A FAMILY NAMED GRESHAM By Virgil L Gresham Compiled 1976-1977 DEDICATED To My Wife Florabelle Ruth (Baker) Gresham CONTENTS Introduction 7 Early Greshams in England 10 The Gresham Family 11 Wills and Estates 212 Miscellany 223 Lineages 227 Bibliography 229 Additions to Lineage 230 Index 232 INTRODUCTION In this our Bicentennial year as we pause to reflect upon our nation's history, it seems appropriate to remember those who made our country great - the people - families like ours. With this idea in mind, this book was -written. Shortly after the Battle of Hastings in 1066, when William of Normandy, known as William the Conqueror, defeated King Harold of England, many of the people of Normandy crossed over into conquered England. Among those was one Edward De Gresse and his son Edward. Edward, the elder, was with William at the Battle of Hastings. After the De Gresse's became citizens of England, the French prefix ''De" was dropped and to distinguish them as land owners, the "ham" was added. Under this modified name, a Coat of Arms, which distinguished and dignified the family for many generations, was conferred upon them. The Coat of Arms consisted of a grasshopper on a green sword, "Gres" meaning green and the hopper indicating the activity of the family in their devotion to the King. Its use, as shown by records, is tpe evidence that the Greshams are the descendants of the De Gresse's. A golden grasshopper can be found atop the Royal Exchange in London, in memory and honor of its founder, Sir Thomas Gresham. During the twelfth century, Edward Gresham, presumably a descendant of the De Gresse's, founded the town of Gresham in Nor folk Co, England. From this Edward, the Gresham family is traced to Surrey Co, to London and thence to America. It is the aim of this book to present, in as clear a manner as possible, _the record of the Gresham family in England and the New World and their pioneer spirit as they moved westward through the new land. Because of the passing of time and the ravages of wars, these records must, of necessity, be incomplete. This volume will record only one branch of this large and interesting family. Others, Mrs. W. H. Bagwell, Alexander Taylor Strange and Thomas Gresham, have published books on other branches. It is hoped that this book gives much pleasure and enjoyment to those who read and study it. As in most works of this nature, many facts have been omitted, but we believe that the facts as presented are authentic. Any errors that appear are purely errors on the part of the author and we are truly sorry for them. To everyone who assisted in the task of compiling this family history, we extend a grateful "Thank You." 7 We want to especially thank the following for their many con tributions; W.R.
