Page 8 - The Town Crier NOVEMBER 2019 The Berry & District Historical Society The adventures of Alexander Berry After rescuing the survivors of The in 1810, Berry sailed away on his ship The City of Edinburgh towards Cape Horn. When they were nearly there, a fi erce storm ripped the sails to pieces, the rudder was knocked away and the ship drifted helplessly for two weeks until a makeshift rudder was devised and they managed to reach a bay in Tierra del Fuego. Berry A dispute arose with the crew about what to do: to run the ship aground in Patagonia or to continue. Berry did not want Museum to ground the ship, and they rounded the Horn with a load of 135 Queen Street copper, tin, and Peruvian bark (a source of quinine used to treat malaria) destined for Cadiz and made it safely to Rio de Janeiro. BERRY 2535 ONCE MORE WE On leaving there however, bad weather assailed the ship again. The vessel began to leak, became waterlogged, and had to be NEED YOUR abandoned. Berry managed to get to the Azores, thence to Lisbon, and on to Cadiz in Spain– unfortunately arriving on the day the French Marshalls Soult and Victor began to bombard that city - the fi rst day of a siege that was to last until August 1812. Of course, England was an enemy of France at this time. Berry then caught yellow fever. With admirable restraint he complained in his Reminiscences that he had lost his books. NOVEMBER 2019 The Town Crier - Page 9 Teela May (Reid) and Thomas Mayor Come to Berry For a Public Forum “Finding the Heart of the Nation” The Uluru “Statement from the Heart” & Indigenous Constitutional Recognition In December this year, Berry Uniting Church will host two strong emerging voices within the new generation of Aboriginal leaders. They are generously making time to come to Berry to help illuminate the real heart of the Uluru Statement, and clarify its role in the current debate around constitutional Indigenous recognition, truth telling and an Indigenous voice to parliament - a debate vitally important for all Australians. Teela May (Reid,) is a Wiradjuri and Wailwan woman, lawyer & activist born & raised in Gilgandra NSW. A lawyer with experience in criminal, civil & administrative law, Teela was involved in the Constitutional dialogue process that culminated in the Uluru Statement from the Heart. Teela fearlessly took former Prime Minister Turnbull to task on Q&A after his dismissal of the Statement from the Heart. Thomas Mayor, is a Torres Strait Islander, born and raised on Larrakia land, Darwin. An official of the CFMMEU, he was invited to attend the First Nations’ dialogue on constitutional recognition. He carried the Uluru Statement to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations throughout the nation. Author of “Finding the Heart of the Nation” ULURU STATEMENT FROM THE HEART We, gathered at the 2017 National Constitutional Convention, coming from all points of the southern sky, make this statement from the heart: Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander tribes were the first sovereign Nations of the Australian continent and its adjacent islands, and possessed it under our own laws and customs. This our ancestors did, according to the reckoning of our culture, from the Creation, according to the common law from ‘time immemorial’, and according to science more than 60,000 years ago. This sovereignty is a spiritual notion: the ancestral tie between the land, or ‘mother nature’, and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who were born therefrom, remain attached thereto, and must one day return thither to be united with our ancestors. This link is the basis of the ownership of the soil, or better, of sovereignty. It has never been ceded or extinguished, and co-exists with the sovereignty of the Crown. How could it be otherwise? That peoples possessed a land for sixty millennia and this sacred link disappears from world history in merely the last two hundred years? With substantive constitutional change and structural reform, we believe this ancient sovereignty can shine through as a fuller expression of Australia’s nationhood. Proportionally, we are the most incarcerated people on the planet. We are not an innately criminal people. Our children are aliened from their families at unprecedented rates. This cannot be because we have no love for them. And our youth languish in detention in obscene numbers. They should be our hope for the future. These dimensions of our crisis tell plainly the structural nature of our problem. This is the torment of our powerlessness. We seek constitutional reforms to empower our people and take a rightful place in our own country. When we have power over our destiny our children will flourish. They will walk in two worlds and their culture will be a gift to their country. We call for the establishment of a First Nations Voice enshrined in the Constitution. Makarrata is the culmination of our agenda: the coming together after a struggle. It captures our aspirations for a fair and truthful relationship with the people of Australia and a better future for our children based on justice and self-determination. We seek a Makarrata Commission to supervise a process of agreement-making between governments and First Nations and truth-telling about our history. In 1967 we were counted, in 2017 we seek to be heard. We leave base camp and start our trek across this vast country. We invite you to walk with us in a movement of the Australian people for a better future. The Forum will be held at 3pm, Saturday 7th December 2019 in the Main Hall at Berry Uniting, 77 Albert Street. Admission price is according to means, from $5 to $25. Tickets from Berry Music Centre or book at: https://www.trybooking.com/BGEFE Any profits go to Waminda, Nowra.

