THE PETER C. FORAME LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP Philip Knox is a third-year economics student with a 3.89 GPA. A recipient of a Thomas Sowell fellowship, Knox was a member of Alpha Lambda Delta, the National Freshman Honor Society. As a University Scholar, he has helped with Cultural Fusion Field Day through the Global Awareness Committee. Knox also participates in the University Honors Program in General Education. He is a research assistant for economics professor Russ Roberts’s EconTalk podcast, helping to develop the listener base. Knox not only excels academically, he also has strong leadership skills as demonstrated by his organizing a fraternity, the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Colony at Mason. Knox, who serves as the colony’s presi- dent, attended the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Leadership School. In its short existence, the colony has already tripled its membership, participated in Greek Week, the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, the Shack-a-thon, the Colonial Athletic Association Blood Drive Challenge, intramural sports, and Sigma Alpha Epsilon regional events. The fraternity has been elected to the Interfraternity Council.

THE JOHN C. AND LOUISE P. WOOD UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP Joel Rodriguez, Class of 2010, was born and reared in El Salvador. A former gang member, Rodriguez was incarcerated, which gave him time to consider his life and the opportunity to become a leader, improving the lives of many who had also gone astray. Through prison ministry programs, he participated in many constructive activities such as leading and guiding various Bible study and prayer circle groups. In 2005, Rodriguez received a certificate in an occu- pational-technical program as a graphics designer from the Commonwealth of and an accounting certificate from Stratford Career Institute. He earned an AA&S in general studies and completed many courses toward an AA&S in business administration. He is now pursuing a bachelor’s degree in information technology.

THE JOHN C. AND LOUISE P. WOOD GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP Lynne Stiefvater graduated from Framingham Union Hospital School of Nursing in Massachusetts and is a registered nurse with 25 years of experience. She has worked in a variety of specialties encompassing inpatient and outpa- tient health care, including medical surgical, postanesthesia care, presurgical testing, infertility, family practice, obstetrics and gynecology, and cardiology.

Stiefvater has balanced work, family, and education for many years and cur- rently is pursuing a master’s degree in health administration. Active in the community, she has for the past four years taught immigrants to become per- sonal care assistants in a state-certified program offered by Grace Ministries at Floris United Methodist Church. Her personal ambitions were recently chal- lenged by a serious illness, but she now looks ahead optimistically in pursuit of her educational and career goals. Stiefvater hopes to become involved with the growing elder population through work that offers long-term adult day care options that may involve intergenerational care settings.

THE GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY ALUMNI ASSOCIATION SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP Jillian Brown, Class of 2011, is a pre-medicine and English major with a GPA of 3.86. A University Scholar enrolled in the Honors Program in General Education, Brown has achieved Dean’s List standing every semester and is a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society. She is a resident advisor in Presidents Park and a volunteer editor for . Chair-elect of the Scholar Service Committee, she has served as co-leader of the Scholars Spring and Fall 2008 service projects: a food drive and Knitting Extravaganza, for which participants created squares that were used to make afghans for troops overseas. Her other community service activities include Seesaws Against Slavery, an event to raise money for Agape, a home for girls rescued from sexual slavery. She also captained the Light the Night Scholars team, which raised money for the National Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Brown participated in a fund- raising event that collected more than $1,000 for missionaries in Botswana. She volunteers at the House, a ministry of McLean Bible Church in southeast Washington, D.C. Brown is cofounder and vice president of the Mason Chapter of International Justice Mission, a new student organization.

