Caiti Baker, a vocalist and front woman raised on the sounds that birthed popular music, released her debut ZINC on October 6 2017. Born into a household filled with vinyl, CDs and tapes of blues, soul, gospel, jazz, big band and rock & roll, Caiti’s father, a blues musician himself, made sure that she was raised amongst music. Whether it was playing on the stereo, in the car, at a concert or attending week long festivals – music was everywhere.

As a child, Caiti developed a love and appreciation for the pioneering music but was drawn obsessively to Hip Hop, R&B, New Jack Swing and Neo Soul. After being given an 8 track digital recorder, she learnt how to write and record songs on her own from of 12. Inspired by the greats like Aretha Franklin, Big Mamma Thornton, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Etta James and Little Walter; Caiti began to take notes on Missy Elliott, Aaliyah, Destiny’s Child, Lauryn Hill, and Faith Evans.

She got better at writing and singing and formed an electro-soul act with bass player and producer James Mangohig in her early 20s called Sietta. Together they enjoyed a successful career of releasing records (2 EPs and 2 ), touring nationally and internationally as well as receiving regular radio play.

In the later months of 2014, Caiti decided to step out on her own. A catalyst for doing so began with the reunion between Caiti herself and her father after a 4 year falling out. Upon this reunion, Caiti’s father gave her a USB sample bank of his original guitar licks, harmonica ideas and riffs which were recorded on his mobile phone.

Passing the USB key to James Mangohig, who is now an ARIA nominated producer (, ), Caiti and James teamed up with ARIA award winning double bassist and producer Michael Hohnen (Dr G. Yunupingu, Tom E Lewis) to become a production force that no one can mess with. Together, the three of them wrote, honed and recorded songs that would link 2 eras and a plethora of genres together to form a sound that is only unique to Caiti Baker. A sound that will forever evolve based on Caiti’s strong and diverse musical foundation.

In 2015, Caiti signed to Settle Down Records in Darwin. She released her debut single ‘Heavy On My Heart’ in August 2016 to great acclaim and in January 2017, Caiti released her second single ‘Make Your Own Mistakes’. In August 2017, drawing nearer to the completion of her debut album, Caiti released monster jam ‘Wolf’ to many rave reviews. Following it up with the fourth single ‘I Won’t Sleep’, an energetic driving track about regaining her identity after recovering from having Chronic Fatigue Syndrome for 6 years.

In the winter of 2015, she toured with and supported Dr. G Yunupingu on his Gospel Album Tour. Throughout 2016/17, Caiti joined A.B. Original (Briggs and ) as a special guest on tour dates ( Supports, Restrung Tour, St Jerome’s Laneway Festival) and festival gigs. Caiti has been a featured vocalist for A.B. Original and has written and recorded on their 2 x ARIA Award winning debut album ‘Reclaim Australia’. Caiti has also collaborated with acclaimed Hip Hop artists Birdz and Tasman Keith as well as recording some backing vocals for Pete Murray’s album ‘Camacho’. After debuting her music at the Darwin Festival (‘16), Caiti embarked on an extensive headline tour over 4 months down the east coast, followed by 2 support runs with and Son Little (USA) where she was accompanied by celebrated guitarist Lindsay “The Doctor” McDougall.

Throughout 2017, Caiti played renown music festivals Blues Festival and Womad with great acclaim. She supported Australian chart-topper Guy Sebastian and American legend Booker T. Caiti can also be heard and seen featuring on a track with Briggs which was written for the NRL Fox League called ‘Here’.

After the release of her debut album ZINC in October 2017, Caiti signed to MVKA in the UK/EUR. She then spent 10 weeks on the road touring the album’s launch; joining Briggs in attending and performing at the 2017 APRA Screen Music Awards and the NRL’s Dally M Awards and toured with A.B. Original. ZINC received 4 Star reviews from , TheMusic.Com.Au and the Weekend Australian and was Album of The Week on Double J Radio and ABC Darwin. ZINC also came in at number 44 in Double J’s Top 50 Albums of 2017. Caiti was named R&B/Soul artist of the Year in the 4th Annual AU. Awards and has been awarded Best Live Voice of the NT in the 2nd and 3rd National Live Music Awards (NMLAs).

For the majority of 2018, Caiti’s life was spent on the road. She toured the country a number of times, played celebrated summer festivals, supported , traveled to London to perform at the Sounds Australia Aussie BBQ and wound the year up with a tour celebrating her debut album ZINC and three additional songs released throughout Spring (Gimme, Yep Yep and La La La).

