As Dave Van Ronk points out in his quote from Merry Prankster Wavy Gravy (Hugh Romney), memories of those times tend to be hazy. On the other hand, research on memory has shown that there is a “reminiscence bump,” that is “people tend to remember disproportionately more events from the period between their adolescence and early adulthood” (Foster 64). In any case, it is clear that memory, whether it is individual and collective, reconstructs past experience, and that my own experience of the era has inevitably flavored the content of this article, making it impossible to aspire completely to the traditional ideals of scholarly distance and detachment. Future generations of cultural analysts will no doubt reassess the Woodstock Years through different lenses. The name “Laura Nyro” may not ring a bell for many readers, as it did not for many of my students, colleagues and friends whom I have informally surveyed. This is understandable since, unlike other singer-songwriter icons of the period (e.g., Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor), Nyro was never really in the mainstream, although her songs have often been covered by a broad spectrum of singers and bands in a remarkable variety of musical styles, sometimes achieving a fair amount of commercial success.

    I’M NOT THERE (1956-2007) Stephen Scobie Je est un autre—Arthur Rimbaud I’m Not There (2007) In this autumn season of 2007, I can see that I am going to be thinking a lot about the Bob Dylan song known as “I’m Not There (1956).” At least, that is the title given to it on most of its early, bootleg appearances. Now that it has finally been officially released, the sub-title date has been dropped—which is a pity (since it added an element of mystery to the song) but also understandable (since no good explanation of the date has ever been given). “I’m Not There” is perhaps the ultimate Dylan bootleg, and has always been a subject for cult idealization as the most obscure of Dylan’s “lost” songs: a major master- piece that almost no one knows, and which indeed seems to conspire actively against being known. Now, it has become the title of Todd Haynes’s movie I’m Not There, “inspired by the music and many lives of Bob Dylan”—“many” being the operative word. The film is already famous for casting six different actors to play aspects of Dylan at different points in his career. If this strategy is a gimmick, it is a successful one: the film is generating vast amounts of advance publicity, much of it based on the photographs of Cate Blanchett looking, uncannily and androgynously, like 1966 Bob. The film is not due for North American release until late November, though it has played in prestigious festivals like Toronto, New York, and Venice.

MAHER OVERVIEW Lossless data compression of digital audio signals is useful when it is necessary to minimize the storage space or transmission bandwidth of audio data while still maintaining archival quality. Available techniques for lossless audio compression, or lossless audio packing, generally employ an adaptive waveform predictor with a variable-rate entropy coding of the residual, such as Huffman or Golomb-Rice coding. The amount of data compression can vary considerably from one audio waveform to another, but ratios of less than 3 are typical. Several freeware, shareware, and proprietary commercial lossless audio packing programs are available. 12.1 INTRODUCTION The Internet is increasingly being used as a means to deliver audio content to end-users for en­ tertainment, education, and commerce. It is clearly advantageous to minimize the time required to download an audio data file and the storage capacity required to hold it. Moreover, the expec­ tations of end-users with regard to signal quality, number of audio channels, meta-data such as song lyrics, and similar additional features provide incentives to compress the audio data. 12.1.1 Background In the past decade there have been significant breakthroughs in audio data compression using lossy perceptual coding [1]. Popp Fraunhofer Institut für Integrierte Schaltungen (IIS) MPEG Layer-3, otherwise known as MP3, has generated a phenomenal interest among Internet users, or at least among those who want to download highly-compressed digital audio files at near-CD quality. This article provides an introduction to the work of the MPEG group which was, and still is, responsible for bringing this open (i.e. non-proprietary) compression standard to the forefront of Internet audio downloads. 1. Introduction The audio coding scheme MPEG Layer-3 will soon celebrate its 10th birthday, having been standardized in 1991. In its first years, the scheme was mainly used within DSP- based codecs for studio applications, allowing professionals to use ISDN phone lines as cost-effective music links with high sound quality. In 1995, MPEG Layer-3 was selected as the audio format for the digital satellite broadcasting system developed by World- Space. This was its first step into the mass market. Its second step soon followed, due to the use of the Internet for the electronic distribution of music. Here, the proliferation of audio material – coded with MPEG Layer-3 (aka MP3) – has shown an exponential growth since 1995.     Hipster Black Metal? Deafheaven’s Sunbather and the Evolution of an (Un) popular Genre Paola Ferrero A couple of months ago a guy walks into a bar in Brooklyn and strikes up a conversation with the bartenders about heavy metal. The guy happens to mention that Deafheaven, an up-and-coming American black metal (BM) band, is going to perform at Saint Vitus, the local metal concert venue, in a couple of weeks. The bartenders immediately become confrontational, denying Deafheaven the BM ‘label of authenticity’: the band, according to them, plays ‘hipster metal’ and their singer, George Clarke, clearly sports a hipster hairstyle. Good thing they probably did not know who they were talking to: the ‘guy’ in our story is, in fact, Jonah Bayer, a contributor to Noisey, the music magazine of Vice, considered to be one of the bastions of hipster online culture. The product of that conversation, a piece entitled ‘Why are black metal fans such elitist assholes?’ was almost certainly intended as a humorous nod to the ongoing debate, generated mainly by music webzines and their readers, over Deafheaven’s inclusion in the BM canon. The article features a promo picture of the band, two young, clean- shaven guys, wearing indistinct clothing, with short haircuts and mild, neutral facial expressions, their faces made to look like they were ironically wearing black and white make up, the typical ‘corpse-paint’ of traditional, early BM. It certainly did not help that Bayer also included a picture of Inquisition, a historical BM band from Colombia formed in the early 1990s, and ridiculed their corpse-paint and black cloaks attire with the following caption: ‘Here’s what you’re defending, black metal purists.
