to getting a Bronze medal, but were beaten by just 8/00 into 4th! Fired up by missing out on a medal in the shorter relay, next up were the two U17 women’s teams in their 4x300m relay. The lead was changing all the time between Woking and our A team, but Amelia Bell and her team mates had to settle for silver by only 2 or 3 metres despite smashing the club record. Congratulations Amelia, what a fantastic achievement! Good luck for the remainder of the season.

Well done Amelia from all at Hollyfield and good luck in future.

The Royal Borough’s Crown Court Church Service & Procession A special Service to pray for those involved in the administration of our Justice System within the UK and, in particular, our local Crown Court Judges and Magistrates took place on Monday 18 September 2017 and 3 of our students along with Mrs Kerridge attended, here is their account:

“First we walked with Mrs Kerridge to the church. When we arrived we sat down with a few other schools. When the Mayor and the judges arrived we had to stand up, and then it started. We sang the national anthem and then the priest said a few prayers. The mayor and judges said some speeches and we sang a couple of hymns. We stood up once more as the Mayor and judges left the church. Finally, we walked past cadets and Tiffin upper school. We felt very important.”

Next week Year 10 will be having their Form photos taken for the display boards. It is important that they wear the correct uniform and look smart during this week.

Year 10 Helpers for Open Evening A number of Year 10 students have been selected to help at Open Evening. This is a really important event for the school and an honour to be selected for. Please can you ensure that your son/daughter uniform is impeccable for this event.

This will involve talks from a number of senior members of staff about issues such as study skills. This event starts at 6.30pm in the hall. Please inform the school office if you can attend or not. We look forward to seeing you.

SUBJECT NEWS……………. Performing Arts Academy – Miss O’Shea, Mr Fraser, Miss Neville This year, we have launched a new Performing Arts Scholarship for twenty-five talented students in Year 7. The students, who wrote letters of application and attended a special workshop audition day last summer, receive extra Drama and Music lessons each week. They are also a form group, and each morning, they sing with their form teacher, Miss Neville.

This week, we received a special delivery: the students' Performing Arts blazer badges. They are silver drama masks, which are symbols of the Ancient Greek muses: one for comedy and one for tragedy. We hope we will see more smiles than frowns this year, and we are happy to report that our scholars have made an excellent start to their Hollyfield lives.

Drama– Mr Fraser This week, we welcomed a wonderfully excited group of Year 7 students to our weekly Drama Club, where they worked with students from Year 7 to compete in the Still Image Olympics! The ideas and performances (on themes as diverse as 'Paris Fashion Week', 'A Tropical Island' and 'The Past') were incredibly entertaining, and students expertly showcased their use of facial expressions, gestures and levels. Drama Club is open to all students and takes place in A1 on Thursdays from 12.30 to 1.00pm.

Connections 2018 We are thrilled to announce that Ilex (Hollyfield’s theatre company) has been selected to take part in the National Theatre’s Connections Festival in 2018. Connections is a huge and wonderful youth theatre festival, which takes place each year. 250 groups, schools and young companies from across the country will perform specially commissioned plays in their home venues and also at a professional partner theatre. They are assisted in each venue by an Associate Director from the National Theatre, who watches the performance, speaks to the students and gives really helpful feedback.

This year, we have been given the chance to perform a beautiful play ‘Blank’, by Alice Birch, which will really stretch our students and help them to develop their skills as actors and technicians. We are also over the moon to report that our partner theatre is The Lyric, Hammersmith, which is an amazing venue. We are so excited!

If you would like to know a little more about the festival, follow this link – and you may see some familiar faces: https://www.nationaltheatre.org.uk/learning/connections/connections-festival.

English – Mrs Holden We are absolutely delighted with our GCSE results in 2017 with 83% of students receiving a strong pass or better in English (far higher than the national average.) In order to ensure our Year 11 cohort this year have great success we have started two extra- curricular support sessions:

• Keeping Language alive (KLA) on Tuesdays in A3 3-4. Some students will be required for these sessions that are primarily focus on language skills as we crack on with poetry and A Christmas Carol in most lessons until Christmas. All students are welcome to attend • Masterclasses designed for students aiming for 7-9 grades. All students are welcome to attend these sessions in A9 on a Thursday 3-4. • We will also be having our first Language PPE of the year on 5 October to give our students the best chance of succeeding in the summer. Practice makes perfect!

What are we studying at KS4? Christmas has arrived early in the English Department with Year 11 lessons being split between A Christmas Carol and conflict poetry with a weekly lesson linking to language. With each GCSE there is a great deal of cross over with skills. For example analysing passages of text is something that students will do in both Language and Literature. Your child will need to have their own copy of A Christmas Carol to annotate in class. Any edition will do as long as it is not abridged and is the full text.

In Year 10 lessons have been split between A Christmas Carol and Language Paper 1 skills. As with Year 11 Your child will need to have their own copy of A Christmas Carol to annotate in class. Any edition will do as long as it is not abridged and is the full text.

We have organised a trip to see Jane Eyre on Monday 9 October - 7pm at the National Theatre. Students have already paid for this and further details will follow shortly.

