  • Exhibition Press Release Kenneth Anger
EXHIBITION PRESS RELEASE KENNETH ANGER February 22 through September 14, 2009. Opening Day Celebration: February 22, 2009, 12-6 PM. (Long Island City, NY — February 9, 2009) P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center presents Kenneth Anger, the first major survey of the filmmaker’s body of work at a U.S. museum in over a decade. Making films since 1947, Anger is considered internationally as a pioneering and influential force in avant- garde cinema. His ground breaking films have inspired the likes of Martin Scorsese, Gus Van Sant, and Guy Maddin. The exhibition will focus primarily on Anger’s early iconic works including Fireworks (1947), Puce Moment (1949), Eaux D’Artifice (1953), Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome (1954 – 66), Scorpio Rising (1963), Kustom Kar Kommandos (1964 – 65), Invocation of my Demon Brother (1969) and Lucifer Rising (1970 – 81). The exhibition is presented in the 2nd floor Kunsthalle. Kenneth Anger’s work constitutes a radical critique of Hollywood, often evoking and referencing pop icons within occult settings and depicting youth counterculture in the midst of violence and eroticism. Anger does not use a narrative-based style, but rather lyrically explores themes of ritualistic transformation and transfiguration. His films are imbued with a baroque splendor stemming from the heightened sensuality of his opulent colors and imagery. They are often accompanied by a haunting soundtrack, composed by renowned musicians such as Mick Jagger and Bobby Beausoleil. The exhibition design, consisting primarily of red and silver vinyl partitions and wall and floor coverings, is evocative of the atmosphere of Anger’s films. It extends the sumptuous settings that are depicted on screen into the exhibition space, creating an immersive viewing experience.

LRuecsiefaerrc hO Pvaepre rLsuxor: Archaeology, Egyptology, and Occultism in Kenneth Anger's Magick Lantern Cycle Lucifer Over Luxor: Archaeology Egyptology and Occultism in Kenneth Anger’s Magick Lantern Cycle Authors: {'first_name': 'Ethan', 'last_name': 'Doyle White'} Abstract One of the great figureheads of American experimental cinema, Kenneth Anger (b.1927), is internationally renowned for his pioneering work, recognisable for its blend of homoerotica, popular and classical music, and dark, symbolist imagery. A follower of Thelema, the religion of infamous British occultist Aleister Crowley (1875–1947), Anger’s work is imbued with occult themes and undercurrents rarely comprehensible to the non-initiated viewer. In exploring these esoteric ideas, Anger makes use of archaeology and heritage in his short films Eaux d’Artifice (1953) and Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome (1954–66), as well as in the lost films The Love That Whirls (1949) and Thelema Abbey (1955), which utilize such disparate elements as Aztec human sacrifice and putative Renaissance Satanism. However, this theme only reaches its apex in Lucifer Rising (1980), an exploration of Thelemic theology filmed at such sites as Avebury, Luxor, and Karnak, which reflects and propagates the Thelemic view of the past—an ‘alternative archaeology’ rooted in Crowley’s own fascination with Egyptomania. This paper seeks to explore Anger’s use of the past and place it in its proper context of twentieth-century Western esotericism. Keywords: Article has no keywords DOI: http://doi.org/10.5334/pp.73 Kenneth Anger (b.1927) is one of the foremost figures of American experimental cinema, an artist who produced groundbreaking work in the field over a thirty-three year period from 1947 to 1980.

Anger, Kenneth (b.1927) by Mark Allen Svede Kenneth Anger (ca Encyclopedia Copyright © 2015, glbtq, Inc. 2006). Entry Copyright © 2002, glbtq, Inc. This image is a detail Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com from a still from the video Anger Me (2006). One of America's first openly gay filmmakers, and certainly the first whose work addressed homosexuality in an undisguised, self-implicating manner, Kenneth Anger occupies an important place in the history of experimental filmmaking. His role in rendering gay culture visible within American cinema, commercial or otherwise, is impossible to overestimate. He was born Kenneth Anglemyer on February 3, 1927 in Santa Monica, California, but as a youngster renamed himself as part of his aggressive self-fashioning. A child actor, he was exposed to cinematic artifice early in his life and gained a precocious familiarity with films by masters such as Eisenstein. This exposure and familiarity informed the production values and narrative complexity of the short films Anger made as a teenager. In 1947, Anger gained instant notoriety with Fireworks, a homoerotic nightmare/reverie in which a muscle- bound sailor enjoys posing for the protagonist's (Anger's) delectation, but then, with four others, bashes the youth in a public restroom. Despite the horrific scenario, the ending suggests redemption with milky fluid spattering Anger's body, a sympathetic sailor's crotch spewing white sparks from a Roman candle, and Anger resurrected, wearing a flaming Christmas tree headdress. Encapsulated thus, Fireworks is deprived of its visual subtleties, irony, and sophisticated editing, which were precisely the qualities that exonerated it in a 1959 obscenity trial before California's Supreme Court after years of censorship and controversy, sometimes even when shown in European avant-garde film festivals.
