Mediumship in Spiritualism Mediumship or “message work” • Mediumship is the raison d'être of Spiritualist religious services • The mediumship por;on of the service is frequently referred to as the "proofs" por;on of the service. • Spiritualist services frequently last 2-3 hours. Healing usually takes up less than forty minutes, followed by a lecture, hymns, announcements, and then finally "message-work." • The length of ;me spent on message work varies depending on the number of working mediums, but usually consumes half of the total ;me spent at the service. • While people frequently arrive at the service late to miss the healing por;on, congregaon members almost never leave before message work begins, and almost never leave before it is over. Magicians on the Paranormal: An Essay with a Review of Three Books GEORGE P. HANSEN’ ABSTRACT: Conjurors have written books on the paranormal since the 1500s. A number of these books are listed and briefly discussed herein, including those of both skeptics and proponents. Lists of magicians on both sides of the psi controversy are provided. Although many people perceive conjurors to be skeptics and debunkers, some of the most prominent magicians in history have endorsed the reality of psychic phenomena. The reader is warned that conjurors’ public statements asserting the reality of psi are sometimes difficult to eval- uate. Some mentalists publicly claim psychic abilities but privately admit that they do not believe in them; others privately acknowledge their own psychic experiences. Thme current books are fully reviewed: EntraSensory Deception by Henry Gordon (1987), Forbidden Knowledge by Bob Couttie (1988), and Secrets of the Supernatural by Joe Nickel1 (with Fischer, 1988). The books by Gordon and Couttie contain serious errors and are of little value, but the work by Nickel1 is a worthwhile contribution, though only partially concerned with psi. Magicians have been involved with paranormal controversies for cen- turies, and their participation has been far more complex and multifaceted than the usual stereotype of magicians as skeptical debunkers. In this paper, I review three fairly recent skeptical books by magicians, but before these are discussed, some remarks are in order concerning conjurors’ in- volvement with psi and psi research because there has been little useful discussion of the topic in the parapsychology literature.’ It is important to understand this background because several magicians have had an impact on scientists’ and the general public’s perception of psychical research, and some have played a major role in the modem-day skeptical movement (Hansen, 1992).

He was a sensation and will again join the Reveen Company, if plans work out, to tour Australia later in the year. As near as I can make out from the clippings (and I don’t want to ask Kuda as this is to be a surprise) Kuda must be either 69 or 70 years old having been born in Aknmur, Kashmir, Pakistan in either 1905 or 1906. Early in his life he realized he had an ability not shared by many. This was concentration. We are all aware of the five senses but Kuda was to develop within himself a sixth sense or inner sense. Through his successful years of performing he has been headlined in papers around the world as: “The Wonder of the Century;” “One of the most famous ‘Makers of Magic’ who ever came out of the East;” and the “8th Wonder of the World.” In the thirties he made headlines in England (which were to be repeated in the U.S. in the forties) with his fire walking. A fire trench 25 feet long and six feet across was filled with seven tons of logs and a ton of charcoal.

In order to gain understanding of these alternative spiritual movements, we will draw upon social scientific studies of these groups, as well as explore images of these groups and their religious practices in both history and popular culture. This year, we will be focusing on the religion of Spiritualism, with a focus on the theme of "Spirits, Spirit Possession, and Spirit Communication." Spirit possession and talking to the spirits of the dead represent age-old religious themes that are undergoing revitalization in the modern world, with what appears to be a mainstreaming of Spiritualist beliefs within popular culture. This course will explore both the historical roots of Spiritualism, and the modern prevalence of Spiritualist themes in television shows such as Ghost Whisperer, Medium, and Ghost Hunters. Virtual Spirituality: The Negotiation and (Re)-Presentation of Psychic-Spiritual Identity on the Internet Tamlyn Ryan Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy September 2012 Department of Sociology University of York Abstract This research is an examination of how people engaged in psychic and spiritual interests use the internet to participate as a group through social media. Exploring how individuals take advantage of the opportunities afforded by the internet to pursue their interest in psychic spirituality reveals different ways of participating and interacting online. The ways in which individuals present their psychic-spiritual selves online, how they negotiate their online identities and make sense of their culture, is also examined. Using an eclectic methodological approach, this research used a combination of ethnographic methods and autoethnography to explore online psychic-spiritual culture. Documentary analysis of website text and images, together with participant observation, both covert and overt, were used to examine websites. Facebook interaction and psychic readings in online discussion board forums based on psychic-spiritual interests were analysed using discourse analysis. Autoethnographic self-reflections were also collected and analysed in order to capture an intrapsychic perspective of psychic reading culture. It was found that psychic practitioners use their websites to communicate the message that they are credible psychic readers whilst Facebook was found to be a site in which, through a delicate interplay of activity and performance, identity is constructed through interaction between the psychic reader and their Facebook friends. Psychic-spiritual discussion board forums meanwhile are sites of situated learning in which learner psychic readers learn to become appropriate members of the psychic- spiritual milieu.

Volume 3, Issue 4 Psychic News—the end? Autumn 2010 Psychic News has been reporting on spiritual and psychic matters since 1932, and is the world's longest-published newspaper of its kind. First published on 28th May 1932, it had subscribers in 28 countries. The newspaper was founded by Maurice Barbanell, who was reported to have been inspired by spirit guides to call it Psychic News. Also involved at the start were famous Fleet Street journalist and Spiritualist Hannen Swaffer, and Arthur Findlay, Spiritualist, scholar and stockbroker. The last issue was published at the end of July, but is not known if there is likely to be a re-launch in a different format. It is also not known if PN’s publisher, Psychic Press (1995) Ltd will continue to sell its other publications, as it will go into liquidation on 15 September. Early in 2009, PN received a generous donation from the Arthur Findlay College so that it could expand and, in the words of editor, Susan Farrow, “… return to its rightful place as a vibrant and committed international ambassador for Spiritualism”, but in a little more than a year PN is no more. It has been difficult to maintain sales over the years, the costs involved in producing the weekly newspaper exceeded the profits made from its sale. So, even after the recent changes, the familiar IRITUALISTS’ NATIONAL UNION paper will no longer appear in churches and other outlets around the world. Hopefully the SNU, nationally or regionally, will consider filling the void with information and news being made available to those, like us, who produce our own newsletter.
