The Three Texts Presented Here—Two by the Austrian Hans Sedlmayr Of
The three texts presented here—two by the Austrian Hans Sedlmayr of the Second Vienna School and one by the German Rudolf Wittkower—document an intellectual skirmish that played out in Viennese journals in 1931–1932. On the surface, the articles, whose subject matter was late baroque architecture, appear to debate the stakes of formalism. But in reality, their back-and-forth over a church façade by the late-baroque Roman architect Carlo Fontana registers a profound struggle for the soul of art history itself.1 The essays are intertextually bound to a larger group of texts in which the young Sedlmayr announced a program of Strukturforschung (structural research) or Strukturanalyse (structural analysis) for a Kunstgeschichte (history of art) reoriented as Kunstwissenschaft (science of art). Sedlmayr laid out his program in two articles published around the exchange with Wittkower: “The Quintessence of Riegl’s Teachings” (1929), in which he proposed his Strukturforschung as a substitute for Alois Riegl’s Kunstwollen; and “Toward a Rigorous Study of Art” (1931), in which he formalized two levels of art-historical research: a “first” art history and a “second” art history.2 Sedlmayr, who later characterized this early period as highly abstract, was 1 Prior accounts examine this episode from the perspective of Sedlmayr (study of Wittkower as a figure has been limited). Harris Third Reich Collection is a comprehensive collection on Germany from 1933 to 1945. It began in 1980 with a donation of funds, books, and documents from Whitney R. Harris, who played a key role in prosecuting Nazi war criminals during the Nuremberg trials in 1945-1946. His book Tyranny on Trial is recognized as the first significant study of Nuremberg and its legacy. -

Hans Sedlmayr, The Architecture of Borromini Introduced, edited and translated by Karl Johns Introductory remarks on Sedlmayr’s Borromini Die Architektur Borrominis is probably the most ambitious publication from the period in Sedlmayr’s career before he achieved his greatest ambition of acceding to the chair at the University of Vienna. It deserves attention since it more tangibly illustrates what he had been calling for in some of his more abstract proposals.1 As with much that he published during this period and even later, he saw it as a provisional contribution constantly referring to aspects ‘yet to be analyzed’ ‘studied in sufficient detail’ or calling for ‘further analysis’. Indeed, he later referred back to this book as an ‘Anfängerarbeit’. It was originally intended to be followed by a second volume. Much of his publications seem ‘experimental’ and written in the form of manifestoes. A mode of analyzing architecture was not easily adaptable to paintings or sculpture. Some of his terms are intended to be more precise than what was then current but are quite vague in their own way. Some of the fundamental proposals can lead to circular arguments such as the necessity of the ‘proper disposition’. The cardinal features of his consistent approach to art as including the ‘proper disposition’ and the discovery of the ‘centre’ which allows the only complete ‘understanding’ of an individual art work or procedure of an individual artist occurs here also in his part 1 chapter 1, part 2, chapter three and section 46. Hans Sedlmayr had many facets. In a time when formal education taught foreign languages only for reading purposes he spoke the western European languages relatively easily and kept up with the poetry being published then, particularly in English, and also kept abreast of the theoretical publications in the sciences and the other arts such as music.
