Detective Inspector Jackie Downes has made a phenomenal contribution to the Alzheimer’s Society, thanks to her relentless fundraising efforts. She held a bake-off at Wrexham Police Station, judged by DCI Oldfield, DCI Beck and Julie Adams—an event which raised an amazing £235.45. Star Baker was awarded to DI Tim Evans (& Mrs Evans) and the award for Prettiest Cake went to Emma Watts PC 2136. Not only that, Jackie also ran the 2014 Virgin London Marathon in April, and has so far raised an unbelievable £6,755 to help maintain carer support groups and research. This achievement shall go a long way in supporting individuals with Dementia, so full credit goes to Jackie on a fantastic effort!!

Ffrindiau Dementia Friends

Dementia Friends is a social action movement funded by the Department of Health for England and the Cabinet Office, and is led by the Alzheimer’s Society as a strand of its work to create Dementia Friendly Communities. The goal is to enable people to live well with dementia and feel part of their community, by improving the understanding of dementia for 1 million people in society and inspiring them to take action and allow stigma to be alleviated. A Dementia Friend is someone who has attended a one hour information session and has committed to an action which will make the lives of people living with dementia a little bit better. Anyone of any age can be a Dementia Friend and every action counts—from helping someone to find the right bus to spreading the word about dementia on social media. Every Dementia Friend will receive a badge and an information card. This campaign is being delivered in order to pass along the 5 key messages which we feel everyone should know about dementia. It is not a substitute for training, but is rather an appetiser to allow somebody to form a basic foundation for their understanding. It is also great for employers to be able to demonstrate that their workforce is dementia friendly! All that is required is 60 minutes of your time, and a room where people can sit comfortably. If you would like to find out more about Dementia Friends please visit www.dementiafriends.org.uk

Dementia Awareness Week is a flagship awareness-raising campaign in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. 2014’s primary aim was to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s Society and to raise funds in local communities and increase our supporter base. Under the umbrella of ’What’s on your mind?’, we took three common ideas about finding it difficult to talk about concerns and paired them with simple imagery—these were: Don’t bottle it up; Don’t bury your head in the sand; and Don’t brush it under the carpet. The simple call to action is to ‘Talk to us today’ and is aimed at anybody who has an immediate and/or serious concern about dementia—either for themselves, a family member or a friend; and for them to recognise the Alzheimer’s Society as the ’go to’ place tor dementia. With staff taking part in the Community Roadshow, Dementia Friends Sessions, Networking Events and Presentations, we were working to improve local understanding and awareness.

Jacky Baldini, Sue Brockley, Rhoda Highton, Liz Wilks and Bev Perkins were given the Mold Marquee privilege of using the P + A Garden Centre in This year, we also held a Marquee at Mold as a further venue to promote our local Mold Market Day to give local residents services in North Wales, and maintain the the option to discuss any concerns with proactive approach to Dementia Awareness the staff, and to further promote our Week. services.

This is a chance to try something new, or to rediscover a past interest — as well as tackle social isolation and build confidence by keeping mentally, socially and physically active, whilst working towards Alzheimer’s Society’s vision to create Dementia Friendly Communities. Courses have already begun in North Wales including art; creative writing; sugar crafting; DIY and IT. For their Summer Plans, the team are considering courses such as Fishing, Gardening and Woodland Skills.

Each of these members have been taking this role very seriously and have been able to use this as a reason to enjoy the lovely North Wales scenery and partake in weekend walks locally, which will allow them to cope with the steep and rocky inclines of Britain’s highest peak. They shall begin their climb at 10pm, with the aim of reaching the summit in time for sunrise and some spectacular views, no doubt—and all for a great cause! Football Friendly

Liz Wilks, Befriending Manager, set up a Football Side by Side Befriending Group, which has gone from strength to strength! This service offers social contact to people with dementia who want to continue to share their passion for the sport. The group volunteers use football images and memorabilia to revive memories of players, matches, goals and incidents from their footballing past consequently encouraging meaningful conversation. These footballing memories can trigger a recollection of other events and stories from the person’s life. She is currently running one in Wrexham whereby 5 gentlemen are supported by football fans of Wrexham FC. Meeting at Wrexham Football Stadium, The Racecourse, they are lucky enough to be able to use a couple of the Corporate Boxes—one for the group and the other for the carers to meet for a coffee and a chat. Of course, the group lasts 90 minutes—although no pie and pint at half time! Liz and the Befriending Team are now working with Colwyn Bay FC and Rhyl FC to start up similar groups, and already the interest is showing, For an opportunity to volunteer for this please contact Emma Gough or Liz Wilks directly at [email protected].
