TC070515SP07B TE AWAMUTU College Rugby Club development tour squad members with players from Chuckanut after their game, won 41-0 by the tourists. Development tour a success

Te Awamutu College Rugby Club’s development squad recently returned from a successful 14-day tour of Canada and USA. The trip was the culmination of 18 months of fundraising — involving every- WAYNE GOOD thing from raffles and quiz nights to barbecues and manual labour to raise the $100,000 required. The tour saw 23 players (14-18 years old) involved in three games of rugby against schools and clubs, supported by three staff and three parents. The tourists were all hosted exception- ally well by coaching staff, players and their families. The first game proved to be a hard fought affair against Earl Marriott, a school ranked third in British Columbia and the Canadian representative in the 2015 Sanix Rugby Tournament in Japan. Tour co-ordinator Brent Oliedam says the Te Awamutu College squad was playing their first game of the season and it showed. “The locals started well, scoring seem- ingly at will, and ended the first half up 20 nil. “An inspired half time talk by tour Join our resident colour and curtain captain Josh Reynolds had the desired effect and Te Awamutu started stringing consultant Wayne Good for an combinations together, playing more to their potential.” evening of design inspiration After a huge second half the final score was 22-20 to Te Awamutu. “It was the hard hit out the players needed. WEDNESDAY, MAY 20th “The team then went on to two compre- hensive wins against USA club side Chuckanut Bay (41-0) and Canadian school 7.00PM Argyle Secondary (66-0). “The final game was especially pleasing as Te Awamutu started all of their younger players.” @ CARPET COURT Te Awamutu players were billeted at each stop so they could experience the local culture and make new friends.
