We are here today to celebrate this major achievement with your families, friends, and fellow students. As your journey continues-here in Minnesota, across the nation, or around the globe-you will surely change others, as they in turn, change you. I wish for you amazing opportunities, great friendships, and a future of possibilities. Going forth in your chosen fields, I urge you to remember to not only apply what you have learned from your time here with us, but to also stay open to learning from everyone and everything in the days and years to come. It is this continuous process of discovery that allows ·us to deepen and use our gifts and to fully appreciate the greatest gift of all-the gift of learning. We are proud to have you as colleagues. Ceremony Policies To ensure a safe and enjoyable evening for all, please adhere to the following policies while in Northrop Memorial Auditorium: • Please turn off cell phone and pager ringers during the ceremony. • Due to fire regulations, auditorium aisles must be kept clear. Camera and video equipment, baby carriers, and strollers are not allowed in the aisles. • For liability reasons, no one will be allo~ed on the stage following the commencement ceremony. • Smoking is not permitted in this or any other University building. 5 Biographical Information Jean K. Quam Jean K. Quam has served as interim dean since fall 2008. Quam came to the University of Minnesota in 1980, when she joined the School of Social Work as a faculty member and served as the school's director from 1991 to 2006. In 2005-2006, she co-chaired a University-wide task force that helped to develop the new College of Education and Human Development, which now includes the former CEHD, General College, and the College of Human Ecology [where the School of Social Work was housed). She earned a Ph.D. in social work at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an M.S.W. from the University of Nebraska. Trained as a gerontologist, she conducts research on marginalized elderly,in areas of serious and persistent mental illness, and sexuality and aging . She is the author of three books and many publications and presentations. Clyde Turner A former basketball star at the University of Minnesota, Clyde Turner has made a career of community leadership and family and youth advocacy. Turner was a student and played on the team that won the 1972 Big Ten championship and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16. He went on to earn a. bachelor's degree in education and M.S.W. from the University of Minnesota. Since 2007, Turner has been manager of Ramsey County Family Services Division and was previously the intake division manager of the child protection unit at Ramsey County Human Services .. Before that, he worked 14 years as an associate director for Family Alternatives, a private foster care agency in Minneapolis, and was a supervisor and caseworker for Big Brothers Big Sisters for 15 years. In 1991, he served on a Hennepin County Blue Ribbon Task Force that studied foster placements of children of color. Turner has served on boards for several organizations, including the National Foster Parent Association ." YMCA, Phyllis Wheatley Community Center, and Mentoring Partnership of Minnesota. He started the Clyde Turner Educational Basketball Camp 26 years ago which has served over 10,000 Twin Cities urban youth. In 1994, he founded Past Athletes Concerned about Education, which mentors and tutors African-American students in the Twin Cities public schools. Thomas P. Jandris Thomas [Tom] Jandris is dean of the College of Graduate and Innovative Programs at Concordia University in Chicago. He has led several educational technology and consulting firms, including as CEO of Progress Education Corporation, president of EDmin, Inc., chairman of Fox River Learning, Inc., CEO of HOSTS Corporation, and founder and managing partner of EnterChange, Inc., a human resources consulting company. He has been involved in several school policy initiatives, acting as director of state services for the Education Commis sion of the States [ECSI. and as lead consultant to the governor of Michigan and the Detroit mayor's office during a reform takeover of the Detroit Public Schools. Jandris also has extensive background in education, working as a teacher, 6 principal, and director of secondary education at several Illinois school districts. A licensed psychologist, he continues to teach at the graduate level. He holds a Ph .D. from the University of Minnesota; M.Ed . from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan; and a B.S. from Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois. Dean Johnson Dean Johnson has beeri a University of Minnesota regent since 2007 . He has been a parish pastor at Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar, Minnesota for 35 years. He also was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives [1978 to 1982) and the Minnesota Senate [1982 to 2006). where he served as minority and majority leader. A brigadier general in the United States Army National Guard, he was special assistant to the chief of chaplains, National Guard Bureau, Washington, D.C ., and received numerous awards and commendations, including the Legion of Merit. He received a bachelor of arts degree from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, a master of divinity degree from Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, and a master's degree in strategic studies kom the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Kristina Hefty Kristina is graduating with a bachelor of science degree in kinesiology with an emphasis in exercise science and minors in general management, coaching, and nutrition. During her undergraduate career, Kristina has been actively involved in campus activities. She was a University of Minnesota hockey cheerleader for four years, and the cheerleading team's coach. She served in the Student Senate, University Senate, Minnesota Student Association, Student Affairs Student Advisory Board, Advisory Board for Undergraduate Education, Student On-Campus Stadium Committee, We Are Minnesota Sportsmanship Initiative, and as Recreational Sports Advisory Board cha ir. She also served on the CEHD Curriculum Council, and the CEHD. Undergraduate Student Board. After graduation, Kristina plans to pursue furHier study in health policy in the area of disease prevention. 7 Special Announcements Sign Language Interpreter For your convenience, a sign language interpreter will be located on the stage in Northrop Memorial Auditorium .
