Glenn Miller Orchestra brings serenade sounds to UCSD's Price Center Ballroom at 8 P.M. March 8 February 13, 1998 Media Contact: Ruth Baily at University Events, (619) 534-0497, [email protected] or Jan Jennings, (619) 822-1684, [email protected] GLENN MILLER ORCHESTRA BRINGS SERENADE SOUNDS TO UCSD'S PRICE CENTER BALLROOM AT 8 P.M. MARCH 8 The classic sounds of Moonlight Serenade will fill the Price Center at the University of California, San Diego when the Glenn Miller Orchestra performs March 8 beginning at 8 p.m. The most sought after Big Band in the world, constantly on the road, the Glenn Miller Orchestra returns to UCSD after two years, and now, as then, invites easy listening, and better yet, dancing in the Price Center Ballroom. Trombonist Larry O'Brien directs the 19-member band including five saxophone players, four trumpeters, four trombonists, three rhythm musicians (piano, bass and drums) and two vocalists. The results original Glenn Miller arrangements, as well as modern selections, many of them in the big-band style. "Mostly we play the old songs," says O'Brien. "We manage to insert new ones from time to time, but these are songs that lend themselves to the Miller sound." In addition to Miller's theme song, Moonlight Serenade, originally written by the musician as an exercise for a course in arranging long before he organized his band in 1938, golden oldies include Stardust, Rhapsody in Blue, A String of Pearls, Tangerine, The Nearness of You, Come Rain or Come Shine, Begin the Beguine and Chattanooga Choo Choo.

  • History of Jazz Tenor Saxophone Black Artists
HISTORY OF JAZZ TENOR SAXOPHONE BLACK ARTISTS 1940 – 1944 SIMPLIFIED EDITION INTRODUCTION UPDATE SIMPLIFIED EDITION I have decided not to put on internet the ‘red’ Volume 3 in my Jazz Solography series on “The History of Jazz Tenor Saxophone – Black Artists 1940 – 1944”. Quite a lot of the main performers already have their own Jazz Archeology files. This volume will only have the remainders, and also auxiliary material like status reports, chronology, summing ups, statistics, etc. are removed, to appear later in another context. This will give better focus on the many good artists who nevertheless not belong to the most important ones. Jan Evensmo June 22, 2015 INTRODUCTION ORIGINAL EDITION What is there to say? That the period 1940 - 1944 is a most exciting one, presenting the tenorsax giants of the swing era in their prime, while at the same time introducing the young, talented modern innovators. That this is the last volume with no doubt about the contents, we know what is jazz and what is not. Later it will not be that easy! That the recording activities grow decade by decade, thus this volume is substantially thicker than the previous ones. Just wait until Vol. 4 appears ... That the existence of the numerous AFRS programs partly compensates for the unfortunate recording ban of 1943. That there must be a lot of material around not yet generally available and thus not listed in this book. Please help building up our jazz knowledge base, and share your treasures with the rest of us. That we should remember and be eternally grateful to the late Jerry Newman, whose recording activities at Minton's and Monroe's have given us valuable insight into the developments of modern jazz.

  • The Nearness of You Sweet Sassy Music SSM-1001 Street Date October 1, 2005
Jazz Promo Services Sarah DeLeo – The Nearness of You Sweet Sassy Music SSM-1001 Street Date October 1, 2005 Sarah DeLeo’s debut CD, The Nearness of You, is an up close and personal look at a talented young vocalist who brings her own personality and perspective to a pleasing program of classics from the Great American Songbook. Accompanied by a first class cast of musicians, including her coproducer Brian Charette on piano, David Cook on Fender Rhodes, Chris Bergson on guitar, Mark Verdino on bass, Diego Voglino on drums and Chuck Mackinnon on trumpet, DeLeo breathes new life into these wonderful songs with a pretty voice and a distinctive delivery that makes the words she sings seem like they were written just for her. DeLeo begins the date with a fresh new interpretation of “If I Had You,” a song she first heard in high school on a Judy Garland recording from the thirties. Not wanting to do the song as a ballad, she eventually decided to try it as a bossa nova. The rhythm works well with the lyric and melody, conveying a feeling that is, in the words of the singer, “romantic and a little wistful, but ultimately hopeful.” Brian Charette’s piano accompaniment gives the music an authentic Brazilian feel, reminiscent of the swinging sounds of Sergio Mendes’ Brazil 66. Peggy Lee’s “It’s a Good Day” proves to be a perfect vehicle for DeLeo’s sweet, full-bodied voice and nuanced phrasing. Her rubato opening chorus convincingly conveys the melancholy mood of the ironic lyric, before she gradually picks up the tempo and begins gently swinging the song as a jazz waltz, transforming the feeling to one of cheerfulness.

Basie leaned on a counter, relieving his legs of the weight, and was matter-of-fact, apparently not enjoying COUNT WILLIAM BASIE being interviewed. The Interview Capsule BBJ: How did your theme, ONE O’CLOCK JUMP originate? CB: Well, that started in Kansas City.
