“FLYFM Crushes on David Archuleta” Week, Malaysia “FLYFM crushes on David Archuleta” Week, Malaysia ArchuCupcake, anyone? These delicious and “too pretty to be eaten” cupcakes were specially designed and baked by Elicia, a Malaysian ArchAngel from Archuleta Avenue Malaysia (http://archuletavenue.wordpress.com/) to thank and appreciate FlyFM (http://www.flyfm.com.my/), one of the three major English radio stations for conducting the “FlyFM crushes on David Archuleta” week from September 15th to 19th during its Must Have Music segments (10 am to 4 pm). For the Malaysian ArchAngels, it was a week of pure ArchuHeaven whereby FlyFM aired the songs David had sung from his Star Search to American Idol days, snippets of his interview clips and phone conversations of the DJs with the fans, which were interspersed into their normal playlist. The special week-long feature came about after FlyFM was overwhelmed with tons of requests for Crush and Ai Sim, a Malaysian Golden Archie was instrumental in helping FlyFM to compile the materials for the feature. We have included her story below. What FlyFM did with David Archuleta Week was an unprecedented move on their part and the Malaysian ArchAngels were a force to be reckoned with. It was a golden opportunity not only for the ArchAngels to reminisce but to give an up close and personal knowledge and information to the non-fans. FlyFM also deserves another major kudos – they were the first radio station to debut Crush on Friday after the Z100 world premiere and Crush has been crushing their biggest countdown chart, “Most Wanted Chart” which plays the top 10 most requested song every Monday to Friday. So we showered FlyFM with some ArchuLove! On Sept. 8 Steve called me and informed me that they are organizing “David Archuleta Week” the following week and required my assistance provide him with some of Archie Angels’ contact numbers for him to call them to arrange for some recordings of their ‘shout outs’ to be aired during the program. Steve told me “because you are the only one who sent us the updates on David Archuleta, you are officially designated as David Archuleta’s biggest fan on “Music Must Have!” Ha! Ha! What I did was provide David’s updates, interviews & video links whenever submitting Crush requests! My main intention was to let them who is “DAVID ARCHULETA” and not just introducing David as AI Runner-Up!! I only provided FlyFM with the information I had on David the rest was done by them. On the morning of the 2nd day I sent 2 emails to Adam (Music Director). One with the 1st day recap and another one with WYSYLM Tulsa Youtube to thank FlyFM for organizing such remarkable program! I managed to speak to Adam later in the afternoon. The 1st thing of course was to thank him and his team personally for organizing the program. He asked me whether it is up to my expectation so far. Ha ha! I told him that I was so nervous and excited and I wanted to share with the whole world including David! He told me I should be proud because FlyFM has not done this for any artist before. Adam told me he was so shocked with details of the recap! It was the 1st time he had read such recaps and comments. He told me he became nervous and worried because he will be coming out for the show after he read the recap. (jokingly)!!! Arch Angels are a serious lot!!! According to Adam the response to this program has been overwhelming, telephone requests and web requests have been pouring in. Ha ha! They received complaints too for not having enough staff to handle phone calls! FlyFM definitely did a fabulous job! The compilation of songs during AI with the judges’ comments and the interview clips were really useful. What a way to promote David! I sent some Famous Amos cookies as gifts on Friday morning to Adam, Steve and Hafiz in appreciation of their job well done. The guys (just after Hafiz started the show) called me to thank me for the cookies and Adam also acknowledged my contribution to the program! I thanked him and his team once again for organizing this show and told him after this David’s fan base in Malaysia will definitely grow. We have started a rave on David Archuleta. Description: A major assumption of this class is that all cultures "reveal themselves" in the artifacts that are left behind. Artifacts that help explain what a culture celebrates and what values it honors or disdains. Artifacts like: stone-age weapons, Roman statuary, Mayan ruins, fairy tales, religious rituals and of course written texts. Our culture is still current, but it too offers artifacts and various texts that reflect what values are celebrated and what behavior is honored or disdained. The CBS Evening News, Law & Order, The Office, Oprah, The Simpsons, SNL, American Idol, ads for Chanel #5 or the Taco Bell website. All these mediated texts -- AND the institutions that produce these mediated texts AND the impact these mediated texts have on audiences -- needs regular and constant attention. Content (texts)! Institutions! Audiences! You will be expected to keep track of the different -- sometimes significantly different -- perspectives covered in the readings, lectures & screenings. Always take notes -- especially regarding the screenings. Objectives: This course is designed to develop advanced Media Literacy Skills related to the electronic media – its programming, its institutions and its audiences. There will be a considerable writing component: term paper, essays, short writing assignments.

Indeed, they had become punch lines in comedyAmerican routines: Idol from Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert complaining that it took too long to determine the next American Idol (in a gag that had audiences assuming he was referring to the next U.S. president) to ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel quipping that, after watching the vice presidential debate during the U.S. presidential campaign in 2008, he “voted four times for Sarah Palin and six times for David Archuleta,” in reference to the popular Republican vice presidential candidate and frontrunner contestant that year. Interestingly, movie critic RogerAmerican Ebert Idol’s mounted criticism against Palin for being “the American Idol candidate,” in which he argued the following: I think I might be able to explain some of Sarah Palin’s appeal. She’s the “American Idol” candidate. Consider. What defines an “American Idol” finalist? They’re good‑looking, work well on television, have a sunny personality, are fierce competitors, and so talented, why, they’re darned near the real thing. There’s a reason “American Idol” gets such high ratings. People identify with the contestants. They think, Hey, that could be me up there on that show! . My problem is, I don’t want to be up there. I don’t want a vice president who is darned near good enough. I want a vice president who is better, wiser, well‑traveled, has met world leaders, who three months ago had an opinion on Iraq.