THE SENIOR OF THE YEAR David Lieu is pursuing a dual degree in biology and chemistry with a bio- chemistry concentration. A member of both the biology and chemistry honors programs, Lieu has served as historian and vice president of operations of the Alpha Lambda Delta (ALD) National Honor Society, from which he has received several awards. He is vice president of the Golden Key International Honor Society, founder and president of the Mason’s Chemistry Club, a member of Mason’s Honor Committee, and a sitting member of the College

7 George Mason University Alumni Association Awards and Scholarships of Science’s Student Advisory Council. He is also active in the American Chemical Society, the Atlantic Estuarine Research Society, and the Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-Medical Honor Society. Lieu has twice received Mason’s Center for Teaching Excellence Apprenticeship, and he received the Award for Originality and Creativity, the Award for Best Research Project, and the Student’s Choice Award at Innovations 2007 and 2008. Other honors include Mason’s Vision Award for Academic Excellence in 2006, the American Chemical Society’s Senior Award from the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and the Dean’s Outstanding Senior Scholarship from the Department of Molecular and Microbiology in 2008. After graduation, Lieu will continue his studies in Mason’s accelerated BS/MS program in chemistry.

THE FACULTY MEMBER OF THE YEAR Peter Boettke, MA Economics ’87, PhD Economics ’89, is the BB&T Professor for the Study of Capitalism at the , a University Professor of economics, and an affiliate faculty member in the Russian Studies Program. Before coming to Mason in 1998, Boettke taught at Oakland University, Manhattan College, and New York University. In addition, he was a National Fellow at the Hoover Institution for War, Revolution, and Peace at . He has been a visiting professor and scholar at the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow, the Max Planck Institute for Research into Economic Systems, the Stockholm School of Economics, Central European University in Prague, and Charles University in Prague, and the Hayek Fellow in 2004 and 2006 at the London School of Economics. He won the Golden Dozen Award for Excellence in Teaching from the College of Arts and Sciences at New York University. Boettke has written several books on the history, col- lapse, and transition from communism of the former Soviet Union, as well as books and articles on the history of economic thought and methodology. He is the editor of the Review of Austrian Economics. Boettke has been the director of the Advanced Summer Seminar in Austrian Economics and a former president of the Society for the Development of Austrian Economics.

THE BETH KAUFFMAN AWARD FOR CREATIVITY Andrea Granetto, Class of 2009, is this year’s recipient of the Beth Kauffman Award for Creativity. Granetto has served as WGMU Radio production direc- tor since 2008 and in that short time has demonstrated excellent leadership skills for the student organization. She has been a great resource for students

8 George Mason University Alumni Association Awards and Scholarships in several radio production and workshop classes, offering guidance to help budding broadcasters develop skills. Granetto has supervised production of sta- tion promotional announcements and public service announcements. She has also written and produced several of those announcements, demonstrating her keen writing and production talent. Granetto is always eager to lend a hand in events promoting the radio station to the campus community. In July 2008, she taught basic radio broadcast skills to area high school and middle school students at the annual WGMU Summer Radio Camp. Following graduation this spring with a BA in communication, Granetto plans to pursue a master’s degree in communication this fall at George Mason. Her devotion to WGMU has made the campus radio station a better place.

THE DISTINGUISHED BLACK ALUMNUS AWARD Anthony T. Pierce, BS Public Administration ’83, who received a JD from the Georgetown University Law Center, is a litigator who has handled a variety of complex disputes, including commercial litigation, trade secrets, trademark, copyright, counterfeiting and piracy, software licensing, and employment mat- ters. He is the partner in charge of his firm’s Washington, D.C., office. A -mem ber of the Virginia and District of Columbia Bars, Pierce has been admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court and numerous federal courts through- out the United States. TheWashington Business Journal named Pierce the 2008 Top Washington Lawyer in the category of corporate litigation, and he is rou- tinely named by Virginia Business magazine to its list of Legal Elite in the area of civil litigation. He is past president and a member of the board of trustees of the Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia and serves on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia’s Advisory Committee on Pro Se Litigation. He is a member of the board of directors of the Greater Washington Board of Trade and the Cultural Alliance of Greater Washington. In addition to once serving on Mason’s Diversity Advisory Board, Pierce is a frequent and generous supporter of the university’s Early Identification Program. He also serves on Akin Gump’s diversity and charitable contributions committees.

