PROSPECTS FOR A ‘MODERN SYNTHESIS’ IN THE SCIENCES OF MIND Topic Editors: Kevin Moore, Lincoln University, New Zealand John Cromby, University of Leicester, UK Psychology straddles areas from the biological to the social and cultural. Within that vast range, there have been recent explosions of interest in neuropsychol- ogy, genetics and epigenetics, and the evolutionary bases of mindedness. Correspondingly, there have been conceptual innovations and new empirical evidence in relation to the embodied, social and dis- cursive processes supporting mind and personhood. Simultaneously, awareness of developmental processes and their dynamic interweaving of genetic, physio- logical, neurological, social and cultural elements has also increased. Might such developments help ‘connect the dots’ between diverse aspects of mindedness and the con- texts within which it arises? Whilst it seems clear that mind is co-constituted of both biological and socio-cultural processes, how might we bring these disparate realms of knowledge together? In a number of these areas, suggestive integrative possibilities have Photograph by John Cromby ‘Engineers been explored (e.g., predictive processing, embodied of the Imagination’ and situated cognition, dynamic developmental sys- tems theory) and insights such as a focus on action, ‘knowledge as skills’, embeddedness and connectivity have been pursued across a range of disciplines. This edited collection of articles bring together such possibilities – and others - in the same forum in order to provide an opportunity to re-visit a recurring discussion within theoretical psychology: The claimed lack of - and potential for - theoretical synthesis and unity. While the chapters range over a number of areas of research, this collection is focused on current prospects for conceptual synthesis within - or convergence of research between - aspects of mind Frontiers in Psychology 2 August 2016 | How Best to ‘Go On’? and mindedness. As is clear from the contributions, it highlights integrative conceptual pro- posals that emphasize action-orientation, process, embeddedness and connectivity – especially between explanatory ‘levels’. Beyond specific proposals for integration, several of the contributions explicitly or implicitly expose broader questions about the purpose of psychological research, the epistemological and ontological commitments required, and the relevant social, political and economic contexts within which such research is performed. This is perhaps inevitable since any aim for synthesis of various understandings of mind will - or should - lead to consideration of the general impli- cations, beyond the ‘science’, that follow from an integrated account of mind and mindedness. Whether or not the contributions in this volume provide insights into profitable paths towards greater theoretical synthesis in the sciences of mind or, alternatively, provide grist for the mill of renewed skepticism over the potential or even desirability of such synthesis is unpredictable. Whichever the outcome, we feel sure that they will help provoke future productive research in, and thinking about, the sciences of mind. As you all know, electrophysiological brain research has a long tradition going back as far as 1875 when the first report on the animal electroencephalogram (EEG) was published by Caton. The often forgotten Polish physiologist Adolf Beck was also a EEG pioneer many years before Hans Berger’s initial reports. Beck recorded electrical potentials in several brain areas evoked by peripheral sensory stimuli. Using this technique, Beck localised various centres in the brain of several animal species and described desynchronization in electrical brain potentials.

Damage to white matter tracts compromises the substrate for interneuronal connectivity. Analysing resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) can reveal dysfunctional patterns of brain connectivity and contribute to explaining the pathophysiology of clinical phenotypes in CSVD. Materials and methods: This systematic review provides an overview of methods and results of recent resting- state functional MRI studies in patients with CSVD. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) protocol, a systematic search of the literature was performed. Results: Of 493 studies that were screened, 44 reports were identified that investigated resting-state fMRI connectivity in the context of cerebral small vessel disease. The risk of bias and heterogeneity of results were moderate to high. Patterns associated with CSVD included disturbed connectivity within and between intrinsic brain networks, in particular the default mode, dorsal attention, frontoparietal control, and salience networks; decoupling of neuronal activity along an anterior–posterior axis; and increases in functional connectivity in the early stage of the disease. Conclusion: The recent literature provides further evidence for a functional disconnection model of cognitive impairment in CSVD.

Particularly prevalent in Canada, MS is a leading cause of disability with extended personal and societal costs given its early onset (on average between 20- 40 years of age). Deficits in executive functioning are common and detrimental to employment, daily functioning and quality of life, however their precise nature remains underspecified. Two studies were undertaken to: (1) describe the executive processes affected in MS, including neurophysiological correlates, and (2) explore, in a double-blind randomized controlled trial, patients’ response to an intervention for improving behavioural self-regulation. Study 1 described significant functional limitations and impairments in processing speed and executive control of attention, memory and working memory in MS patients, both relative to neurologically healthy controls and as a monotonic function of disease severity. Mean amplitudes for event- related potentials (ERPs) including the P3 and the error-related negativity and positivity (ERN, Pe) were linked to behavioural markers of attention control and performance monitoring. ERP amplitudes and ERP-behavioural associations appeared sensitive to the presence and severity of executive dysfunction related to disease progression.

    Exploratory analysis of Publons metrics and their relationship with bibliometric and altmetric impact José Luis Ortega Institute for Advanced Social Studies (IESA-CSIC), Córdoba, Spain, [email protected] Abstract Purpose: This study aims to analyse the metrics provided by Publons about the scoring of publications and their relationship with impact measurements (bibliometric and altmetric indicators). Design/methodology/approach: In January 2018, 45,819 research articles were extracted from Publons, including all their metrics (scores, number of pre and post reviews, reviewers, etc.). Using the DOI identifier, other metrics from altmetric providers were gathered to compare the scores of those publications in Publons with their bibliometric and altmetric impact in PlumX, Altmetric.com and Crossref Event Data (CED). Findings: The results show that (1) there are important biases in the coverage of Publons according to disciplines and publishers; (2) metrics from Publons present several problems as research evaluation indicators; and (3) correlations between bibliometric and altmetric counts and the Publons metrics are very weak (r<.2) and not significant. Originality/value: This is the first study about the Publons metrics at article level and their relationship with other quantitative measures such as bibliometric and altmetric indicators.     CASE STUDY Improvement in a 6 year-old Child with Autistic Spectrum Disorder and Nocturnal Enuresis under Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care Allison Noriega, DC,1 Jonathan Chung, DC,2 Justin Brown, DC2 ABSTRACT Objectives: To report on the improvement of a pediatric patient with nocturnal enuresis and Autistic Syndrome Disorder (ASD), after undergoing upper cervical specific chiropractic care. Clinical Features: A 6 year-old oy who presented for chiropractic care with a history of nocturnal enuresis and ASD. The child experienced a traumatic irth and at the time of chiropractic care was following the Defeat Autism Now# (DAN#) Protocol. Intervention and Outcomes: An atlas su luxation complex was determined ased on clinical data collected at the first visit. O jective clinical evaluation included: static palpation, motion palpation, radiographs, paraspinal thermography, supine leg length ine(uality, as well as measurements of hip leveling, and ilateral weight distri ution. After we get fMRI data, we actually have various software and computer programming that including open source and commercial, it’s very hard to choose the best software to analyze data. What’s worse, it would cause final result imbalance and unstable when we combine more than software together, so that’s why we want to make a pipeline to analyze data. On the other hand, with the growing of machine learning, Python has already become one of very hot and popular computer programming. In addition, it is an open source and dynamic computer programming, the communities, libraries and contributors fast increase in the recent year.
