Caiti-Baker-ZINC-EPK-201718.Pdf Caiti Baker, a vocalist and front woman raised on the sounds that birthed popular music, released her debut album ZINC on October 6 2017. Born into a household filled with vinyl, CDs and tapes of blues, soul, gospel, jazz, big band and rock & roll, Caiti’s father, a blues musician himself, made sure that she was raised amongst music. Whether it was playing on the stereo, in the car, at a concert or attending week long festivals – music was everywhere. As a child, Caiti developed a love and appreciation for the pioneering music but was drawn obsessively to Hip Hop, R&B, New Jack Swing and Neo Soul. After being given an 8 track digital recorder, she learnt how to write and record songs on her own from the age of 12. Inspired by the greats like Aretha Franklin, Big Mamma Thornton, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Etta James and Little Walter; Caiti began to take notes on Missy Elliott, Aaliyah, Destiny’s Child, Lauryn Hill, Janet Jackson and Faith Evans. She got better at writing and singing and formed an electro-soul act with bass player and producer James Mangohig in her early 20s called Sietta. Together they enjoyed a successful career of releasing records (2 EPs and 2 albums), touring nationally and internationally as well as receiving regular radio play. In the later months of 2014, Caiti decided to step out on her own. A catalyst for doing so began with the reunion between Caiti herself and her father after a 4 year falling out. Upon this reunion, Caiti’s father gave her a USB sample bank of his original guitar licks, harmonica ideas and riffs which were recorded on his mobile phone. Passing the USB key to James Mangohig, who is now an ARIA nominated producer (Daniel Johns, Briggs), Caiti and James teamed up with ARIA award winning double bassist and producer Michael Hohnen (Dr G. Yunupingu, Tom E Lewis) to become a production force that no one can mess with. Together, the three of them wrote, honed and recorded songs that would link 2 eras and a plethora of genres together to form a sound that is only unique to Caiti Baker. A sound that will forever evolve based on Caiti’s strong and diverse musical foundation. In 2015, Caiti signed to Settle Down Records in Darwin. She released her debut single ‘Heavy On My Heart’ in August 2016 to great acclaim and in January 2017, Caiti released her second single ‘Make Your Own Mistakes’. In August 2017, drawing nearer to the completion of her debut album, Caiti released monster jam ‘Wolf’ to many rave reviews. Following it up with the fourth single ‘I Won’t Sleep’, an energetic driving track about regaining her identity after recovering from having Chronic Fatigue Syndrome for 6 years. In the winter of 2015, she toured with and supported Dr. G Yunupingu on his Gospel Album Tour. Throughout 2016/17, Caiti joined A.B. Original (Briggs and Trials) as a special guest on tour dates (Midnight Oil Supports, Hilltop Hoods Restrung Tour, St Jerome’s Laneway Festival) and festival gigs. Caiti has been a featured vocalist for A.B. Original and has written and recorded on their 2 x ARIA Award winning debut album ‘Reclaim Australia’. Caiti has also collaborated with acclaimed Hip Hop artists Birdz and Tasman Keith as well as recording some backing vocals for Pete Murray’s album ‘Camacho’. After debuting her music at the Darwin Festival (‘16), Caiti embarked on an extensive headline tour over 4 months down the east coast, followed by 2 support runs with Dan Sultan and Son Little (USA) where she was accompanied by celebrated guitarist Lindsay “The Doctor” McDougall. Throughout 2017, Caiti played renown music festivals Byron Bay Blues Festival and Womad with great acclaim. She supported Australian chart-topper Guy Sebastian and American legend Booker T. Caiti can also be heard and seen featuring on a track with Briggs which was written for the NRL Fox League called ‘Here’. After the release of her debut album ZINC in October 2017, Caiti signed to MVKA in the UK/EUR. She then spent 10 weeks on the road touring the album’s launch; joining Briggs in attending and performing at the 2017 APRA Screen Music Awards and the NRL’s Dally M Awards and toured with A.B. Original. ZINC received 4 Star reviews from Rolling Stone, TheMusic.Com.Au and the Weekend Australian and was Album of The Week on Double J Radio and ABC Darwin. ZINC also came in at number 44 in Double J’s Top 50 Albums of 2017. Caiti was named R&B/Soul artist of the Year in the 4th Annual AU. Awards and has been awarded Best Live Voice of the NT in the 2nd and 3rd National Live Music Awards (NMLAs). For the majority of 2018, Caiti’s life was spent on the road. She toured the country a number of times, played celebrated summer festivals, supported The Teskey Brothers, traveled to London to perform at the Sounds Australia Aussie BBQ and wound the year up with a tour celebrating her debut album ZINC and three additional songs released throughout Spring (Gimme, Yep Yep and La La La). 