Opinion Column Teen Suicide Awareness: A must in Schools By: Gaby Hawkins This month is Teen Suicide Awareness month. Teen suicide is a growing issue in every school, and some schools don’t bring any or enough attention to the subject. What’s all the awareness about? Well, to understand that you have to understand the issue itself. Life as a teen is very stressful and how we deal with what our peers say can determine our worth to ourselves. Sometimes this causes teens to be overwhelmed with everything around them and they become so broken down inside that they think the only way out is ending their life. Suicide awareness in schools is extremely important for the stability of students. It may seem obvious that awareness is a must because we need to reach out to those feeling like they can’t go on anymore. It’s also important because students need to be educated on how to help someone in that situation. Ending the silence and showing you care is the first step to making a statement. Along with that, suicide affects everyone not just the person in danger. Speaking up when no one else will, not only saves that person, but it saves everyone else associated with that person. This is a big deal, but you don’t have to do it all by yourself. Many students ignore this issue because they are too caught up in the sigma that embodies suicide. Some treat it as a big joke and throw it around lightly to everyone maliciously or otherwise. Some shy away from it because society has alienated the word to mean something awful. Yes, it is an awful thing, but it shouldn’t be treated and avoided like the plaque. It’s not scary, and a simple kind word to someone can save his or her life. It’s a big deal to that person. It helps his/her feel accepted and improves self worth. Certain things are being done to bring awareness to schools and they are all great tools that your average joe can use. There are posters with help lines and encouraging words. Speakers come into classes and talk about how you can save someone’s life and how to prevent it yourself. Surveys on how you feel about yourself and how you feel about suicide are extremely helpful to agencies working to end the silence. The best part is that talking about suicide becomes a catalyst for some people and they are motived to do more for the cause, share their personal story, and continue being compassionate towards everyone dealing with something hard. Finally the most important thing, don’t let society’s view on an issue determine how you, as an individual, feel about it. Stand up for whatever issue you believe in and speak out.

Teacher Spotlight By: Kennedy Wood

We’re starting off Teacher Spotlight with some new to Liberty Center High School this year. One of many is Ms. Mericle. She was born in Lima, Ohio but likes to say that her hometown is Columbus. She is really enjoying Liberty Center so far and says that the students are friendly and easy to talk to, and the teachers are really supportive. When asked what her favorite thing about Liberty Center is, she said, “I like that it’s easy to talk to the students.” She has done substitute teaching in previous years and says that it was hard to get the students to talk. In her spare time aside from teaching, she enjoys reading, gardening, watching foot- ball, and traveling. Her favorite movie is “Finding For- rester” and her favorite TV shows include “The Office” and “How I Met Your Mother.” She doesn’t own any pets but she loves dogs and always had German Shepherds growing up. She loves dogs and also loves bears, which is one of her favorite animals. She doesn’t play sports much, but she likes to watch sports like football and col- lege basketball. If Ms. Mericle could change places with a celebrity for a day, she would trade with Kate Middle- ton because she has prestige, a lot of independence, and because “Prince William is not too bad on the eyes ei- ther.” Being a teacher is her dream job. She really loves being around the students and we’re glad to have her here this year!

Mrs. Mott is in the spotlight this week. She was born in Texas and raised in Indiana. She graduated from Angola High School and then went on to Earlham College. Mrs. Mott really likes Liberty Center so far and says that it’s a good school. Her favorite thing about Lib- erty Center is the students. She says, “The students are awesome.” She has three younger children and enjoys playing with them in her spare time. She does not own any pets, but dogs are her favorite animals. Her favorite food is bread. She doesn’t have a favorite TV show, but she watches Dora with her kids. Soccer and basketball are her two favorite sports and she used to play soccer. Mrs. Mott really likes sports in general. Teaching math really is her dream job. “It sounds cheesy, but I like teaching math.” If she had $1 million, she would make college scholarships for the people that can’t afford col- lege. We’re glad you’re enjoying Liberty Center so far, and keep up the good work!