THE CAREER CONNECTION OUTSTANDING ALUMNI AWARD Garbo Cheung-Jasik, BA Communication ’03, MPA ’07, was a member of Lambda Pi Eta, the communication honor society, while an undergraduate at Mason. While an MPA student, she was recognized with the John D. R. Cole Outstanding MPA Graduate Award by the faculty as the student who

9 George Mason University Alumni Association Awards and Scholarships has “shown the highest standards of academic excellence, a professional com- mitment to public service, and is likely to make further contributions to the common good after graduation.” On completing her MPA, Cheung-Jasik launched an intense search for a federal position. Even with her 10 years of highly responsible positions in the nonprofit sector and her graduate degree, it still took eight months to obtain a federal job. Cheung-Jasik has shared her search strategies with students and helped facilitate three federal government job search workshops for Career Services in 2007–08. The students’ response to her participation and the substance of her advice has been extremely posi- tive. Cheung-Jasik is an exceptionally dedicated alumni volunteer, stepping in to help on short notice when needed.

Robert Santos, BA International Studies ’99, cofounded MetroStar Systems Inc. with two other Mason alumni immediately following graduation. The company provides its clients with agile, collaborative solutions designed to integrate people, processes, technology, and learning across an organization and geographic boundaries through seven major service groups: Portal Strategy and Integration, Enterprise Infrastructure Support, Business Intelligence, New Media Technology, Health, Finance and Insurance, Training and Education, and Custom Development. As president of MetroStar Systems, Santos initi- ated the relationship with Mason and committed to keeping his organization involved on campus. Over the past year alone, Santos has personally recruited at two Job Fairs, participated in Interview Practice Day, and attended the Employer Open House. As a result, MetroStar hired 13 Mason graduates, and the company now comprises approximately 20 percent Mason alumni. Santos is a proud Mason alumnus and continues to support the institution by employing Mason graduates.

THE DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION OUTSTANDING ALUMNI AWARD Glenn “Charlie” Grayburn, Jr., BA Communication ’02, has moved up the government promotion ladder at an extraordinary speed and is now the department head of the Office of Intelligence and Analysis, Department of Homeland Security Headquarters. His attitude, sense of purpose, and hard work set him apart from other students while at Mason. As an intern, Grayburn was an operations shift leader at Dulles Airport. In this position he demonstrated his exceptional leadership and communication skills in speaking

10 George Mason University Alumni Association Awards and Scholarships and writing. He wrote the airport’s emergency actions plan, which is still in effect today. Following graduation, Grayburn held a position in the Office of Law Enforcement in the Transportation Security Administration Headquarters. His communication skills and ability to take on difficult challenges resulted in his being selected to be the principal briefer to the director of Homeland Security and then head of a new department.

THE DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH OUTSTANDING ALUMNI AWARD Mark Farrington, MFA Creative Writing ’89, is an instructor and the faculty fiction advisor for the Writing Program at John Hopkins University. He also works for the Northern Virginia Writing Project, a teacher training organiza- tion at Mason. Farrington, who has a BA from Colby College, has published short stories in The New Virginia Review, The Louisville Review, Union Street Review, and other journals, and he has served as editor-in-chief of Mason’s Phoebe. He also is the author of numerous published articles on the teaching of writing. He taught writing at Mason for 10 years. In 2003, he received the MA in Writing Program’s Outstanding Teaching Award, and in 2004, he received the Outstanding Faculty Award from the Advanced Academic Programs.

THE ROY ROSENZWEIG OUTSTANDING ALUMNI AWARD (ART HISTORY AND HISTORY) Earnie Porta, MA History ’08, received his bachelor of science degree cum laude from the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, where he also earned a certificate in Arab studies. He holds a law degree from the Georgetown University Law Center and is an associate member of the Virginia State Bar. He received the 2006 Josephine Pacheco Award while studying for his master’s degree at Mason. Porta has served as mayor of the town of Occoquan since July 1, 2006, and is an active member of various civic orga- nizations. In 2007, he chaired Occoquan’s Virginia 2007 Commemoration Committee. Today, he serves as a board member for the Occoquan Historical Society and as volunteer curator of the society’s Mill House Museum. Porta is currently pursuing a PhD in history at Georgetown University.

