Language of Material: While most of the collection is in English, there is also a significant amount of Hungarian text, as well as printed material in German, Italian, Japanese, and other languages. Special Collections and University Archives materials are stored offsite and must be paged 36 hours in advance. Biographical / Historical Artist, designer, and visual theorist György Kepes was born in 1906 in Selyp, Hungary. Originally associated with Germany’s Bauhaus as a colleague of László Moholy-Nagy, he emigrated to the United States in 1937 to teach Light and Color at Moholy's New Bauhaus (soon to be called the Institute of Design) in Chicago. In 1944, he produced Language of Vision, a landmark book about design theory, followed by the publication of six Kepes-edited anthologies in a series called Vision + Value as well as several other books. -

Ample margins. Very fine printing quality. Very good to fine condition. Image size: 8 1/8 x 7 7/8 in. (206 x 200 mm). Authorized and supervised by Koppitz shortly before his death in 1936. [25832-2-800] 2: CLEMENTINE HUNTER - Zinnias in a Blue Pot USD 3,500 - 4,000 Clementine Hunter (American, 1886/1887-1988). "Zinnias in a Blue Pot". Gouache on paper. c1973. Signed lower right. Very good to fine condition; would be fine save a few very small paint spots, upper rght. Overall size: 15 3/8 x 11 3/4 in. (391 x 298 mm). Clementine Reuben Hunter, a self-taught African-American folk artist, was born at Hidden Hill, a cotton plantation close to Cloutierville, Louisiana. When she was 14 she moved to the Melrose Plantation in Cane River County. She is often referred to as "the black Grandma Moses." Her works in gouache are rare. The last auction record of her work in that medium that we could find was "Untitled," sold for $3,000 at Sotheby's New York, 12/19/2003, lot 1029. Rendering Rhythm and Motion in the Art of Black Mountain College
A Lasting Imprint Rendering Rhythm and Motion in the Art of Black Mountain College Movement and music—both time-based activities—can be difficult to express in static media such as painting, drawing, and photography, yet many visual artists feel called to explore them. Some are driven to devise new techniques or new combinations of media in order to capture or suggest movement. Similarly, some visual artists utilize elements found in music—rhythms, patterns, repetitions, and variations—to endow their compositions with new expressive potency. In few places did movement, music, visual arts, and myriad other disciplines intermingle with such profound effect as they did at Black Mountain College (BMC), an experiment in higher education in the mountains of Western North Carolina that existed from 1933 to 1957. For many artists, their introduction to interdisciplinarity at the college resulted in a continued curiosity around those ideas throughout their careers. The works in the exhibition, selected from the Asheville Art Museum’s Black Mountain College Collection, highlight approaches to rendering a lasting imprint of the ephemeral. Artists such as Barbara Morgan and Clemens Kalischer seek to capture the motion of the human form, evoking a sense of elongated or contracted muscles, or of limbs moving through space. Others, like Lorna Blaine Halper or Sewell Sillman, approach the challenge through abstraction, foregoing representation yet communicating an atmosphere of dynamic change. Marianne Preger-Simon’s drawings of her fellow dancers at BMC from summer 1953 are not only portraits but also a dance of pencil on paper, created in the spirit of BMC professor Josef Albers’s line studies as she simultaneously worked with choreographer Merce Cunningham. -

Long synopsis At the time of his death in 2006, Harry Seidler was Australia's best-known architect. The Sydney Morning Herald carried a banner headline "HOW HE DEFINED SYDNEY" and there were obituaries in the London and the New York Times. Lord Richard Rogers, of Paris Pompidou Center fame, describes him as one of the world's great mainstream modernists. This film charts the life and career of Harry Seidler through the eyes of those that knew him best; his wife of almost fifty years Penelope Seidler; his co-workers including Colin Griffiths and Peter Hirst who were by his side over four decades; and several well-placed architectural commentators and experts including three laureates of the highest honour the world architectural community bestows, the Pritzker Prize: Lord Norman Foster, Lord Richard Rogers and our own Glenn Murcutt. -