2019 sees Caiti back in the studio gearing up for the release of her next musical chapter. Having evolved substantially, Caiti is currently producing, writing and recording her next collection of songs with the collaborative support of James Mangohig and the brother production team SIXFOUR (John and Paul Bartlett) who are also her live touring band.

Caiti writes songs about what she knows and feels, sings with her soul and unashamedly performs the hell out of them. But that will all be obvious when you hear her music and watch her perform, which will have you either dancing or chilling with a grin on your face. “Each piece is “Keep your ear to unique, each the ground – uniquely Caiti Baker is wonderful” damn promising” – Gareth Hipwell, – Liz Giuffre, ROLLING STONE themusic.com.au

DOUBLE J’s 50 best ALBUMS OF 2017

Click Me! Caiti Baker is a genuine one-off, whose startling musicality and originality embraces like a breath of fresh air. After lending her voice to indigenous hip-hoppers AB Original and electro-soulsters Sietta, the dynamic Darwin songstress has taken full ownership of the first album under her own name. Baker’s lush, bluesy voice and left-field phrasing and arranging give her genre-zigzag- ging unmistakeable zip. While the musician’s zest for exploration takes later tracks over the top, Zinc’s opening cuts make high impact. Built on bountiful beats, lusty guitar hooks, swirling keyboard washes and bold brass runs, her songs combine new jack swing and hip-hop with more venerable blues, soul and big band influences. Blending gospel and swing, the ultra-catchy I Won’t Sleep, rhythmically at least, comes across as a Hit the Road Jack for the digital age, with Baker’s edgy lyrics expressing the transformation from youthful angst (“Never knew how lost I thought I could be / Until I wound up with a reflection that wasn’t me”) to a measure of self-assurance (“Haul me back in I’m ready to find my home / Haul me back in I know I’m not alone”). Anxiety re-emerges in Could It Be Nerves, echoed by queries such as: “Why do I feel like this? / Why do the clouds roll in heavy?” A rap influence is inherent in the phrasing Baker employs in the ultra-busy I Got That, to the accompaniment of jazzy horn pushes and a complex drum rhythm. An affiliation with old-school blues underscores her sultry vocals above an organ bed in Believer, with flourishes of harmonica and brass in Over the Horizon.

CAITI BAKER – LIVE AT BYRON BAY BLUES FEST April 2018

Rag N Bone Man isn’t alone in striking a balance between hip hop and blues, Caiti Baker acknowledging the connection between the genres during her Juke Joint set with self-described genre staple “bragging track”, I Got That. Raised on blues music, Baker’s influences are varied but apparent throughout the set, which features most of her debut album, Zinc. Tina Turner’s I Smell Trouble slips into the set and the full-bodied voice of the soul singer from Darwin twists and dips throughout the smaller tent with gospel tones turning into soulful rock. – Bernie Winter & Nada van Kempen, themusic.com.au

CAITI BAKER – LIVE AT BIGSOUND Septemeber 2017

– 10 acts that nailed their BIGSOUND sets – Northern Territory-based Caiti Baker has soul running through her blood and she got BIGSOUND punters grooving with her swing and gospel-influenced tunes. Having guested with the likes of Briggs, Birdz, Pete Murray and Dan Sultan, Baker’s huge voice and huger attitude saw us dancing all night to songs like Make Your Own Mistakes and Heavy On My Heart. – Uppy Chatterjee, Redbull #Music

– Sosefina’s picks: 11 acts who left a lasting impression at BIGSOUND – Big soul vocals were also a huge take away of BIGSOUND 2017 – I love seeing artists embrace their love for a genre so wholly, it really does amplify the quality of a live show. Caiti Baker was a perfect example. We’ve seen her work with Sietta and alongside A.B. ORIGINAL in recent years, but her solo material has the Darwin taking a backflip dive deep into her musical roots of blues, soul and roots music. Her show at the Empire Hotel was one for the books; brilliant fun and dripping in rich vocal talent, Baker turned up to show the crowd how much she’s developed since those early days and for those who have been following her since then, it was an awesome pay off. – Sosefina Fuamoli, The AU Review

