Gatson Committee Members, Holly Foster Antonio La Pastina Head of Department, Mark Fossett May 2008 Major Subject: Sociology iii ABSTRACT Media Representation of Maternal Neonaticide. (May 2008) Jocelyn Renee Lewis, B.S., Texas A&M University Chair of Advisory Committee: Dr. Sarah N. Gatson The present research conducted a rich discourse analysis of an episode of the fictional television crime drama, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, as well as a content analysis of local and national news transcripts focusing on the representation of mothers who commit neonaticide. Both fictional and non-fictional media sources exhibited aspects of the monstrous maternal theme and the strain defense theme. The monstrous maternal theme consists of words and statements that indicate the descriptions of crime committed against the newborn as well as negative responses and reactions by others to the young mother and her crime. The strain defense theme refers to instances that discuss the internal and external strains of the young woman that may have contributed to her committing neonaticide. However, the “monstrous maternal” is the prevailing representation of mothers who commit neonaticide in both fictional and non- fictional media sources. -

As their relationship grows, he begins to question her secretive past, which he discovers is linked to a series of murders that the police are investigating. Written by Anonymous. He tried to commit suicide. Afterwards they make love on board the train. A classy prostitute, calling herself Kiss and Die Eyes", shoots her customers to death. Her face is not seen, so the question is whether the woman on the Train and "Bedroom Eyes" are the same person. I am not really a fan of romantic films. I can reveal so much that Rogers' character suffers from multiple personality disorder. She has been abused by her father as a little girl. The film had been better if her Kiss and Die personalities had been the opposites of each other. Her "normal" personality is also unchaste She makes love on a train with a stranger she just met. This weakens the story. Tippi Hedren's character in "Marnie" was frigid. Joanne Woodward's characters in "The Three Faces of Eve" were different, only one of them was flirtatious. I don't know why the script writer decided to make her two personalities so similar. -
The Dismal Science the Irrational 18-Year-Old Criminal by Joel
Print the dismal science The Irrational 18-Year-Old Criminal Evidence that prison doesn't deter crime. By Joel Waldfogel Posted Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2007, at 4:54 PM ET Crime control is one of the oldest problems facing social science, dating at least to Beccaria, the 18th- century Italian philosopher who tried to put punishment on a rational footing. Two basic tools for controlling crime are policing and imprisonment, corresponding broadly to the first and second half- hours of a Law & Order episode. (In the vintage cast lineup, Detective Lennie Briscoe identifies a prime suspect before the second commercial break, and then prosecutor Jack McCoy does battle in court to get the defendant prison time.) Both the prospect of getting caught and the prospect of spending time in prison are supposed to deter forward-looking, rational potential offenders from criminal activity, encouraging more-constructive pursuits like staying in school or at least making French fries. More mechanically, prison also prevents crime by simply caging dangerous people. Deterrence has long been an article of faith among economic theorists and, more recently, economists who do empirical work, too. But now a series of careful studies by economists at Columbia and the University of Michigan are calling into question whether either policing or punishment successfully deters crime. With the traditional tools of social science, the deterrent effect of policing and punishment is hard to measure. Usually, empiricists infer an effect if crime is lower in circumstances with stiffer punishments or more policing. The problem is that tougher policies don't occur randomly. -

These are their stories. So begins each episode ofLaw & Order, NBC's long running police and legal television drama. What follows this solemn incantation is an hour-long investigation ofthe concepts ofcrime and justice, which both police and lawyers are struggling not just to achieve but to define. The premise of I Law & Order is simple, and the same structure underlies almost every episode: in the first half the detectives investigate a crime and eventually apprehend their suspect, after which the plot moves to criminal court, where the district attorneys juggle the legal system to try and convict the accused. Yet despite the formulaic nature ofthe program, its continued popularity is impressive; now in its thirteenth season, Law & Order has been renewed through May 2005, which will make it televisiol1'S longest running police series and second-longest running dramatic series. -

Mueller* ABSTRACT Plea bargaining is the dominant means of disposing of criminal charges in the United States, in both state and federal courts. This administrative mechanism has become a system that is grossly abusive of individual rights, leading to many well-known maladies of the criminal justice system, which include overcharging, overincarceration, convictions on charges that would likely fail at trial, and even conviction of “factually innocent” persons. -
