Het viel niet mee de radio af te stemmen op de juiste gol"engte, maar als dat lukte viel er tussen de ruis door genoeg te genieten. BBC Radio deed live verslag van de wedstrijden uit de hoogste Engelse voetbaldivisie en de twee Nederlanders speelden daarin vanaf dat moment een belangrijke rol. Mühren en !ijssen veranderden als balvaste, technische middenvelders de speelstijl van veel Engelse ploegen, maar in ieder geval van Ipswich Town, waar zij helden voor het leven zijn. Het was de tijd waarin het kleine Nottingham Forest twee keer achter elkaar de Europa Cup I won en de single We’ve got the whole world in our hands uitbracht. Het Engelse voetbal maakte hoogtijdagen door, terwijl Nederland juist in een dip zat. Nationale successen moesten vooral worden gezocht bij de buitenlandse clubs waar landgenoten voetbal- den. Mühren en !ijssen stelden daarin zelden teleur. Met Ipswich Town eindigden ze in 1980 en 1981 als tweede in 13 de toenmalige First Division, achter respectievelijk Aston Villa en Liverpool. Dat laatste jaar wonnen ze met de ploeg uit Su!olk de UEFA Cup, na een heroïsche weg naar de "nale. Zo werd Saint-Étienne gekleineerd en in feite kwam AZ er in de "nale ook niet aan te pas: 3-0 in Ipswich, 4-2 voor de Alkmaarders in het Olympisch Stadion. Frans #ijssen scoorde in beide wedstrijden. Een paar maanden eerder zag ik tv-beelden van de herdenking die Liverpool hield voor de overleden manager Bill Shankly. De passie van de Engelse voetbalsupporters liet me nooit meer los. In de jaren daarna volgde ik de hoogte- en dieptepunten uit het voetbal in Engeland op de voet. De brand in Bradford, het Heizeldrama en de Hillsborough-ramp blijven uiteraard onuitwisbaar in mijn geheugen, maar op voetbalgebied was er gelukkig ook veel moois te beleven. Manchester United kwam terug als Europese topclub, net als Arsenal, Chelsea en later Manchester City. Dennis Bergkamp maakte naam bij Arsenal, Ruud Gullit bij Chelsea, Jaap Stam en Ruud van Nistelrooy bij Manchester United en Jerrel Hasselbaink overal waar hij speelde. Ik genoot van de fratsen van Vinnie Jones, Paul Gascoigne, Eric Cantona en Mario Balotelli, maar ook van de ploegen uit de lagere divisies. En ieder jaar weer kijk ik uit naar de magie van de strijd om de FA Cup, het mooiste bekertoernooi ter wereld. Vele wedstrijden 14 bezocht ik inmiddels, van de Premier League tot in League Two. Prachtige stadions en stadionnetjes, een pint en een pie; het gaat nooit vervelen. De passie van de fans speelde een voorname rol bij het schrijven van de verhalen en columns die in dit boek zijn verzameld. De meeste verhalen zijn eerder in iets aangepaste vorm verschenen in Voetbal International, de columns op de website vi.nl. Daarom is bij alle hoofdstukken een publica- tiedatum vermeld. Indien van toepassing heb ik onder het hoofdstuk een korte update toegevoegd. Enkele verhalen zijn nieuw. Een boek over the beautiful game en de passie voor voetbal in Engeland. Dit boek is een verzameling van de beste verhalen en columns, aangevuld met enkele nieuwe verhalen. Over de gedrevenheid van Alex Ferguson, het verdriet van Arsène Wenger, de zus van Roberto Di Matteo en de tijd dat Manchester City nog een volksclub was. Over de zelfspot van Brian Clough, de heimwee van Paul Gascoigne en de rijke historie van Liverpool, Stoke City en Queens Park Rangers. Maar ook over de goals van Robin van Persie, het haar van Wayne Rooney en het bed van George Best. Beschreven met oog voor detail en de nodige humor. In het boek komen veel Nederlanders aan het woord die bij een Engelse club hun geld verdienen of er in het verleden onder contract hebben gestaan, onder wie John Heitinga, Tim Krul, Ron Vlaar, Karim El Ahmadi, George Boateng, Frans Thijssen, Arjan de Zeeuw, Peter Hoekstra en Swansea City-directeur John van Zweden. As well as a lot of awful footballer autobiographies. In this crowded market it’s important to try to make your book leap from the crowd like Sergio Ramos at a corner and demand attention. A catchy, interesting title can help significantly with that. On the other hand, if you’re a footballer, you’re already instantly recognisable to anybody who might buy and read it anyway, and you have access to a loyal fanbase that consistently proves itself willing to part with hard-earned money for any old rubbish they are served up (bad performances, third kits, club shop tat etc.), so why bother? And not bothering is very much the watchword for many players who clearly think that a nice snap and a simple title will do. Hence the plethora of ‘My Story’, ‘My Life in Football’ or ‘My Autobiography’ efforts clogging up the shelves. Surely we can do better than that? We’re not saying everyone needs to call their book Snod This for a Laugh,1 but come on.

We find that some managerial changes are successful, while others are counterproductive. On average, performance does not improve following a managerial replacement. The successfulness of managerial turnover depends on specific highly unpredictable circumstances, as we illustrate through case-studies. In other continents, interest has increased in the past decades. Both clubs and national associations employ top-class managers from all around the globe to coach their squads. Furthermore, top clubs have an enormous global fan base. The great interest in football is not restricted to fans seeking entertainment. Professional sports, in general, and professional football, in particular, have proven to be a fruitful soil for scientific research.

They met as young players – Brian a centre-forward and Peter a goalkeeper – at Middlesbrough FC, where they played together for six years. With a shared passion for the beautiful game they formed a friendship that would take them to the very top of English and European football. They first joined forces as managers at Hartlepool United but it was at Derby County where the dynamic duo, as they were known, had their first taste of the big time. Many of Derby's greatest names were signed in the Clough-Taylor era: Roy McFarland, John O'Hare, Alan Hinton, John McGovern, Willie Carlin, Dave Mackay, Colin Todd and Archie Gemmill to name a few.