THE WAYNE F. ANDERSON AWARD FOR DISTINGUISHED PUBLIC SERVICE Ray Morrogh, BS Public Administration ’79, JD ’82, is a commonwealth attorney for Virginia in Fairfax . He was recently invited by the chief

11 George Mason University Alumni Association Awards and Scholarships justice of the Virginia Supreme Court to serve as a faculty member of the Virginia State Bar’s Harry L. Carrico Professionalism Course, a nationally acclaimed program for new lawyers in Virginia. Besides fulfilling his duties as a commonwealth attorney, Morrogh is involved in the community, serving as a member of the Fairfax Criminal Justice Advisory Board and the National District Attorneys Association, as well as chair of the Fairfax County Virginia Alcohol Safety Action Program. His community involvement includes coach- ing sports through the Fairfax Police Youth Club and working on the Fairfax County Initiative Against Youth Violence.

THE COLLEGE OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD Deborah Willis, PhD Cultural Studies ’03, is a professor at New York University, teaching photography and imagery. She was a 2005 Guggenheim Fellow and Fletcher Fellow and a 2000 MacArthur Fellow, as well as the 1996 recipient of the Anonymous Was a Woman Foundation Award. She has pur- sued a dual professional career as an art photographer and as one of the nation’s leading historians of African American photography and curator of African American culture. Some of her exhibitions include A Sense of Place, Frick, University of Pittsburgh, 2005; Regarding Beauty, University of Wisconsin, 2003; Engulfed by Katrina: Photographs before and after the Storm, Nathan Cummings Foundation; and Imagining Families—Images and Voices and Reflections in Black. Willis is a co-author ofThe Black Female Body A Photographic History (with Carla Williams) and Obama: The Historic Campaign in Photographs (with Kevin Merida).

THE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION AND HUMAN DEVELOPMENT DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD Lynn Boyer, MA Psychology ’84, PhD Education ’99, has contributed to the field of education, taking leadership roles, participating in teacher profes- sional development, and continuing to produce relevant and critical pieces of scholarship. She has worked to meet the needs of special education students and address the challenges faced by the teachers of these students as director of special education programs and services for the Fairfax County and Manassas City Public Schools. Boyer joined the Council for Exceptional Children and took on the challenge of reforming the National Clearinghouse for Professions in Special Education, where her work was instrumental in the collection and

12 George Mason University Alumni Association Awards and Scholarships analysis of several large datasets that continue to be used to inform policymak- ers on how best to prepare preservice special education teachers. Boyer now serves as executive director of the Office of Special Programs and state director of special education for the Department of Education. Over the years, she has served as an adjunct professor at Mason, Mary Washington College, and Marshall University, and has established a highly credible record of scholarship.

THE COLLEGE OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD Karen Drenkard, PhD Nursing ’06, a registered nurse, has been the director of the Magnet Recognition Program of the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) since June 2008. Previously, she served as senior vice presi- dent, nursing/chief nursing executive at Inova Health Systems where she was responsible for nursing practice, education, research, strategy, and operations; oversaw the nursing leadership team and implementation of nursing services for more than 3,900 nurses at multiple sites; led two Inova hospitals to suc- cessful Magnet designation; and promoted scholarships for nursing students at Mason and other institutions of higher learning. In addition, Drenkard is a member of the National Advisory Council on Nurse Education and Practice, has served on Virginia’s Health Reform Commission, has served as chair of the (Virginia) Governor’s Advisory Council on the Future of Nursing, and is ANCC board-certified as a nurse executive, advanced. An active member of George Mason’s Alumni Chapter, she served on the Dean’s Search Committee and the Provost’s Health Commission.

