Soldier, Swordsman, Horseman, LoverBy Bob JacksonConan Doylersquo;s tales of Brigadier Etienne Gerard were originally published in the ldquo;Strand Magazinerdquo; between December 1894 and September 1903, and were later issued in two volumes: ldquo; The Exploits of Brigadier Gerardrdquo; in February 1896 and ldquo; The Adventures of Gerardrdquo; in September 1903. This is a review of the first of these volumes. For most of the stories, Brigadier Gerard, an old officer retired from the Grand Army of Bonaparte, is retelling memorable exploits of his life in service of his country and his Emperor. The location is in France or in surrounding, occupied territory; and the time is roughly the first decade of the 19th century, with the narrator describing the event from his vantage of approximately 30-40 years later. With much luck, and by virtue of his bravery, determination and skills (but not necessarily intelligence) Gerard rose quickly through the military ranks from a young Hussar officer to the rank of colonel at twenty-eight and the chief of a brigade at thirty-one. Throughout much of his military career, Gerard occasionally served as Napoleonrsquo;s personal agent reporting directly to the Emperor for certain of his orders. Prior to his first meeting with Napoleon, young Lieutenant Gerardrsquo;s commanding officer described the lieutenant to Napoleon as ldquo;all spurs and moustaches, with never a thought beyond women and horses.rdquo; Napoleon responds, ldquo; That is the man I want. Bring him to my private cabinet.rdquo; Several years and many exploits later, Napoleon describes then-Brigadier Gerard as having ldquo;the thickest head hellip; but the stoutest heart in my army.rdquo; This is a collection of eight separate stories, with Etienne Gerard being the narrator and the main character in them all. Gerard, both in his youth and in older age, is convinced that he was one of the greatest soldiers, most skilled swordsman, most accomplished horseman, and most gallant lovers in all of France; and he "modestly" credits himself as such in his narrations. In many ways, Gerardrsquo;s assessment of himself is not wrong; and it is always strong enough to quickly pass over considerations of setbacks that might have caused a person with lesser ego and more self-awareness to rethink his real position in the world. I would not call these stories ldquo;historical fictionrdquo; so much as I would describe them light, humorous, and well-written adventure stories in a historical setting. The author undoubtedly presents the historical characters, Napoleon, Talleyrand, General Lasalle and others, in a somewhat realistic way; but with exaggerations or embellishments suitable to the stories, as seen through the naiuml;ve eyes of the narrator. I enjoyed these stories and recommend them as very pleasant reading.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Fun but flawed.By Michael J. MorrisThis was a pretty fun read. Brigadier Gerard is an entertainingly boastful, yet heroic and perfectly able military officer, although not too bright. There's a little bit of historical insight here into Napoleon's empire, there's humour, daring do, and exciting action. Doyle really goes against the intellectual superman trope he created with and revels in the creation of the dumb but lucky Gerard who's abilities are purely physical. The main faults of the work are historical inaccuracies ("brigadier" low, non-commissioned rank in the French army), and some of the more actioned centred stories are too low on detail and the style is very bare, leading to a "cardboard cut out" type of feel to them.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Very fun read and a great main characterBy JetpackThis is a review of the free Kindle edition. Total Kindle locations is 2,625.Brigadier Gerard is a retired French cavalry officer, and he relates several of his exploits in this collection. Gerard is a larger than life character, who never overstates his skill or ability. As a former officer of Napoleon, Gerard has great stories of Spain, England, Germany and France. Gerard is a classic chivalric figure, who's honor and duty guide him. That and a pretty girl.Great read of turn of the Napoleonic age.

The Exploits of Brigadier Gerard the history

About the AuthorThe creator of Sherlock Holmes, the world's most famous literary detective. Born in Scotland, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a practising doctor when he began to write tales of mystery and adventure. In addition to the Sherlock Holmes stories, Conan Doyle also wrote the adventures, and his classic, The Lost World, is one of the original fantasy novels. Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was born in Edinburgh and studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh's Medical School. Graduating in 1881, he set up practice as an occultist, but as patients proved elusive he turned to writing. An important influence upon his literary career was his professor, Dr Joseph Bell, who could observe the most minute detail regarding a patient's condition. This master of deduction became the model for Conan Doyle's legendary literary creation, the detective Sherlock Holmes, introduced in lsquo;A Study in Scarletrsquo; in 1887. Conan Doyle also espoused and devoted considerable time and effort to a campaign of support for this cause. He also wrote successfully in genres other than detective fiction. His non-fiction includes military writing on the Boer War and pamphlets on spiritualism. It is known that he felt constricted at times by the popularity of Holmes, but it is nevertheless for Sherlock Holmes and his foil, the ponderous Dr Watson that he is best remembered. As Sherlock Holmes was the first detective to solve cases by deduction rather than due to an error by the criminal, Conan Doyle can be credited with creating the modern detective novel. He was knighted in 1902 for his support of the British cause in the Boer Wars. After the death of his son in the First World War, he devoted the rest of his life to spiritualism on which he wrote and lectured. From AudioFileConan Doyle originally published the humorous stories in this 1896 anthology in "Strand" magazine, where Sherlock Holmes had long comfortably dwelled. These are the first-person war stories of Etienne Gerard, a dandyish, opinionated, conceited, randy, dull-witted, and fearless officer in Napoleon's army. In the canon of satirical military figures Gerard stands (at attention, of course) squarely between Baron Munchausen and the Good Soldier Schweik. Militarism, English boorishness, and French arrogance get the worst from Conan Doyle here. His humor seems to escape narrator Rupert Degas, who exhibits plenty of vigor but little comic finesse. He plays Gerard with a French accent and fully voices the other characters, playing the various accents convincingly while skimping on characterization. A handsome and informative pamphlet accompanies the CD edition. Y.R. copy; AudioFile 2010, Portland, Maine
