Routes Asia 2016 Hosts ROUTES ASIA STRATEGY SUMMIT Sponsored by: Connecting the region

ZHANG XUIZHI, CEO of , gave an in-depth insight into the rapid growth and prospects for China’s largest LCC, which in July 2015 will celebrate its 10th birthday. In 2014 the airline transported over 11 million passengers, of which around 15% were on international flights. The carrier currently has a fleet of over 50, mostly from the heart of Asia Airbus, A320 narrow body aircraft – a figure which is expected to almost double in the next four years. In the slide shown it is claimed that Spring Airlines has the fourth lowest unit costs of any airline, beaten only by AirAsia, Ryanair and Tiger Airways. Spring launched a Japanese subsidiary in August 2014 operating from four airports. The airline’s main base in Shanghai will likely see further international growth bringing in leisure travellers keen to visit Shanghai Disney, which is forecast to bring in 10 Manila, Philippines million visitors annually. 6 – 8 March 2016

DISCUSSING THE EXPANSION OF LCCS in China and North Asia were Senthil Balan, Regional Group Head, Route & Fleet Planning, AirAsia Group; Conrad Cli¢ord, Regional VP for Asia-Pacific, IATA; Jonathan Hutt, Strategy and Branding Director, Spring Airlines; Andrew Cowen, Deputy CEO, Hong Kong Express; and moderator Andrew Herdman, Director General, Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA). There was general agreement that the principal requirements of creating a successful LCC were now fairly well understood, but that it was all a matter of execution. Low-cost is a “state of mind” and so the challenge for China’s big three carriers, some of which are actively planning low-cost subsidiaries, was to give them su¥cient independence and autonomy. The challenge for the AirAsia Group, which currently operates with eight di¢erent AOCs, was to get the di¢erent subsidiaries to work together, which according to Senthil Balan, required “a bit of give and take, but it kind of works”.

DEBATING THE TOPIC OF “Airports: Infrastructure – capacity, congestion, Discover the Philippines, the emerging construction – can countries keep up with demand?” were Vinoop Goel, Regional Head – Airport, Passenger, Cargo & Security – Asia-Pacific, International Air Trans- port Association (IATA); Mark Clarkson, Business Development Director, ASPAC, gateway connecting the east and west OAG; moderator David Stroud, Managing Director, ASM; Damon Wong, Assistant VP, Airline Development, Changi Airport Group; and Seb Mackinnon, Head of Airport Partnerships, Jetstar Group. Damon Wong highlighted how airports had to An ideal location in the heart of Asia and a critical entry point to be flexible and respond to the changing needs of the consumer. Changi had built over 500 million people in the ASEAN, combined with excellent a dedicated LCC terminal in 2006, but demolished it in 2012 to make room for the new Terminal 4, which will feature the latest in ‘fast travel’ technology to minimise air accessibility, idyllic beaches and solid infrastructure makes queuing. EXAMINING THE HOT TOPIC OF “Tourism – Capturing the China market” were Gerard Panga, Tourism Attaché, Philippine Consulate General, Philippine Tourism O¥ce in Shanghai; Xu Hongwei, Senior Manager Business Development, Qunar. routesonline.com com; moderator Mario Hardy, CEO, PATA; Dr Adam Wu, Chief Operating O¥cer, China Business Network; and Michael Burke, Assistant Director, Commercial, . Last year China became the world’s leading provider of international tourists with over 100 million, a tenfold increase in just over a decade. While many travellers stayed within Asia, there was growing interest in longer-haul destinations, but marketing was required to make travellers aware of some of the secondary and tertiary destinations. Qunar’s online travel platform enabled China’s passengers to find reassurance when travelling abroad. Overall, despite a slowing down in Chinese GDP growth, international air travel was still booming as the possibility of flying came within reach of ever more people, helped by extensive competition on many routes helping to keep fares low.
