DOCUMENT RESUME ED 424 499 CG 028 776 AUTHOR Diefenbach, Donald L.; Burns, Naomi J.; Schwartz, Alan L. TITLE Mental Health Professionals According to Prime-Time: An Exploratory Analysis. PUB DATE 1998-08-00 NOTE 15p.; Paper presented at the American Psychological Association Annual Convention (106th, San Francisco, CA, August 14-18, 1998). PUB TYPE Reports Research (143)-- Speeches/Meeting Papers (150) EDRS PRICE MF01/PC01 Plus Postage. DESCRIPTORS *Broadcast Television; *Mass Media Effects; Media Research; Mental Health Workers; Television Research IDENTIFIERS *Prime Time Television ABSTRACT The public receives a large percentage of its information about mental health issues from media sources. Research has shown that the portrayal of occupational roles is often distorted and unrealistic. Cultivation theory predicts that television's version of reality helps influence or "cultivate" viewers' beliefs about the world. This cultivation might influence a person's expectations or behavior during an encounter with these professionals, or even influence viewers' decisions to consult these professionals when in need of service. Research for this paper employed mixed methods to explore how mental health professionals are portrayed on television. Analysis of characters involved a random sample across all genres of programming. Trained coders (n=9) identified 10 out of 1,844 speaking characters as mental health professionals. Descriptive statistics are reported on the characters. A content analysis by type of programming-is presented and discussed. Exploratory analysis examining the portrayal of mental health professionals on prime-time television indicates that portrayals can not be classified by tone in a single category; however tone appears to be consistent within certain programming genres.

For attorneys, that’s no different – even when they’re watching lawyers on TV. “Better Call Saul” is the latest in a long line of TV shows about the legal profession. A prequel to AMC’s “Breaking Bad,” the show stars Bob Odenkirk as a crooked-at-times attorney named Jimmy McGill. “He’s a likable guy and you like his character,” said Patrick Fitzsimmons, senior associate at Hodgson Russ LLP in Buffalo. “It’s a great show. I think it’s the one BEN LEUNER/AMC show compared to the others where it’s not about a big firm.” “Better Call Saul” puts a new spin on legal drama as the slippery Jimmy McGill (played by Bob Odenkirk) Also a fan is Michael Benz, an associate at HoganWillig who recently returned to builds his practice. his native Buffalo after working in the Philadelphia public defender’s office and in his own practice as a criminal defense attorney. “(Odenkirk’s character is) the classic defense attorney who will do anything to make a buck or help his client,” Benz said, adding that he often binge-watches shows with his wife, Carla, an attorney in the federal public defender’s office in Buffalo.

  • The Dismal Science the Irrational 18-Year-Old Criminal by Joel
Print the dismal science The Irrational 18-Year-Old Criminal Evidence that prison doesn't deter crime. By Joel Waldfogel Posted Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2007, at 4:54 PM ET Crime control is one of the oldest problems facing social science, dating at least to Beccaria, the 18th- century Italian philosopher who tried to put punishment on a rational footing. Two basic tools for controlling crime are policing and imprisonment, corresponding broadly to the first and second half- hours of a Law & Order episode. (In the vintage cast lineup, Detective Lennie Briscoe identifies a prime suspect before the second commercial break, and then prosecutor Jack McCoy does battle in court to get the defendant prison time.) Both the prospect of getting caught and the prospect of spending time in prison are supposed to deter forward-looking, rational potential offenders from criminal activity, encouraging more-constructive pursuits like staying in school or at least making French fries. More mechanically, prison also prevents crime by simply caging dangerous people. Deterrence has long been an article of faith among economic theorists and, more recently, economists who do empirical work, too. But now a series of careful studies by economists at Columbia and the University of Michigan are calling into question whether either policing or punishment successfully deters crime. With the traditional tools of social science, the deterrent effect of policing and punishment is hard to measure. Usually, empiricists infer an effect if crime is lower in circumstances with stiffer punishments or more policing. The problem is that tougher policies don't occur randomly.

Mueller* ABSTRACT Plea bargaining is the dominant means of disposing of criminal charges in the United States, in both state and federal courts. This administrative mechanism has become a system that is grossly abusive of individual rights, leading to many well-known maladies of the criminal justice system, which include overcharging, overincarceration, convictions on charges that would likely fail at trial, and even conviction of “factually innocent” persons.

  • Law and Order and the American Criminal Justice System
Law and Order and the American Criminal Justice System By David L. Sutton, Melissa Britts, Margaret Landman Fall 2000 Issue of KINEMA TELEVISION PROGRAMMES AS LEGAL TEXTS: WHAT LAW AND ORDER TELLS US ABOUT THE AMERICAN CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM In this work, we take the perspective that although a television program is produced for the brief amusement of a mass audience, it can be viewed as having a part in the scholarly investigation of law and justice in our society. The central question we are focussing on is: What does Law & Order programme tell its audience about the American criminal justice system? According to one of the program’s official web sites, Law & Order is a ”realistic” television series that examines ”law and order from a dual perspective.” For roughly the first half-hour, the program focuses on two New York Police Department (NYPD) detectives as they ”investigate crimes and apprehend law-breakers.” Then the scene switches to the criminal courts, where two assistant district attorneys ”work within a complicated justice system to prosecute the criminals.”(1) We take the position that a television program can be examined as a legal text. John Denvir posits that films can be studied as legal texts because they share a common feature with the ”normal legaltrilogyof constitutions, codes, and cases.” Like this group of texts, films are also ”cultural artifacts open to warring interpretations both on the descriptive and normative level.”(2) We posit that one can easily make the same point about television programs, another prevalent cultural artifact of our current times.
