0114-01-21 Saying Goodbye to an Old Friend... The Launch of STS 131 On April 5, 2010, at 6:21 a.m. EDT, my wife Peggy and I were privileged to witness one of the last scheduled shuttle flights: Space ShuttleDiscovery (STS-131).

We arrived at Jetty Park in Cocoa Beach, Florida about twelve hours prior to the launch. We spent the night on the jetty pier talking with others of who were anticipating and hoping to witness this moment of history. At six seconds left in the count, we saw the glow bloom in the center of the island. As the countdown reached zero, we saw this magnificent ship, like the legendary phoenix, rise ona plume of fire and began its arc across the morning sky.

As the color of the dawn began filling the sky, the roar of the engines washed over us. As the sound faded, we watched as the boosters separated and the ship became enveloped in a cone of vapor as it raced toward the horizon. A few moments later this new bright star in the morning sky winked out as the engines shut down as it achieved orbit.

As we gathered up our cameras and made our way to the car, we were grateful that all had gone well with the ship, its crew, and our trip. While still filled with the excitement and beauty of what we had witnessed, I was suddenly hit with a sense of loss.

I was born the same year that America’s manned space flight began. Growing up, there have been few periods when there has not been an active, manned American space program. As we began to make our way home, I realized that, in a way, I was saying goodbye to an old friend—one that has been with me my entire life in one form or another…a source of pride and awe that would soon fall silent as this era of America’s manned space program comes to an end and the wait and hope begins for the next giant leap for mankind.

The shuttlepod was originally designed to be in five pieces–2 engines, a pair of connecting cross beams for the engines, main body, and the cockpit. It was decided to leave the cockpit secured to the body to make set up easier. With a trailer and a pick up truck, the shuttlepod made its journey to the movie theater.

Seen in Star Trek (2009), for example the opening young Jim Kirk sequence, says only “Iowa.” But local Riverside residents readily picked out the familiar landmarks...despite the fact that the filming took place in Central California.

Rumor had it that the production crew did have scouts do a reconnaissance of Northern Washington County, IA, to “pinpoint” the sites. The Iowa scenes, ironically, actually were filmed for convenience largely in The San Joaquin Valley in California. But it was Captain Pike who said “meet me at the Riverside Shipyards” to the beaten-up Jim Kirk at the bar. That put Riverside on the map once and for all.

The Riverside Shipyards were located to the west of the City of Riverside...And surprisingly, not the city that exists today. The town footprint of the current Riverside is actually Kirk’s birthplace, the “REAL” site of the Kirk farm—in the Prime (Original Series) universe.

Gillian Taylor asks Kirk if he was from outer space. He replies, “No, I’m from Iowa; I only work in outer space.”

Miller wanted Kirk to “hail” from their hometown, Riverside. The proclamation was approved, and a letter petitioning Gene Roddenberry and Paramount Pictures was duly sent to Hollywood. Gene Roddenberry was so impressed, he wrote back, saying in his response, “As far as I am concerned, the first who asks is the first who gets.” With Mr. Roddenberry’s endorsement and Paramount’s tacit approval, Riverside began to promote itself as the town “Where the Trek Begins” and “The Future Birthplace of Capt. James T. Kirk.” In 2006, JJ Abrams began production on a reboot of the Star Tr e k franchise, now in the hands of CBS Studios and Paramount Pictures.

In Star Trek (2009), Captain Christopher Pike tells the hooligan who had just been beaten in the shipyard bar, young James Kirk, to “…meet me at the Riverside

Page 19 He is shown traveling away from the dawn, west...and the double city high-rises are seen on his left as Jim Kirk travels through the misty farm fields. Kirk rides over a hill, to the shipyards. Since the city high-rises are on his left—the same city high-rises that were shown behind the then-young Jim Kirk in his Corvette chase—that city lies just to the south of the Kirk farm. This great big building is the 23rd Century City of Riverside, population roughly 35-50,000. Just a li’l country town…

This theory is supported from Star Trek: Voyager, in the episode “11:59”, where an ancestor of Kathryn Janeway, builds the first of many such “enclosed environments”—the city high-rises—near her own future home in Indiana—circa 2000. So, not a stretch at all to put the City of Riverside in a big building, just southeast of Kirk’s homestead.

