NASCAR Sponsorship: Who is the Real Winner? An event study proposal A thesis submitted to the Miami University Honors Program in partial fulfillment of the requirements for University Honors with Distinction by Meredith Seurkamp May 2006 Oxford, Ohio ii ABSTRACT NASCAR Sponsorship: Who is the Real Winner? An event study proposal by Meredith Seurkamp This paper investigates the costs and benefits of NASCAR sponsorship. Sports sponsorship is increasing in popularity as marketers attempt to build more personal relationships with their consumers. These sponsorships range from athlete endorsements to the sponsorship of an event or physical venue. These types of sponsorships have a number of costs and benefits, as reviewed in this paper, and the individual firm must use its discretion whether sports sponsorship coincides with its marketing goals. NASCAR, a sport that has experienced a recent boom in popularity, is one of the most lucrative sponsorship venues in professional sports. NASCAR, which began as a single race in 1936, now claims seventy-five million fans and over one hundred FORTUNE 500 companies as sponsors. NASCAR offers a wide variety of sponsorship opportunities, such as driver sponsorship, event sponsorship, track signage, and a number of other options. This paper investigates the fan base at which these marketing messages are directed. Research of NASCAR fans indicates that these fans are typically more brand loyal than the average consumer. NASCAR fans exhibit particular loyalty to NASCAR sponsors that financially support the auto racing sport. The paper further explains who composes the NASCAR fan base and how NASCAR looks to expand into additional markets. -

NASCAR/Daytona 500 Advertising Advisory The Daytona 500 is held every February at the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona, Florida. Many advertisers, especially bars and restaurants, will want to advertise Daytona 500 related promotions in the days and weeks leading up to the race. Even though the advertising blitz maybe heavy, it’s important to remember the law regarding the use of NASCAR/Daytona 500 trademarks. NASCAR and the Daytona 500 International Speedway control all marketing and proprietary rights with respect to the race. Both NASCAR and the Daytona 500 use their trademarks in order to generate revenue and both reserve the use of trademarked material to official sponsors and licensees who have invested large amounts of money to acquire the specific rights to these marks. NASCAR and the Daytona 500 International Speedway retain the exclusive right to control marketing of the race and all of its associated trademarks. These trademarks include the phrases “Daytona 500,” “The Great American Race, and the name of the racetrack itself, “The Daytona 500 International Speedway,” as well as all other associated graphics and logos. Additionally, the term “NASCAR” is a registered trademark of the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, Inc. Just as in other sports, individual racing teams also own federally registered trademarks for their team names and drivers (e.g., “Jack Roush Racing” or “Dale Earnhardt, Inc.”), nicknames, uniform, helmet and car designs. ADAM ALEXANDER Race Announcer, NASCAR XFINITY SERIES Co-Host, NASCAR RACE HUB Adam Alexander, a member of the FOX Sports family since 2006, serves as the play-by-play announcer for FOX NASCAR’s NASCAR XFINITY SERIES coverage, a position to which he was assigned in FOX’s inaugural season covering the series (2015). He also co-hosts NASCAR RACE HUB, FS1’s daily NASCAR news and information program, a role he assumed in September 2013, and plays a significant role in network hosting coverage of FOX NASCAR races. Alexander handled play-by-play for FS1 in the NASCAR GANDER OUTDOORS TRUCK SERIES for the 2014 and 2015 seasons and served in the same capacity for TNT’s coverage of the MONSTER ENERGY NASCAR CUP SERIES for five years (2010-’14). The versatile broadcaster was an integral part of SPEED’s motor sports coverage for years, hosting SPEED CENTER (2011-’13), NASCAR LIVE (2012-’13) and NASCAR IN A HURRY (2008-’10), as well as co-hosting NASCAR RACE HUB and SPEED CENTER in 2010. Alexander also contributed regularly on WIND TUNNEL WITH DAVE DESPAIN and served as the network’s face for breaking news and special reports from the SPEED Studios for years. Prior to transitioning into the studio and television booth, Alexander reported from pit road for SPEED’s coverage of the NASCAR GANDER OUTDOORS TRUCK SERIES (2006-’10), TNT’s portion of the MONSTER ENERGY NASCAR CUP SERIES season (2010) and for DirecTV Hot Pass. Alexander also has significant radio experience. MIKE JOY Race Announcer, FOX NASCAR Broadcasting veteran Mike Joy brings 50 years of motor sports experience to the booth as lead race announcer for FOX NASCAR in 2020, his 20th consecutive season with the network, alongside NASCAR Hall of Famer Jeff Gordon. Joy has led the network’s broadcast team since 2001, FOX’s first year as a NASCAR broadcast partner. Joy has broadcast most major forms of American motorsports for television and radio. Prior to joining FOX in 2001, Joy anchored CBS Sports’ coverage of the DAYTONA 500 from 1998-2000 after earning his stripes as a pit reporter for 15 years. In addition, Joy called the “Great American Race” for Motor Racing Network (MRN) Radio from 1977-’83 (as a turn announcer and anchor). The season-opening DAYTONA 500 marks the 41st DAYTONA 500 for which he has been part of live TV or radio coverage. In 2020, Joy covers his 45th Daytona Speedweeks. He is a charter member of the prestigious NASCAR Hall of Fame Voting Panel, and in December 2013, was named sole media representative on the Hall's exclusive Nominating Committee. Joy previously served on the voting panel for the International Motorsports Hall of Fame. Joy was the 2011 recipient of the esteemed Henry T. McLemore Motorsports Journalism Award, recognizing career excellence in the field, as well as the 2018 North Carolina Motorsports Association (NCMA) Jim Hunter Memorial Media Award.
