Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips January 9, 2018 Sabres call up defenseman Guhle, goalie Ullmark from AHL Associated Press Jan. 8, 2018 BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The Buffalo Sabres have called up top defensive prospect Brendan Guhle and goalie Linus Ullmark from their American Hockey League affiliate. The call-ups were made Monday, a day after Buffalo closed out seven straight games on the road with a 4-1 loss at Philadelphia. The Sabres host Winnipeg on Tuesday. Guhle has seven goals and 13 assists for 20 points in 35 games in his first season with Rochester. He was Buffalo’s second- round pick in the 2015 draft and played three games with the Sabres during the 2016 season on an emergency call-up basis. Ullmark is tied for the AHL lead with 17 wins and ranks fourth with a .928 save percentage this season. He is 8-11-2 in 21 NHL career games. Sabres reward Guhle as defense prospect continues his growth The Buffalo News By John Vogl January 8, 2018 Brendan Guhle is putting his faith in the Buffalo Sabres' development plan. If they feel the defenseman should be in Rochester, that's fine by him. If they want to give him a chance in Buffalo, that's obviously a nice bonus. It's time to cash in that bonus. The Sabres have recalled their top defense prospect, and he's expected to be in the lineup Tuesday when Winnipeg visits KeyBank Center. "They said I earned the recall, and I'll just play my best," said Guhle, who joined the Sabres for Monday's practice.

  • Trio Has Super Time in Minneapolis on Super Sunday
Winnipeg Free Press https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/sports/hockey/jets/trio-has-super-time-in-minneapolis-on- super-sunday-472850603.html Trio has super time in Minneapolis on Super Sunday By: Mike McIntyre Three members of the Winnipeg Jets had a truly super Sunday. Mark Scheifele, Andrew Copp and Jacob Trouba took advantage of an off-day and made the quick trip to Minneapolis to watch the Philadelphia Eagles beat the New England Patriots 41-33 in Super Bowl LII. "Unbelievable," Scheifele said Monday following practice. "Obviously lucky that it was in Minnesota, we had a day off. I surprised my brother and my best friend with their Christmas gifts — they got to come to the Super Bowl. And then Copper and Troubs came, too. It’s definitely something to cross off the bucket list and something that I’ll never forget." They took an early morning flight, soaked up the atmosphere before and during the game, and then caught a late-night flight home. Copp, a former high school quarterback in Michigan, said it was a "once-in-a-lifetime experience" and marvelled at getting to watch New England quarterback Tom Brady in action — even if it was in a losing effort. "It was a crazy game. There wasn’t much more Tom could have done — maybe catch the ball — but he was unbelievable," Copp said. "I turned to (Trouba) a few times and it was just like, ‘Wow, he’s playing one of the best games of his career, probably.’ And then (Philadelphia quarterback Nick) Foles made some great throws, too, so it was definitely an entertaining back- and-forth game." Copp and Scheifele didn’t hide their rooting interests, sporting Brady jerseys.

  • Maurice Needs to Solve Jets' Defensive Deficiencies
Winnipeg Free Press https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/sports/hockey/jets/maurice-needs-to-solve-jets-defensive- deficiencies-451756153.html Maurice needs to solve Jets' defensive deficiencies By: Scott Campbell The Columbus Blue Jackets didn’t leave it to chance on Tuesday, totally dismantling the Winnipeg Jets in every area of the game, winning 5-2 and ending the Jets’ three-game win streak. After being blown out in the first two games because of atrocious defensive-zone work, Jets head coach Paul Maurice restored order by having his players collapse to the middle of the ice in the defensive zone. Considering what we had watched, I didn’t blame him. Attempting to establish positioning they could hold — and keep the play to the outside as much as possible — made sense to me, even though it’s not a favourite of mine. Sometimes, drastic measures are needed. Backboned by stellar play from goalie Connor Hellebuyck, three wins followed. Let’s throw out the Columbus game and look at those wins and the system. The problem moving forward is that while certain types of chances against are lessened, it also traumatizes the Jets’ ability to transition and go on the attack, taking advantage of their quick- strike power and high-end talent. That talent still holds in these low-event games Maurice wants them to play, but to alesser extent as you’re also producing fewer chances to score. We saw that during their winning streak — the wins over the Vancouver Canucks and Carolina Hurricanes were tight games. The Jets won 4-2 against Vancouver (with an empty-netter) but were outshot 32-20.

Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips December 31, 2019 Playoff-bound Bills force Sabres’ scheduling change Saturday By John Wawrow Associated Press December 30, 2019 BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Buffalo Bills and Sabres fans need not worry. They’ll get a chance to see both of their teams play Saturday. The Sabres announced their home game against the Florida Panthers has been moved to 1 p.m. to alleviate any conflict with the Bills playing at Houston in an AFC wild-card game at 4:35 p.m. The Sabres game was initially set to start at 7 p.m., which would have overlapped with the end of the Bills game. The change was made Monday, a day after the NFL released its playoff schedule, and made easier because the Bills and Sabres are both owned by Terry and Kim Pegula. Kim Pegula thanked the Panthers for agreeing to the time change. Florida will be in the midst of a four-game road trip, and has a day off before playing at Buffalo. The Panthers then travel to play Pittsburgh on Sunday. “Buffalo has a great tradition of all of our teams and fans supporting each other,” Kim Pegula said. “And we want to make sure we can accommodate everyone the best way possible.” The game against the Panthers is notable, because the Sabres are welcoming back more than 20 alumni from their 1990s teams as part of the franchise’s year-long 50th anniversary celebration.
