Previous research by academics on the effect of the Internet on popular music has centered on the impact of Napster and peer-to-peer networks on the distribution of recordings (Alexander, 2002; Ayres & Williams, 2004; Bishop, 2004; Daniel & Klimis, 1999; Fox, 2004; Mardesich, 1999; & Oberholzer & Strumpf, 2004). However, unexamined is the influence of the Internet on a specific music subculture, punk. This is important because the subculture is occupied mainly by youth engaged with both the Internet and punk music. The Internet's influence on the punk subculture is a particularly important area of study because the Internet alters how participants in the subculture (punk fans, bands and independent labels) communicate with one another, as well as changes the distribution of punk artifacts and information. ii Central to this study is the history of the major labels' dominance over the distribution and promotion of punk music, a domination examined via critical political economy theory.

I define the indie hype cycle as a naturalized communicative process governing the flow of critical favor within the indie music community and identify its four primary phases as entrance on to the scene, hype generation, backlash, and obscurity/visibility. To understand the interaction between the hype cycle and critical reception, the project focuses on Arcade Fire and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (CYHSY) as two bands emblematic of the critical divergence possible after initial success. It compares the reviews of the bands’ debut and sophomore albums by Pitchfork, a prominent indie music website, and identifies genre, elitism, and authenticity as key constructs in the way the site frames the bands as indie, and thus, worthy of praise. I argue that an economy of authenticity—featuring emotional, economic, and talent- based forms—affects the indie hype cycle in a variety of ways. The thesis concludes that the mechanics of indie music criticism have extensive influence upon the indie hype cycle.

    Buzz Magazine - Story Of The Year (Dan Marsala) (First Published: February 2010) -Bianca Bozzi Not many bands out there can claim they were roughed up by Godsmack’s roadies outside of a radio station once. ‘We played a radio station in 2003, and we told the crowd to move closer to the stage. They were angry, mainly at me ‘cos I’m the lead singer.’ recounts Dan Marsala. ‘I know our bass player got a punch to the face, [but] no one got too hurt. It was over in about two minutes...It’s been about six years, so I don’t really care about it anymore. So we just continue to make fun of each other.’ But Marsala outrights says ‘I don’t like Godsmack.’ Missouri band Story Of The Year are currently on tour around the southern US with acts including Maylene, The Sons of Disaster and Thrice, who SOTY played with recently. ‘Yeah, we played with Thrice not that long ago,’ explains Marsala. ‘We’ve toured with them about three or four times...and it’s been about three or four years since we played together.’ There is always some guarantee of shenanigans at SOTY’s gigs and this time is no different, especially with the release of their new album The Constant. ‘The other night, there was a four year-old kid on his dad’s shoulders, and Ryan (Phillips, SOTY guitarist) let him play his guitar...in front of about 5000 people.’ Marsala also notes that there is always craziness surrounding SOTY’s gigs, even amongst the band ‘always hurting and jumping on each other.’ The Constant, produced by Michael "Elvis" Baskette (Escape The Fate, Incubus), is SOTY’s fourth album, and the creative process was rather straightforward.

Chapel Hill 2014 Approved by: Mark Katz David García Jocelyn Neal Philip Vandermeer Albin Zak © 2014 Brian Jones ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT BRIAN JONES: Signifying DIY: Process-Oriented Aesthetics in 1990s Alternative Rock and Hip-Hop (Under the direction of Mark Katz) This dissertation posits and demonstrates a framework for analyzing how sound recordings convey meaning in rock—considering how listeners experience recordings, not only as fixed products, but also as sonic evidence of implied actions. I call this framework process-oriented aesthetics, and I define it as a sensibility in which musical meaning is conveyed in a record’s sonic foregrounding of its own production process. In this sensibility, recordings sonically evoke what I call a production myth—a real or imagined backstory, nurtured through the surrounding discourse, that adds meaning to the musical sounds. Production myths encourage listeners to aestheticize practices of musical creation and help facilitate intellectual and creative engagement in listening. The effects of process-oriented aesthetics rely upon the interplay between the nuances of recorded sound and the assumed (or imagined) circumstances of their production. I investigate these aesthetic sensibilities in the music and discourse of 1990s alternative rock and hip-hop. Alternative rock in the 1990s harbored an enduring tension between the small- scale, non-commercial values of its indie roots and the music’s eventual mass-mediated popularity.

What Are You Waiting For: We knew straight away that this song would work well with real strings, it turned out better than we expected, very epic. For us this is the most radio friendly song on the EP, and again has quite a few styles in there including an uplifting middle eight.     BLESSTHEFALL 12.10.2011 Stuttgart Die Röhre In the two-year span since BLESSTHEFALL’s album His Last Walk was released, the band underwent some internal repairs that could have sunk any other band on the rise. Not so for the Phoenix five-piece, who learned that a kink in the gears isn’t enough to stop a band this strong for good. Formed in 2004 by a group of higher-thinking high-schoolers who wanted their peers to find meaning and camaraderie in their music, BLESSTHEFALL was intent on making their post-hardcore/screamo blend a different breed that people would remember. After several gigs in the area, more than just the locals began to notice. Later, after a 3-song EP made the rounds at shows and landed in label hands, this buzzy and burgeoning band were signed to Warner subsidiary Science Records and making their first full-length. “Everyone has their first shows that consist of just the bands, and your parents, if you’re lucky,” reflects guitarist Eric Lambert. “Things picked up rather quickly, though. We started selling out hometown shows, then started touring, and, oddly enough, we had fans outside of Arizona. They were small shows, but the fans we met are still coming to every show and are the best people ever.” Armed with a defiant new record and a new frontman, BLESSTHEFALL returned to the scene in 2008 as a stronger entity than ever before. Witness, the band’s sophomore album and first with singer Beau Bokan, formerly of Take the Crown, was be released by Fearless Records, who signed the band in May 2009.
