According to park rangers from Kasara, Chitwan National Park (Santa Bahadur Magar and Amrita Pudasaini), local people were car- rying the snake from Nawalpur to Kathmandu. The snake was rescued by police officers and transferred to the park rangers, who subsequently released it into natural habitat. Fig. 1. Recent research has shown that C. bivirgatus has evolved a seemingly unique toxin (calliotoxin) that produces spastic paralysis in their prey by acting on the voltage-gated sodium (NaV) channels. We assembled a transcriptome from C. bivirgatus to investigate the molecular characteristics of these toxins and the venom as a whole. We find strong confirmation that this genus produces the classic elapid eight-cysteine three-finger toxins, that δ-elapitoxins (toxins that resemble calliotoxin) are responsible for a substantial portion of the venom composition, and that these toxins form a distinct clade within a larger, more diverse clade of C. bivirgatus three-finger toxins. On the basis of a review of available literature, original field observations and examination of museum collections, a preliminary list of 81 species (12 chelonians, 2 crocodiles, 23 lizards, and 44 snakes) is established, of which 52 (64 %) are reported from the province for the first time. The possible presence of additional species is discussed. Some biological data on the new specimens are provided including some range extensions and new size records. The herpetofauna of Phetchaburi shows strong Sundaic affinities, with about 88 % of the recorded species being also found south of the Isthmus of Kra. A biogeographic affinity analysis suggests that the Isthmus of Kra plays the role of a biogeographic filter, due both to the repeated changes in climate during the Quaternary and to the current increase of the dry season duration along the peninsula from south to north.

Last year at my request all the available specimens of Simotes and Oligodon in the Indian Museum were submitted to me for study, also all those available in the Bombay Natural History Society's collection. I also had an opportunity while in England of examining some of the specimens in the British Museum. To notes from this material I ha vc added notes from the many scores of specimens examined in smaller museums and of my own collecting. I propose in the following paper to review this genus and put on record all that is lmown of the various species up to date. In a previous paper (Joum. Bombay Nat. Hist. Soo., XIX, p. 556, foot-note) I showed from a study of skulls in my collection that Dumeril and Bibron had established a genus Oligoclon distinct from Simotes on the erroneous observation that species to which they applied the generic title Oligodon had no teeth in the palate. Later Boulenger discovered that some of these had palatine teeth, but he retained the genus as distinct from Simotcs on the erroneous assumption that these same species had no pterygoid teeth. All those whose skulls I have prepared, except doub"bfully templetoni, have pterygoid teeth so that the grounds for separating Oligodon from Simotes on d'entition do not exist. As Oligodon has priority (1827) over Simotes (1853) the former title must be retained to designate the whole.

During the last decade herpetological research has substantially improved our knowledge of species and their taxonomic status. However, additional work is needed on ecology and population viability within the framework of human impacts on natural ecosystems. These hu- man induced activities have led to severe fragmentation of formerly continuous forest in the wet zone and central hills of Sri Lanka, where most endemic and threatened species occur. Here I dis- cuss current development in biodiversity issues regarding the Convention on Biological Diversity and their effects on the future of herpetofaunal conservation in Sri Lanka. To better understand Sri Lanka’s conservation challenges and threats I discuss the following topics: Sri Lanka’s biogeogra- phy; its extant ecosystems and landscapes along with the changes resulting from patterns of hu- man settlement; human population growth and its concomitant impact on natural ecosystems; and a brief history of herpetological studies in Sri Lanka.
