ArmsofHope.org 2 Celebrating Years of Service Houseparents Leave Legacy of Love Sixteen years ago, Tom and Judy Lovelady came to Medina, Texas, to serve as house parents for Arms of Hope - Medina Campus. Initially they planned to be here for two years, two turned to five, and five turned to a life- time of parenting and loving children in need. They turned their house into a home by focus- ing not just on children’s physical needs but their emotional and spiritual needs as well. The Loveladys poured their hearts into the lives of more than 200 different children over their sixteen years of service. Their - ished experiences with the children included sharing laughter during the good times, tears during the times of struggle, pride when cel- ebrating achievements and the complete joy of witnessing the ultimate blessing of children turning their lives around. On January 22nd, the Loveladys were honored at a campus banquet where former residents and family were in attendance. Tom and Judy will live in Kerrville, Texas, and will continue to find ways to love and minister to the most disadvantaged and needy children in our community. “Working with committed individuals like Tom and Judy who put their faith into action everyday is a blessing for us all. The authenticity of their faith and service is something we all benefit from observing and is readily apparent from the way they’ve done their jobs so well while avoiding any recognition,” stated Kevin McDonald, Arms of Hope President & CEO. vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv Arms of Hope Board Recognizes Brazell’s Five Years of Board Service

11 Reaching Generations - Spring 2011 Leading by Example So often we see our young people easily influenced by celebrities like professional ath- letes. Our hope is that more young people will have the opportunity to share time with retired Texas Rangers pitcher and Arms of Hope advocate, Mike Munoz (pictured left). Mike has been a good friend to Arms of Hope and has been a great role model and encour- ager to many of the young people we serve. He believes in our cause and is always look- ing for a way to be involved. This past Christmas, Mike shared encouragement and gave thanks to a special group of high school students who were committed to making certain the children Arms of Hope is assisting through our Outreach Ministry Program had a very special Christmas. Mike accompanied Coach Terry Drake – AOH Director of Outreach Ministry and visited several area high schools to collect the Christmas gifts some very thoughtful students helped gather for our children. The student athletes at Red Oak, Ennis, Burleson and Mesquite Poteet High Schools and Navarro Junior College worked diligently to collect toys and essentials for over 200 AOH children. Mike encouraged these special volunteers to always focus on giving back to their communities and to focus first on those most in need. We are inspired by and thankful for the support Mike Munoz provides to Arms of Hope. My Redemption - A Mother’s Personal Testimony By Ashley N. - Arms of Hope - Medina Campus Resident I have been in the Arms of Hope Together Program since Decem- ber, 2009. Before entering the program, I lived a life that few could ever imagine. The world that I lived in was very dark. No matter what time it was when I walked outside, it was complete blackness. I was a very lonely and depressed person. I couldn’t look anyone in the eyes when they talked to me, much less look at myself in the mirror. I was beaten, homeless, and just a shell of a body for my children. I didn’t have friends, because if I couldn’t benefit from them in some way they were useless to me. My family didn’t want me around, and I was fresh out of a treatment center after being held hostage in a 10 year drug addiction. I hated who I had become. I hated the world and everyone in it. I have been here a little over a year. My life now is something I never thought possible. I am now 15 months clean and in my 2nd semes- ter of college. What I think and how I feel matters today. I have a place for my children and me to call home. We eat dinner together every night. They know that I am there when they go to sleep, and they can count on me to be there when they wake up. I am completely involved in every- thing my children do, and I love every minute of it. Today, I can walk with my head held high. And, not only do I like myself, I love me. All of these things are great, and I deserve it. But, I want to add a couple of things - my children each wrote me a little letter for Valentine’s Day. From Kalie: Dear mom, I love you because you are my mom. I love you because you take care of me. . You are the best mom ever! Love, Kalie From Dakota; “Why I Love You” I love you because you made our lives better. I love you so much until I die. You are the best at taking care of us. You give us the best love in the world. Love, Dakota NOW THAT’S REDEMPTION! Ashley N.

