It may very well be the last as well, but as I used to say in my previous career “nothing is certain on the waterfront” and nothing is certain here as well. It has been just shy of 19 years and it doesn’t get easier. It is like the old adage “between a rock and a hard place” in that there have never been a better lot of artists than there are now: Dale Watson, Justin Trevino, Amber Digby, Ron Williams etc yet the major label music scene is, for a lack of a better word stuffed. Yet some people are impossible to convince. Some people refuse to take anything but the CMT route. It wouldn’t matter if I said Ron Williams’ is the best cd I have had this year and is right up there with the best ever of Mark Chesnutt, Keith Whitley and co. If you watch CMT and enjoy it then I will sell you a share in the Sydney Harbour Bridge. If you watch it and question its merit we have the answers for you. Please read on. ----------------------------------- Ron Williams – “Texas Style” $32 If anything beats this as album of the year I will be very surprised.

March 2007 Newsletter ----------------------------------- Yesterday & Today Records 255A Church St Parramatta NSW 2150 phone/fax: (02) 96333585 email: [email protected] web: www.yesterdayandtoday.com.au ------------------------------------------------------ Postage: 1 cd $2.00/ 2cd $3/ 3-4 cds $5.80* (*Recent Australia Post price increase.) Guess what? We have just celebrated our 18th anniversary. Those who try things we recommend are rewarded. We have stayed in business for one reason and that is we have never attempted to appeal to the lowest common denominator as mainstream outlets do. At the same time we recognise that people do have different tastes and to some CMT is actually good. We also appeal to those people and offer many mainstream items in our bargain bin. But the legends and true country music are our bread butter and will always be. If you see something you think you may like but are worried let us know. If you pass our inquisition we may be able to send it on a sale or return basis. I say inquisition because if your favourite artists are SheDaisy and Rascal Flatts we certainly aren’t going to risk something as precious as Justin Trevino. By the same token we believe great music is timeless and knows no bounds. People may think chuck steak is good until they try the best rump! Recently I had the pleasure of seeing Dale Watson. Before hand I had the added pleasure of sitting in with my compatriot Eddie White (a.k.a. “The Cosmic Cowboy”) for an interview at the 2RRR Studios. Dale is a humble, engaging and extremely likeable man with a passion for tradition.

1 The TRUMPET of ORAN THADDEUS PAGE “HOT LIPS” Solographer: Jan Evensmo Last updated: March 31, 2020, April 28, 2021 2 Born: Dallas, Texas, Jan. 27, 1908 Died: NYC. Nov. 5, 1954 Introduction: Hot Lips Page was for unknown reasons rather marginally recognized in my Oslo Jazz Circle upbringing, and only later I opened my ears to his fine trumpet playing! Dan Morgenstern’s various liner notes helped a lot too! History: First music lessons from his mother, a former school-teacher. Early efforts on clarinet and saxophone, specialised on trumpet from the age of 12. Joined kids’ band led by bass drummer Lux Alexander. Left music temporarily, attended high school in Corsicana,Texas, left to do manual work in Seminole oil fields in Texas. Became regular member of band accompanying Ma Ra iney, made first visit to New York with Ma Rainey for bookings at the Lincoln Theatre. Worked with a T.O.B.A. circuit touring band, accompanied Bessie Smith, Ida Cox, etc. Joined Troy Floyd Band in San Antonio, also worked in Texas with Sugar Lou and Eddie’s Hotel Tyler Band. Was heard with this band by bassist Walter Page (no relation) and subsequently joined the Blue Devils band early in 1928. Left the band in 1930 to join Bennie Moten’s band, worked mainly with Moten until 1935, after that leader’s death (April 1935) led own quintet in and around Kansas City. Worked as a specialty act with Count Basie at the Reno Club, Kansas City (1936), was signed by manager Joe Glaser and moved to New York.

There are Literally hundreds upon hundreds of great titles. If you would like to order from this newsletter you can email, phone or post an order. If phoning please feel free to call after hours From 8.00am up until 7.00pm is fine. I have a couple of pieces of bad news. Firstly my dear mum, Rose Reid, passed away on February 23rd. Many knew her as she worked Wednesdays at the old Parramatta store from 1990-2000 and filled in when I went on buying trips. It has been a trying period but I can honestly say she loved her time in the shop especially meeting and talking to many fine people and was a keen music buff, something that has passed on through the genes. Secondly, we lost a dear friend in Norm Pyne. Many who went to the Parramatta store would have seen a blind guy getting round with only a cane. My admiration for Norm was limitless. I never considered him handicapped in any way and he was always thankful for his independence. It is a sad irony of life that it is probably this independence which saw him involved in an horrific accident which cost him his life.

  • Merle Haggard's New Beginnings Is Determining Where to Start
Aug. 5, 1990---- GOSHEN, Ind. The trouble with talking about Merle Haggard's new beginnings is determining where to start. The most ashen voice in contemporary country music has weathered more entrees than a roving pack of Weight Watchers. Haggard tasted three years of life in San Quentin on a burglary rap and repatterned his life in the prison textile mill. Haggard has been married at least four times and has at least five children. Haggard has recorded 66 albums, which cover 574 songs. He has had 38 No. 1 country hits, which is more than Hank Williams Sr. and Johnny Cash combined. Haggard's confessional "Today I Started Loving You Again," has been covered by more than 400 artists. New beginnings are old hat for Haggard. A couple of weeks ago, he concluded a monthlong tour at the Elkhart Country 4-H Fair in Goshen. Haggard was bouncing around the country in his silver Chief Santa Fe tour bus with 8-month-old daughter Jenessa and his girlfriend Theresa, who is Jenessa's mother. Haggard should have been promoting "Blue Jungle," his fine new album for his new label, Curb Records, but his hourlong set focused on hits such as "Mama Tried," "Silver Wings" and "Are the Good Times Really Over for Good," to which the crowd cheered the lyric, " . .when a girl could still cook and chop wood." The Miss Elkhart County 4-H Poultry Queen watched with a one-out-of-two-ain't-bad look in her eyes. The only new song Haggard and the Strangers played was "Me and Crippled Soldiers," which he wrote in response to last year's U.S.
