Ønsket om å cashe inn på etablerte merkevarer er så sterk blant studioene at mer eller mindre velfunderte filmer kastes mot publikum i stadig hyppigere tempo. Sjeldent eller aldri makter oppfølgeren å matche kvaliteten til originalproduktet - Toy Story-serien er unntaket som bekrefter regelen. Happy Feet 2 føyer seg inn i den lange rekken av umotiverte oppfølgere - filmer som verken driver manusskriving eller teknikkutvikling videre og som kun bidrar til å fore et ubevisst filmpublikum. For filmene tjener penger, ellers hadde vi ikke sett filmer som  Happy Feet 2, Shrek 4, Biler 2 og så videre, og så videre. Burde vi ikke kreve mer av disse filmene bortsett fra gjenkjennelige karakterer?  Den opprinnelige Happy Feet (2006) scoret godt hos publikum ved å tilby en kosegod pingvinunge som hovedkarakter og fengende musikk for å favne massene. Produksjonen tok godt vare på motion capture-teknologien og ble sogar tildelt en Oscar for beste animerte langfilm. Filmpublikummet så ut til å være hektet på pingviner og et overtydelig miljøbudskap - bare året før hadde dokumentaren Pingvinenes marsj blitt en meget usannsynlig publikumshit over store deler av kloden og samme år som pingvinene danset kom Al Gore-filmen En ubehagelig sannhet med sitt klimabudskap.