What are we studying at KS3? Students in Year 7, 8 and 9 are all taking units entitled ‘Explorations in creative reading and writing’. This is a chance for students to learn how to write creatively for impact and to learn how to analyse language and structure in a wide range of texts. In Year 9 it is more specifically linked to GCSE skills so that our students are as prepared as possible for the challenges ahead.

We have an exciting new Young Writers’ Group on a Tuesday in A6 3-4 that Mrs Smith will run every week. This club will offer students the opportunity to write creatively for pleasure and will include guest authors and competitions. Anyone in Years 7-8 is welcome.

Events coming up Gothic week: week beginning 16 October National Poetry Day: 28 September Please visit the English Department in C1 and LRC Open Evening on 5 October!

PE – Mr Miller Winning Start The Year 7 football team kicked off their season with a win on Wednesday afternoon. Playing away at Raynes Park the game was split into quarters so that both managers could make a number of changes. William started the game in holding midfield and was given the armband for the week and he led from the front with a composed performance. Ahead of him Harvey had a good game and opened the scoring with a well taken half volley into the corner. However, we weren't on top for long with Raynes Park equalising with just a couple of minutes played. Tyler had other ideas and his rocket of a free kick flew into the top corner. We led into the break but soon after Raynes Park equalised and then took the lead. The boys settled into the game with Sam putting in a good shift, being well supported by Jamie on the wing. His shot was deflected and left Filip with an easy side-footed tap in. The game was on. We left it late, Jamie with another good shot that was saved by the keeper, this time Louie with the tap in. Louis Mac deserves a mention for his solid work at the back and thanks to Beau for slotting in at LB and dominating down the flank. Well done to all the boys that were involved this week. I hope attendance at football club continues to rise in numbers to keep the team competitive across the season.

Falcon No 1 Inter-house competitions kicked off this week with Year 7 football on the MUGA. The turn-out was strong and there were some excellent performances. Sienna was the stand out for the Falcon team and even nutmegged the goalkeeper to score. Falcon had to rotate between two teams as they had so many players. Well done to both Osprey and Eagle, make sure you work hard again next time. Next week welcomes Year 8 to the competition and I hope it is just as competitive.

Year 10 Off With A Bang The boys played their first game of the season against a Coombe A/B side. Playing with a tight defensive set-up of 5-3-2 meant that there was always cover to close down the attack and after 18 minutes the first goal was scored. The corner was whipped in by Fred and captain Cam nodded home. We continued to work hard and communicate well and when a hald clearance fell to Beau, he sent a rocket into the bottom 13

The Hollyfield School

corner from range. Only a minute later Bruno made it 3 after some scrappy play by both teams in the area. Going into half time at 3-0 was good and the team talk was centred around more of the same. Jake came on for Jack at RB and had an excellent half showing some real pace, with Tom doing the same down the left. Barney also deserves a mention for his performance in the back line as the boys had a very strong game. Jesse was a handful for the full game, he didn't get on the score sheet this week but his work rate was hugely impressive. Well done to all of the boys and lets look forward to the rest of the season.

CATERING FAQs

We have put together a list of our FAQs we encounter regarding school meals and the canteen at Hollyfield.

Please let us know if you have any unanswered questions regarding free school meals - email [email protected].

1) How do I know what my son/daughter eats in the school canteen and if he/she is using his/her Free School Meal allowance?

You can check/view what your child eats at the canteen via Parentmail (our internet payment system). Click on the ‘your account’ option and then payments in the top right hand corner, click on the orange icon in the dinner money balance. This will give you a list of when meals were purchased and click on view to see what was bought.

2) What are the criteria for Free School Meals and how do I apply?

Residents of Richmond and Kingston Boroughs can apply online through this link https://www.kingston.gov.uk/info/200130/education_schools_and_nurseries/364/form_apply_for_free_s chool_meals.

3) What is the Free School meal allowance at Hollyfield and what are the restrictions?

Students receive £2.30 on their account every day which can be used before school, at break and lunchtime. This amount does not rollover if it is not spent. However, if a purchase is made before school or at break time then the allowance may not be enough to cover a meal. We encourage you to add £1 per day to top up the free allowance for additional purchases.

4) How do I know what is on offer in the canteen and the prices?

Please see the link to our latest prices/flyers http://www.hollyfield.kingston.sch.uk/hfs2014v3/parents.html

If you have any queries about these points please contact:

IN CASE OF SEVERE WEATHER CONDITIONS

OPENCHECK

Circumstances can arise from time to time when it becomes necessary to close the school due to extreme weather or other unforeseen events. In the event of severe weather we shall do everything we can to remain open but if at any time you wish to check if the school is open, you may do so in the following ways.

Hollyfield uses OpenCheck, a service operated by LGFL to provide up-to-date information to parents or carers, indicating whether a school is open or closed. In order to check our current status, simply browse to the OpenCheck website (http://map.lgfl.org.uk/opencheck), select “Kingston upon Thames” as the borough and “The Hollyfield School and Sixth Form Centre” as the school.

If you are unable to contact the main school switchboard, the status of the school can also be checked by calling 020 8408 7508 and keying in the school’s DCSF code: 3145404

Please also ensure you check the school website for regular updates.
