North Rhine-Westphalia has become increasingly attractive for foreign investors for several years. At the end of 2013, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia recorded a 29.9 percent investment share (197 billion EUR), the highest direct investment share of all 16 federal states in Germany (658 billion EUR). The next closest states are Hesse with 17.3 percent, Bavaria with 16.1 percent and Baden-Württemberg with 12.3 percent. Metropolitan Region in the Heart of Europe

North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) is located in the center of Europe and borders on the Netherlands and Belgium. It is the most populous and the most densely populated of the 16 federal states in Germany: 17.6 million people live on an area of 13,170 square miles (34,110 square kilometers). With 1,329 people per square mile (515 people per square kilometer), the state is more densely populated than Japan or the Netherlands. The largest cities are Cologne, Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Essen and Duisburg. The most important metropolitan areas are the Ruhr Metropolis (which includes Dortmund, Essen and Duisburg) with 5.1 million inhabitants and the Rhineland (which includes Cologne and Düsseldorf) with more than 3 million inhabitants. Around 160 million people live within a radius of 500 kilometers around the state capital Düsseldorf – this represents almost one third of all EU consumers. North Rhine-Westphalia enjoys an impressive variety of options for moving people and goods. Over 400 international direct flights to destinations around the world are available from six airports. The region has more than 3,700 miles (6,000 kilometers) of rail- roads and 1,400 miles (2,200 kilometers) of highways. There are approximately 450 miles (720 kilometers) of waterways with 120 ports – including the world’s largest inland port in Duisburg which handles 140 million tons (131 million metric tons) of goods per year. North Rhine-Westphalia is Germany’s state of highly qualified academics and skilled employees. The United States and North Rhine-Westphalia: A Deep-Rooted Partnership

North Rhine-Westphalia’s economic relations with the United States were established many decades ago and build on a much older relationship dating back as early as 1683 when Germans from the town of Krefeld along the Lower Rhine first settled in Philadelphia.

As the Rhine-Ruhr region became industrialized in the 19th century, its economic ties with the United States increased until the 1930s when Germany’s growing importance as a market for American products lead to American investment in the Rhine-Ruhr region. In 1931, the Ford Motor Company established its German headquarters in Cologne.

Following the Second World War, the industry and economy in the region recovered quickly with the support of the Marshall Plan and North Rhine-Westphalia became a major hub of American business in Europe. The U.S. Diplomatic Mission was based in Bonn, the capital of West Germany, from 1949 to 1999. When it moved with the capital of the reunified Germany to Berlin, it left behind a vast network of American connections in North Rhine-Westphalia encompassing institutions and people throughout the state. Today these economic ties are most extensive in the Rhineland and Ruhr region, but are also found in significant numbers in the Lower Rhine region.

First Choice for U.S. Investors in Germany

With a trade volume of 17.8 billion EUR, the United States is the seventh largest trade partner of North Rhine-Westphalia. Direct investments from the United States in North Rhine-Westphalia add up to 16.9 billion EUR.

Among the federal states in Germany, North Rhine-Westphalia has the highest percent- age of U.S. companies in Germany with 21.5 percent ahead of Bavaria (20.0 percent), Hesse (18.4 percent), and Baden-Württemburg (11.6 percent). More than 1,700 U.S. companies are based in North Rhine-Westphalia accounting for almost 175,000 employees, including renowned global players like 3M, Amazon, FedEx, Ford, Johnson Controls, QVC, and UPS, as well as a large number of small and medium-sized businesses.
