An International Islamic Seminar of

The quarterly Islamic Culture of Hyderabad started publication in 1927 and its Golden Jubilee Celebrations were held at Campus, Hyderabad, from the 10th to the 14th January, 1979. In this connection an International Seminar was held during this period on the subject : Emerging Trends and Patterns in Muslim Societies. Two academic sessions were held everyday - one in the forenoon and the other in the afternoon. There was no session on Saturday, the 13th January on which the delegates were taken to a city tour of historic sites, a visit to the and the . The Golden Jubilee Celebrations started with the recitation from the holy on Wednesday, January 10, at 5 p.m. at the Jubilee Hall. Mr. Sayyid Ali Akbar, Vice- President of the Governing Board, Islamic Culture, welcomed the delegates. It was followedby a short lecture delivered by Mr. M. A. Abbasi, Chairman, Steering Commit- tee, concerning the contribution of Islamic Culture to Islamic thought and civilization. Then the Golden Jubilee ComemorationVolume published on the occasionwas released by Dr. Ram Reddy, the Vice-Chancellorof Osmania University. His Highness Mufakh- kham Jäh Bahädur, President of the Islamic Culture Board, read his Presidential Address. The Inaugural Address was delivered by Justice M. Hidayatullah, Chief Justice of (Retc.). The Inaugural session ended at 6-15 p.m. after Prof. S. ManzoorAlam had proposed a vote of thanks. The followingfourteen papers were presented during the Seminar in English :

Prof. Khwaja Ahmad Faruqi (Delhi) :Wahhabi Literature in Urdu. 4. Dr. M. A. Saleem Khan (Aligarh) : Strength and Health of Contemporary Arab Societies.- An Elementary Assessment. 5. Mr. Sadiq Naqvi (Hyderabad) : Conflicts in Basic Principles of Muslim Education.

The business session was held on January 14, at 2.30 p.m. It was presided over by Mr. M. A. Abbasi. At first a report about the Seminar was read out by the Rapporteur- General. Dr. M. S. Khan then proposed that the Seminar be held after every two years at Hyderabad and he put forward convincingreasons. It was accepted and a resolution was passed accordingly. Prof. S. Manzoor Alam proposed that a Department for the study of the Gulf States be opened at Osmania University. A resulution was also passed unanimously supporting it. The validectory sessionwas held at 4 p.m. which was presided over by Dr. Moazzam Husain of the UNESCO now residing at Hyderabad. The address was delivered by Dr. Ram Reddy, the Vice-Chancellor. This sessionand the Seminar ended with a vote of thanks proposed by Prof. Theodore P. Wright Jr., Prof. Serajul Haq and Prof. S. ManzoorAlam. One of the high lights of this Seminar was a short speech delivered by Dr. Salah El-Dine Tarazi of the Syrian Arab Republic, a member of the International Court of Justice, Den Haag, on January 12, in the afternoon Session, after he was awarded the degree of Ph.D. (Honori8Ca2cea) by the Osmania University.