Thirty years ago, Nora McIntosh, Margaret Sharpe, Beverley Brittain-George and Jane Toohey were part of a local committee that formed a branch of the Australian Decorative and Fine Arts Society in our area. Current and past members are indebted to them as their initiative has created many learning and socialising opportunities for people with an interest in the arts. In 2020 there will be a celebration of the fi rst lectures. The Society hosts a series of Thursday evening lectures. The lecturers, from overseas and Australia, are all experts in their fi elds and experienced speakers. NOVEMBER 2019 The Town Crier - Page 21 Back to nature for the Berry Preschool children One More Stop Catching a train to the Sydney the other day I felt I was going somewhere foreign to me. It wasn’t that long ago when the hustle and bustle of city living was all I knew. But now staring out the window I felt a longing for home, where instead of high rises we have trees, instead of a concrete jungle we have open spaces, and instead of factories we have farms. The connection we have here with the farming community is something that doesn’t exist in the city, and the novelty is a long way from wearing off for me. We love that we can get so much produce locally - like ham freshly smoked and olives from Kangaroo Valley, and see the trains pass by that carry the wheat for our local sourdough. Recently at a local farm our kids saw the birth of a calf, and that same week at a church event we were eating beef from that same farm. And most of all we love that we can see the cows that produce our milk as we drive around the area. And this close connection should make us appreciate our farmers all the more, especially in this time of drought. On the south Exploring with binoculars at Bush Kinder coast we have been blessed with recent rain, but Bathurst has now It’s hard to believe we’re already in Term 4 at Berry Preschool! We have gone to stage 6 water restrictions, and Murrurundi in central NSW has a busy term ahead with many of our children preparing to head off completely run out and are trucking in their water. to ‘big school’ next year. They will be participating in school transition I was reading a book with my kids about a boy who wants to say thanks and orientation programs over the term and are very excited about to his mum for his toast. His mum directs him instead to the baker who their adventures next year. baked the bread. The baker sent him off to Dan who drives the delivery In the fi nal weeks of last term, we commenced our Bush Kinder van. Dan sends him off to the miller who grinds the fl our that he loves Program and will continue this throughout Term 4. This program to devour. The miller sent him off to farmer Pete, the one who grows allows children to connect with nature and develop love and respect the wheat. And most people would end the book there. But there is one for nature’s offerings, while helping to enhance their confi dence, more stop. Farmer Pete points out that it is the sun and rain that brings resilience and social and physical skills, as well as their imagination life to the grain. And who is it that sends both? But God in heaven. and engineering abilities. For our fi rst outing we walked to Camp So, it is God we need to thank for all that comes upon our table. And Quality and the children had great fun engaging in creative play in this time of drought it is to Him that we need to pray. God is more without endless resources. Some children enjoyed exploring with their powerful than any of the forces at work in our climate and He loves to binoculars and magnifying glasses and collecting items to make forts shower his mercy on this world. Will you pray that God will send rain on and cubby houses. Others enjoyed the open space and a chance to this drought-ravaged land? explore their surroundings. Simon Chaplin - St Luke’s Anglican This month Berry Preschool joined the ‘Pink Up Your Town’ campaign with the children and staff wearing pink to preschool for gold coin donations. The children also baked cakes which they then sold to families at a cake stall at preschool. All proceeds from these fundraising activities will go to the McGrath Foundation. This year we have been keeping it in the family as we have nine children attending preschool this year whose parents also attended Berry Preschool when they themselves were children! We’re very proud to have been part of the community across the generations and look forward to continuing to do so.

NOVEMBER 2019 The Town Crier - Page 23 In October we held our Slow Fish Sustainability Workshop covering the use of lesser known local seafood and how best to prepare and enjoy them. Pam shared her wealth of knowledge and experience and was previously the Australian Women’s Deep Sea Fishing champion. Amanda compiled information on our local fi shing industry and shared her knowledge with us. The Slow Food International network is preparing to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the historic signing of its founding manifesto with an international campaign that will be a chance not only to remember what has been achieved over the last three decades but also to reaffi rm the importance of continuing to work for the future of food and the planet. Slow Food was founded to defend the right to pleasure and the cultural value of local cuisines, but it has evolved to become one of the leading international actors (and the only acting through food) working to prevent the extinction of thousands of animal breeds and plant varieties. With annual memberships, together we can make food better ... slowly … but surely.
