The News Frontier The Space Race documented through front pages of newspapers from around North America Newspapers and patches generously donated to the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center by Jerrid Kenney After the end of World War II, a new battle began: the Cold War. In the mid-20th century, the United States and the Soviet Union were each trying to prove they were better than the other. Both sides wanted to show the superiority of their technology, military, and, by extension, their political systems. Starting in the late 1950s, the battlefront reached space. The United States and the Soviet Union fought to first achieve milestones in space exploration—starting in 1957 with the Soviet Union’s launch of Sputnik I, continuing through the U.S.’s landing astronauts on the Moon in 1969, and ending with a handshake in space between American astronauts and Soviet cosmonauts in 1975. Witness the fight for extraterrestrial might by reading about the United States and the Soviet Union’s major feats of the Space Race, as recorded in American and Canadian newspapers in real time. Hidden in Plain Sight: Northwest Impressionism, 1910-1935 John E. Impert A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2012 Reading Committee: Susan Casteras, Chair René Bravmann Douglas Collins Program authorized to Offer Degree: Art History University of Washington Abstract Hidden in Plain Sight: Northwest Impressionism, 1910-1935 John E. Impert Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Susan Casteras Art History Northwest Impressionist artists are among the forgotten figures in American art history. Responsible for bringing Modernism to Washington and Oregon, they dominated the art communities in Seattle and Portland from about 1910 to 1928, remaining influential until the mid 1930’s. After describing the artists briefly, this dissertation summarizes and evaluates the slim historiography of Northwest Impressionism. Impressionism and Tonalism are contrasted in order to situate these artists within the broad currents of American art history. Six important artists who have not been studied in the past are each accorded a chapter that summarizes their educations, careers, and artistic developments. In Seattle, Paul Gustin, the early leader of the Seattle art community, was most closely associated with images of Mount Rainier. Edgar Forkner, a well established Indiana artist, moved to Seattle and painted numerous canvases of old boats at rest and still lifes of flowers. Dorothy Dolph Jensen, a latecomer, emphasized shoreline and harbor scenes in her work. In Portland, Charles McKim traded complete anonymity in Portland, Maine for the leadership of the Oregon art community, creating a variety of landscapes and seascapes. Clyde Keller produced an enormous output of landscapes over a long career that extended to California as well as Oregon.

SMITHSONIAN STUDIES IN AIR AND SPACE • NUMBER 1 Astronaut Observations from the Apollo-Soyuz Mission Farouk El-Ba\ SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION PRESS City of Washington 1977 ABSTRACT EI-Baz, Farouk. Astronaut Observations from the Apollo-Soyuz Mission. Smithso nian Studies in Air and Space, number 1, 400 pages, 280 figures, 11 tables, 1977.— During the Gemini, Apollo, and Skylab flights, orbiting astronauts collected valua ble information by means of observations and photography of Earth. Strengthened by the experience gained on these flights, the Earth Observations and Photography Experiment was carried out as one of the American objectives of the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project in July 1975. The main goal of the experiment was to utilize the special capabilities of trained observers (namely, the American astronauts of the joint mis sion) in visually studying and photographing specific Earth features and dynamic phenomena. These special capabilities include the sensitivity of the human eye to subtle color variations (e.g., to desert sands or sea water), and the speed with which the eye-brain interaction results in interpretation of the scene and recognition of important features. This latter capability allows instantaneous selection of important sites for photographic documentation at any moment, which in turn, enhances the quality of photographic data from space platforms. Another goal of the experiment was to establish the role of human observers in future space programs, particularly the Space Shuttle. This book contains a detailed account of the experiment objectives, training of astronauts, preparation of aids for their use, and the results of experiment perform ance. These details serve as a historical-archival record and as a guide for conducting similar projects in the future.

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Wits Institutional Repository on DSPACE “DIRECTOR OF AUDIENCES”: A STUDY OF ALFRED HITCHCOCK’S MANIPULATION OF HIS AUDIENCES. Rebecca Webber (97 00 33 7X) A dissertation approved for the degree of Master of Arts by the University of the Witwatersrand. Johannesburg, 2007 Abstract This Master’s thesis identifies and elucidates upon the motifs/themes/images, which Hitchcock utilized in his films to ultimately manipulate and thereby direct his audience’s perception and understanding of his films’ narratives. The devices that are described and investigated in detail in this thesis are found to be recurrent in most of Alfred Hitchcock’s films. That highlights the question: why are they recurrent? What purpose do they serve? I believe that the answer to these questions is that these devices were used by Hitchcock to serve the end of manipulating the audience. The efficacy of these devices as used by Alfred Hitchcock is elaborated on in each chapter that addresses each motif in turn. Each chapter which deals with one of the motifs Alfred Hitchcock used in his manipulation of his audience contains examples from films and investigates how the motifs are used within each film to manipulate audience comprehension. These examples are strengthened with theory from academics, theorists and critics who have made a life-long study of Hitchcock. My theoretical framework includes audience research and Metz’s theory of ‘suturing’ which addresses the meaning of camera position and the different point of view that the audience take up.