2019 sees Caiti back in the studio gearing up for the release of her next musical chapter. Having evolved substantially, Caiti is currently producing, writing and recording her next collection of songs with the collaborative support of James Mangohig and the brother production team SIXFOUR (John and Paul Bartlett) who are also her live touring band. Caiti writes songs about what she knows and feels, sings with her soul and unashamedly performs the hell out of them. But that will all be obvious when you hear her music and watch her perform, which will have you either dancing or chilling with a grin on your face. “Each piece is “Keep your ear to unique, each the ground – uniquely Caiti Baker is wonderful” damn promising” – Gareth Hipwell, – Liz Giuffre, ROLLING STONE themusic.com.au “Caiti Baker is a genuine one-off, whose startling musicality and originality embraces like a breath of fresh air.” – Tony Hillier, The australian “Baker’s lush, bluesy voice and left-field phrasing and arranging give her genre-zigzagging unmistakeable zip” – The Australian “Baker has a swaggering voice to rival that of Adele”. – Daily Telegraph “Caiti Baker flips between catchy pop, dance and slower blues with this accomplished debut. Praise be for a diversity of style and influence (exploring sounds all in one place is rare these days).” – The Music “One of the 10 most exciting new female voices in Antipodean music today.” – Rolling Stone “Queen Caiti takes us on quite the journey. Dynamic, commanding and a total force.” – triple j Unearthed “Caiti’s voice is as unique as it is powerful, endearing as it is commanding and as beautiful as it is raw.” – Briggs “An exemplary vocal range is Baker’s weapon and man, does she wield it with grace, confidence and charm.” – The AU Review Click Me! Caiti Baker is a genuine one-off, whose startling musicality and originality embraces like a breath of fresh air. After lending her voice to indigenous hip-hoppers AB Original and electro-soulsters Sietta, the dynamic Darwin songstress has taken full ownership of the first album under her own name. Baker’s lush, bluesy voice and left-field phrasing and arranging give her genre-zigzag- ging unmistakeable zip. While the musician’s zest for exploration takes later tracks over the top, Zinc’s opening cuts make high impact. Built on bountiful beats, lusty guitar hooks, swirling keyboard washes and bold brass runs, her songs combine new jack swing and hip-hop with more venerable blues, soul and big band influences. Blending gospel and swing, the ultra-catchy I Won’t Sleep, rhythmically at least, comes across as a Hit the Road Jack for the digital age, with Baker’s edgy lyrics expressing the transformation from youthful angst (“Never knew how lost I thought I could be / Until I wound up with a reflection that wasn’t me”) to a measure of self-assurance (“Haul me back in I’m ready to find my home / Haul me back in I know I’m not alone”). Anxiety re-emerges in Could It Be Nerves, echoed by queries such as: “Why do I feel like this? / Why do the clouds roll in heavy?” A rap influence is inherent in the phrasing Baker employs in the ultra-busy I Got That, to the accompaniment of jazzy horn pushes and a complex drum rhythm. An affiliation with old-school blues underscores her sultry vocals above an organ bed in Believer, with flourishes of harmonica and brass in Over the Horizon. Click Tony Hillier Me! CZECH (Under the Direction of John Weaver) ABSTRACT This project opens space for looking at the world in a musical way where “jamming” with music through playing and listening to it helps one resist a more standardized and dualistic way of seeing the world. Instead of having a traditional dissertation, this project is organized like a record album where each chapter is a Track that contains an original song that parallels and plays off the subject matter being discussed to make a more encompassing, multidimensional, holistic, improvisational, and critical statement as the songs and riffs move along together to tell why an arts-based musical way of being can be a choice and alternative in our lives.

  • “I Rep for My Mob” Blackfellas Rappin' from Down-Unda1 Chiara
“I Rep for My Mob” Blackfellas Rappin’ from Down-Unda1 Chiara Minestrelli In an era of decentering globalizing forces that continuously shift the locale of cultural production and consumption from global markets to local realities and vice versa, music has come to play a crucial role in redefining the value of regional discourses. Hip hop music,2 with its long and solid history of indigenization in different parts of the globe, has provided marginalized and stigmatized communities around the world with accessible “artistic tools” of self-expression. Tony Mitchell (2001), Samy H. Alim, Awad and Pennycook (2009), Sujatha Fernandes (2011) and more recently Christopher Malone and George Martinez (2014), amongst others, have explored the multifaceted and compelling expressivity of “glocal” discourses articulated through hip hop. Many are the local stories of struggle and empowerment that have gained global recognition thanks to the new media. Recent emblematic cases of this movement from the local to the global are well represented by three distinct and yet interrelated cases that testify the power of hip hop as an amplifier for unique stories. The first example is that Sonita Alizadeh, a young Afghani girl who used her personal experience to convey a message of dissent against the issue of child marriage with a hip hop track called “Brides for Sale” (2014). In a similar fashion, with the track “Kodaikanal Won’t” (2015) a young Indian Tamil woman, Sofia Ashraf, launched her protest against the pollution of Kodaikanal (India) caused by the multinational company Unilever. Fitting into a similar “template,” Kylie Sambo, a young Indigenous activist from Australia’s Northern Territory, released the track “Muckaty” (2010),3 where she lamented the Australian govern-ment’s decision to create a nuclear waste dump on Indigenous land.