THE COLLEGE OF SCIENCE DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD Patrick Brant, BA Chemistry ’72, is the chief polymer scientist in Global Research and Development, ExxonMobil Chemical. Along with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Mason, he has a PhD in physical inorganic chemistry from the University of Arizona. Following a postdoctoral assignment at Purdue University and a National Research Council Fellowship at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), Brant accepted a staff research appointment at NRL in 1978. He joined ExxonMobil Chemical in 1981, where his technical and man- agement assignments have included basic and applied work in polyolefins and their blends, polyolefin catalysts, plant operations, polyolefin-based adhesives, and development and application of advanced characterization methods. Brant

13 George Mason University Alumni Association Awards and Scholarships is the technical leader for the design of new battery separator films for lithium ion batteries, especially applied to their use in hybrid electric and electric vehicles. He is author or co-author of more than 48 publications and more than 30 issued patents. He has received numerous company awards and most recently led the team that received the ICIS Best Product Innovation Award for 2008 for work on novel battery separator films.

THE THOMAS W. ISZARD III DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD Clyde L. Hughes Jr., MA Music ’97, is a professor of brass studies and conductor of the Symphonic Band at Mason. He is also director of bands emeritus of Hermitage High School, Henrico County, Virginia, where for 30 years his bands consistently received superior performance ratings in wind ensemble, concert band, field show and parade, and jazz ensemble throughout the United States and Canada. He received a BA in music education from the University of Richmond. Hughes is in demand as a guest conductor for university, professional, all county, and all‐district and regional bands, and has conducted throughout Europe. He serves as an adjudicator and clinician for marching band and concert band festivals in the United States and Canada, and is an elected member of the Festival of States Band Directors Hall of Fame. He received the National Band Association Citation of Excellence for outstanding contributions to bands and band music. Hughes retired as a lieu- tenant colonel from the U.S. Army Reserve. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Adjutant General Corps School, Infantry School, and Command and General Staff College. His awards include the National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and three Meritorious Service Medals.

THE INSTITUTE FOR CONFLICT ANALYSIS AND RESOLUTION DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD Mohammed Abu-Nimer, PhD Conflict Analysis and Resolution ’93, is a professor in the International Peace and Conflict Resolution Program at the School of International Service and director of the Peacebuilding and Development Institute at American University. An expert on conflict resolu- tion and dialogue for peace, Abu-Nimer has conducted research on conflict resolution and dialogue for peace among Palestinians and Jews in Israel. His work has focused on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and on application of conflict resolution models in Muslim communities. Abu-Nimer has also

14 George Mason University Alumni Association Awards and Scholarships conducted interreligious conflict resolution training and interfaith dialogue. As a scholar-practitioner, he has been intervening and conducting conflict resolution training workshops around the world, including Palestine, Israel, Egypt, Northern Ireland, Philippines, and Sri Lanka. Abu-Nimer was honored for his efforts with the Morton Deutsch Conflict Award from the American Psychological Association’s Peace Psychology Division. In addition to his numerous publications, Abu-Nimer is the co-founder and co-editor of the Journal of Peacebuilding and Development. He holds a BA and an MA from Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

THE GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF LAW DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD As a student at Mason’s Law School, Will Consovoy, JD ’01, was editor-in- chief of the George Mason University Civil Rights Law Journal and a writing fellow in the Legal Research, Writing, and Analysis Program. After graduation, he was a law clerk for the Arlington Circuit Court and then an associate at McGuireWoods. In July 2003, he became a law clerk to the Honorable Edith H. Jones of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. He later returned to Washington, D.C., as an associate at Wiley, Rein & Fielding LLP. In 2008, he became the law school’s first graduate to clerk at the U.S. Supreme Court as the law clerk to Justice Clarence Thomas. Consovoy has worked tirelessly to assist students and enhance Mason’s reputation and has participated in annual career sessions. In 2005, he joined his alma mater as an adjunct professor teaching advanced constitutional law. This past year, he was a guest lecturer in the school’s scholarly writing course.