...We made sure we were at The Empire Hotel to see Darwin’s Caiti Baker perform and man, she didn’t disappoint. Her vocals have been likened to those of the late Amy Winehouse recently but Baker’s attitude and charm make her stand out all on her own – she’s always been talented but to see her performing her solo material with her band fleshing out the rhythms brilliantly, it’s evident that Baker has found her comfort zone and is relishing it... – Sosefina Fuamoli, The AU Review live reviews

CAITI BAKER – LIVE AT WOMAD The Zoo Stage Friday 10 March 2017

When it came to Baker’s Friday night set on the Zoo Stage, we were introduced to an artist fully flourishing into her own. With a band featuring the talented Zoe Hauptmann, severely underrated duo John and Paul Bartlett (of Lowrider fame) and James Mangohig (Baker’s Sietta partner), the singer had all the elements of a successful live show already in the mix but adding her powerful soul vocal to the formula made for a powerful execution of live music. An exemplary vocal range is Baker’s weapon and man, does she wield it with grace, confidence and charm. – Sosefina Fuamoli, The AU Review

Over at the Zoo Stage I bumped into Matthew Lambert (also known as of the Hilltop Hoods) gettin’ down to Darwin singer-songwriter, Caiti Baker. This was the first time I had heard Caiti Baker live and solo (a few times before with A.B. Original) and she owned the spotlight with a whole lotta soul and groove that you can’t help but move your feet to.

(Appearing with A.B. ORIGINAL) ...Only days prior they took out the as the first Indigenous act to win the prestigious annual prize and they had the likes of Caiti Baker and Dan Sultan on stage to celebrate. The crowd lit up when they saw swag-man Dan Sultan join the stage for a high energy performance of ‘January 26’. However, Caiti Baker’s soaring vocals and fiery stage presence stole the show. If you haven’t seen A.B. Original live yet, I highly recommend you do. – Yewth Mag

Meanwhile, over on the Zoo stage, Darwin singer-songwriter, Caiti Baker was absolutely destroying it with her beautiful vocals and commanding stage presence... Her solo work sees her melding old school blues with hip-hop for a modern take that had the whole crowd grooving and shaking. – amnplify.com.au live reviews

CAITI BAKER – Supporting the Late Dr G Yunupingu on his 2015 National Gospel Album Tour

“On a largely vacant stage, Caiti Baker stands with guitarist Ben Hauptmann and within an instant floors the audience. While Hauptmann plays his road-worn Stratocaster using a series of loop pedals to a great affect, Baker’s phenomenal range and powerhouse vocal feels utterly perfect for the large concert hall acoustics. Splashes of attitude drip through her blues- and soul-inspired tracks and she is at complete ease on stage. Baker performs in a way that you only ever expect to see in the most seasoned of performers. What Am I Supposed To Do?, Silence and Carry all land perfectly with the crowd, and with a full band cover of Tom Waits’ Way Down In The Hole, and a headline act feature for Let It Go, she easily cements her place with the night’s attendees.” – Mark Beresford, themusic.com.au (Perth, 12.8.15)

“The show opened with local South Australian singer/songwriter Caiti Baker accompanied by guitarist Ben Hauptmann. Baker looked very lonely standing in the centre of that large stage, Hauptmann sitting unobtrusively stage right, as she prepared to open this highly anticipated concert virtually alone in front of such a large audience. I was beginning to feel sorry for this isolated performer, and then she sang. Suddenly the stage seemed to shrink as her extraordinary voice and absolute confidence filled it to capacity, Hauptmann’s subtle rhythmic loops and fluent fretwork weaving intricately with the vocals. Her song, Need No Help, evoked the ghost of Amy Winehouse but had such a clearly contemporary edge to it that it defied comparison to other singers. She and Hauptmann were joined by Michael Hohnen, Dr G’s manager and double bass player, for one song and, as she introduced her final offering, she asked the audience for permission to allow “an island boy” to join her on stage. Dr G himself entered the stage to tumultuous applause and Caiti Baker’s status and absolute right to be on that stage was beyond question. She clearly needs no help. The interval allowed me and many others to get a copy of one Baker’s CDs and to eagerly prepare ourselves for the second half.” – Barry Lenny, www.broadwayworld.com (Adelaide, 6.8.15) – amnplify.com.au

“The support act was raised/Darwin-based artist Caiti Baker who, with her gorgeous voice was both smoky and soulful, definitely setting the mood for what was to come. She continued as the backing vocalist for the remainder of the show and was impressive with her range, particularly in Bayini.” – Darren Hassan, www.glamadelaide.com.au (Adelaide, 6.8.15) Awards