Further proof that the shipyards are west of the City of Riverside and the Kirk farm, is what we call the “Big Scene”… Washington, DC. By the 23rd Century, Riverside is a quiet first road, turning east to wave at his buddy. Then the Air- country burb of the Quad Cities Metroplex—similar to how Cop (cyborg, whatever he is) tells him to pull over—which Q) What is the “Big Scene” in Star Trek (2009)? It happens to lie just 13 miles north of of either Thelma & Louise or the Wile E Coyote cartoons, off goes the ‘Vette to oblivion, and Kirk into custody. The Riverside Quarry is so-name simply because the operations went so large—putting up those nearby city high-rises— that the current Coralville operation dug itself south, to just northeast of where the current Riverside, and the future Kirk farm, each lie.

Whew!

Hope that helps to answer some of those lingering questions. Riverside is very happy and proud to be the hometown “Where the Trek Begins.” The USS Riverside and her Lobo Flight Crew are here to answer these great questions, and to promote the wonderful small town in Iowa that thinks for the future.

We encourage all those interested to become part of Riverside’s Trek Fest, held on the last weekend of June annually. If you’re in Eastern Iowa, you can join the USS Riverside NCC-1660 and STARFLEET. Check Trek Fest out at < http://www.trekfest.com >. Check out also last year’s that big city high-rise,, and is just south of Kirk’s farm, then the current City of Riverside. And Murphy’s owner, Jerry Murphy himself, would be happy to show you the “special monument” marking the Bar’s significance in the (original) Kirk’s existence.

And those many city lights sitting on the eastern horizon? Well, those happen to be the city lights of the Quad Cities, grown by the 23rd Century, to encompass Iowa City and Muscatine, in Iowa, and other towns back into Illinois. This type of city growth is very familiar to anyone who has traveled through the “eastern corridor” from Boston to

Because I was unable Deep Space Nine 58.3 27.8 11. 1 0 0 0 2.8 to create this option, I saw little point in stressing that the survey was aimed at people in the UK when circulating it. Therefore, Next Generation Cast Movies 47.2 33.3 11. 1 5.6 0 0 2.8 you will see that the majority of answers come from outside the Voyager 30.6 41.7 11. 1 8.3 2.8 2.8 2.8 UK (and, I would wager, inside the US). Page 34 STARFLEET MEMBERS TRY FOR THE WORlD RECORD

On May 1st, Star Trek fans At Vulcan Con in Tampa, Florida attempted to break the world record for most people gathered in Star Trek costumes. The previous record was set back in February in London with 99 costumed fans showing up.

The organizers of Vulcan Con were certain they could break that record...and they did, with 110 fans showing up in costume, including the following STARFLEET MEMBERS: ADM Dave Ryan and RADM Leslie Ryan (USS Marathon), FCPT Ralph PlantHold (USS Gasparilla), Captain Alvin Dozier (USS Judah), VADM Freddy Heller (USS Da ViNci), and CAPT Rich Graham (USS Khai Tam).

Unfortunately, Tampa was not the only location trying for a new record that day. An Ocean away in Bonn, Germany, fans attending the massive Fedcon convention were making their own attempt at the record. By the end of the day, the European fans proved too much for their American competition, and a new record of 507 fans in costume was set. 0737-34-756 Happy 7th Birthday, USS Niagara! The USS Niagara celebrated its seven-year anniversary Saturday, March 27 with a dinner held at the Imperial Chinese Restaurant in Depew, New York.

This buffet-style dinner was attended by numerous crewmembers as well as several special guests. Those guests included VADM Dave Blaser (Vice Commander, STARFLEET), as well as FCPT Debbie Blaser, and CAPT Shirley Graham, all from the SS Bounty, Region 13.

Admiral Blaser gave some quick announcements, stating that the organization’s membership had reached 4,200 members and that STARFLEET elections would be starting in June. A drawing was also held for two $25 KwikFill gas cards. They were won by LT Carol Courtney and CAPT Darlene Topp.

The crew of the Niagara has grown over the years to more than 30 members, spread across numerous states, several countries, as well as several continents.

While the ship and its crew have evolved and changed over the years—most recently from a Meeting Chapter to a Correspondence Chapter—what has remained constant is the Niagara’s dedication to supporting local charities.

Through the ongoing efforts of the crew, the Niagara routinely supports such local RADM Glen Diebold (standing), the Niagara’s charities as the Food Bank of WNY and the Father Baker Orphanage.