THE SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD William Seippel, BS Business Administration ’78, has more than 25 years of financial and operational experience. He has been involved in the successful negotiation of more than 20 acquisitions and played a leading role in structur- ing complex transactions that have raised $5 billion in capital, two of which received the prestigious Institutional Investor Deal of the Year Award. Seippel has also served as a consultant to various boards of directors on mergers and acquisitions and strategic business and financial planning. Prior to founding WorthPoint, Seippel served as chief financial officer of MIVA, vice president and chief financial officer for AirGate PCS, chief financial officer and chief operating officer for Digital Commerce Corporation, chief financial officer for

Global Telesystems Groups, and chief financial officer for Landmark Graphics Corporation. Seippel has an MBA from American University. He currently serves on the Dean’s Advisory Board for the School of Management.

THE SCHOOL OF PUBLIC POLICY DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD Alison M. White, MPP ’05, has worked in the field of public broadcasting for 30 years and is the director of community engagement and awareness at the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. There she oversees federally funded, large-scale investments in television and radio outreach as well as in com- munity collaboration. The recipient of the School of Public Policy’s Alexis De Tocqueville Award in 2005, she has been extremely active in the school’s Alumni Chapter, serving as vice president, president, and treasurer. She has also been an innovative and productive volunteer chapter leader, developing new events such as Meet the School of Public Policy Authors in 2007–08 and overseeing the highly successful School of Public Policy Alumni Chapter Signature Event in April 2008 on Cuba in Transition.

THE VOLGENAU SCHOOL OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND ENGINEERING DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD David P. Brown, PhD Information Technology ’04, is a senior principal analyst for Innovative Decisions Inc. He retired from the U.S. Navy after 22 years of service in naval aviation and was previously a professor of systems engineering at the Defense Acquisition University. Since receiving his degree, he has made the most of his Mason education receiving a Systems Engineering Excellence Award from the Department of Defense and last year’s NASA Team Award. He won a best paper award from Northrop Grumman in 2006 and recently published a book on modeling and simulation, both based on his doc- toral research work at Mason. He joined the Volgenau School Alumni Board in 2007 and has been active in board activities. He and his wife have been active supporters of Mason activities and participants in the 2010 campaign for the new engineering building.

THE ALUMNI SERVICE AWARD Jeffery M. Johnson, BS Business Administration ’75, left public accounting as an auditor to enter the insurance business in 1976. Today, he is a principal and president of Johnson & Strachan Inc., a full service, multi-line, commercial, and personal insurance agency. Johnson is a former chair of Mason’s Annual

Fund and has served on the board of directors and as president of the George Mason University Alumni Association. He was on the alumni committee for the university’s first comprehensive campaign. For several years, he has been involved with Five Talents International, a Christian microfinance organiza- tion that offers people the opportunity to lift themselves out of poverty by providing access to basic savings and microcredit services built on their trusted community traditions. Johnson has served as chair of the Five Talents annual golf outing fundraiser. He has been to the Philippines three times on Business as Mission trips. On these trips, he has taught a basic business curriculum that includes accounting, marketing, and writing a basic business plan. A member of the Church of the Holy Comforter in Vienna, Virginia, he also volunteers his time to a number of church committees.

THE ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR John Paul (J. P.) Phaup, MBA ’91, is managing director, investments, at Phaup Brown Wealth Management Group of Wachovia Securities. He also is an adjunct professor in the School of Management and an instructor in the Continuing Professional Education Program. Previously, Phaup was a political consultant and campaign business manager and cofounded a software firm that developed microsystems for campaign efforts. He has been an enthusiastic sup- porter and actively involved with Mason for more than 17 years. Phaup began his volunteer work as a member of the School of Management Special Work List. He served as a higher education bond volunteer and joined the Alumni Board in 1992. In 1993, he became the founder of the MBA Alumni Chapter, serving as its first president. A President’s Circle Society member, he has given generously of his personal time. Phaup’s passion for the performing arts has led to his involvement with the College of Visual and Performing Arts, where he serves as vice chair of the Arts at Mason Partnership Board and chair of the Instruments in the Attic campaign. In addition, Phaup is a current member of the George Mason University Foundation Board of Trustees and serves on the Alumni Action Steering Committee.