ArmsofHope.org 12 Aggies are famous for their traditions, and the Aggies For Christ one we like best is their annual visit to our cam- puses. Every year in early January before the spring semester begins, we are blessed by a visit from a group of students representing Aggies for Christ. This year was no exception as we enjoyed hosting more than 40 Aggies who came ready to serve and perform all the work we could put before them. Not even snow and freezing weather could slow them down. While we are very thankful for the labor they provide help- ing out around the campuses, we are eternally grateful for the time they spent bonding with impact medina & Boles and loving on the children and families in our care. “Having the Aggies come back every year is such a special thing for us,” shared one AOH teenager. “They take time to get to know me and understand what I have been through. Their encouragement and concern assures me that I am not facing my struggles alone.” Our AOH children and families are not the only ones who benefit. “Spending a week at Arms of Hope has changed my life,” shared one Aggie. “Sharing tears, laughter and encouragement with hurting youth gives me new inspiration.”

The Medina Campus was blessed to provide the team Tquan Moore, a nationally acclaimed performing artist, with food and lodging on November 20th when they had entertained 150 Medina Campus residents and staff in a play-off game against Midland Christian at Tivy Sta- September. dium in Kerrville. 15 Reaching Generations - Spring 2011 Wayfaring Strangers Motorcycle Club brought forty members to Boles Campus and then rode five hours to the Medina Campus. They brought school supplies for the kids, prepared a meal for both campuses and spent time with Arms of Hope residents. vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv Arms of Hope-Medina Cam- pus thanks MacArthur Park Youth Group for coming out in January. Thirty teens worked alongside our resi- dents picking up trash. They also prepared a great lunch for the entire campus, played games and had a devotional with our children.

ACU Students Make A Difference The ACU agricultural department, led by Emmett Miller, brought 28 students to work on our Arms of Hope - Medina Campus for a weekend in October. They cleared cedar, painted, made homecom- ing mums and cooked dinner for the campus. This was the largest and hardest working group they have ever brought. Thank you, ACU students, for making a difference in the lives of our residents!

19 Reaching Generations - Spring 2011 Medina Campus Residents Participate in the Bandera County Jr. Livestock Show After spending months taking care of their animals, 15 children residing on the Medina Campus were able to show off their hard work at the Bandera County Jr. Livestock Show in January. Four students raised and showed pigs, and eleven students raised and showed lambs. Raising animals for the livestock show helps teach our children the importance of be- ing responsible and the value of having a strong work ethic. Our students were responsible for the daily care of their ani- mals including feeding, exercising, grooming and training for the show ring. These life lessons were reinforced as our chil- dren were able to enjoy the fruits of their labor by receiving the benefit of the profit realized by selling their animals. These students will now be able to learn how to be good stewards of these funds with the opportunity to manage the saving and spending of these proceeds on important things like education and necessities. A special thank you to Curtis Bedrich (pictured right), Barbara and George Sharman (pictured far right), Ike Crad- dock, Glenn Long (K&G Plaza Meat Market), Mandy Barton, Heath LeSturgeon Construction, Faglie Tree Service and Ce- dar Products, AOH donors and several members of the AOH staff for purchasing our residents’ animals at the sale.

Purchase a piece of Texas while helping Arms of Hope Giving a gift of appreciated real estate to Arms of Hope is a great way to leave a lasting legacy, but there are other benefits for you as well. In addition to ensuring that the lives of children and families in need will be permanently changed for the bet- ter, gifts of real estate can help you avoid paying capital gains tax and provide you with a charitable income tax deduction. One family recently chose to give Boles Children’s Home a beautiful piece of property on the Colorado River. Here it is, the perfect weekend getaway. Convenient to Austin, Houston and San Antonio, this stun- ning 151 acres is located on the Colorado River with about 1,149 feet of river frontage and has an Ag exemption. Enjoy hunting and fishing on your very own country hideaway. Pin Oak Creek, a strong creek, borders the property for about 9,000 feet and flows into the Colorado River. A great variety of trees including some huge pecan trees are in abundance on this land. This perfect place in the country can be yours for $906,000 ($6,000 per acre).
