from Dean Rebecca Hanner White

The law school community enjoys the opportunity each year to recognize and to thank publicly the many alumni and friends who contribute so generously to Georgia Law. This annual report of donors reflects the commitment of these alumni and friends to providing the needed financial support to Georgia Law that enables us to excel in providing the finest legal education available.

Your support to the school plays an increasingly important role in our ability to prepare law students to be skilled and ethical problem solvers and advocates in a rapidly changing world. Your gifts strengthen our academic programs, allow us to hire and retain outstanding faculty and to recruit and enroll exceptionally talented students.

I am pleased to share with you that this past year more than $1.7 million was contributed to the law school, and this does not include pledges received but not yet paid. In light of the continuing budget reductions by the state, this level of support from our alumni and friends is gratifying. To those of you making your initial gift of support to the law school, I thank you, and I hope that I will have the opportunity to thank you again next year. To those of you who have continued to provide annual support (and in many instances increased support), I have a deeper appreciation of your loyalty and commitment to your law school and am grateful for it.

I invite you to visit the law school and to see for yourself the difference alumni and friends, who care about this school and its future, can make when they provide the school with critical private support. In the meantime, I am always available to discuss the law school’s needs with you. You may reach me at (706) 542-7140 or [email protected].

Sincerely,

Rebecca Hanner White Dean and J. Alton Hosch Professor of Law In Brief 2003-2004

The School of Law is pleased to honor its annual contributors of $1,000 or more with membership in the Joseph Henry Lumpkin Society and greatly appreciates the commitment of these individuals to the continuous advancement of the quality of the law school. Lumpkin Society membership reached a new high in 2003-2004 with 236 generous alumni and friends of the School of Law making gifts of $1,000 or more. In addition, we received gifts of $1,000 or more from 20 private foundations and corporations.

Joseph Henry Lumpkin founded the University of Georgia School of Law in 1859, in collaboration with his son-in-law, Thomas R.R. Cobb, and colleague, William Hope Hull. Classes were first taught in Lumpkin’s law office at the corner of Prince Avenue and Pulaski Street in downtown Athens at what was then the Lumpkin Law School. Lumpkin, born in Oglethorpe County in 1799, was a distinguished lawyer and statesman and a major figure in Georgia public affairs. He graduated from Princeton in 1819, then “read law” under the tutelage of a practicing attorney, as was the custom of the day. Lumpkin was admitted to the Georgia bar in 1820. In 1824, he was elected to a two-year term in the Georgia legislature and in 1833, he helped frame the state penal code. In 1845, Lumpkin became the first chief justice of the Georgia Supreme Court, where he served continuously until his death in 1867. You can join the Lumpkin Society and help sustain excellence at your law school. Please make your gift of $1,000 or more to the School of Law by June 30, 2005, and encourage several of your classmates and colleagues to follow your lead so that our Lumpkin Society membership can reach new heights again this year.

Listed below in italics are alumni and friends who have generously given to Georgia Law at the Joseph Henry Lumpkin Society level for a minimum of five consecutive years.

DR.S.V.SANFORD Chancellor, University System of Georgia, 1935-45 How Your Money Is Spent

In the 2003-04 academic year, the majority (74%) of your contribution to the Law School Fund directly benefited law school students, particularly in the area of scholarship assistance. Each year, Georgia Law relies on annual contributions from its alumni and friends to provide essential operating dollars. Approximately $500,000 in contributions to the Law School Fund is needed for the 2005-06 academic year.

Think of the Law School Fund as your annual salary – you have to earn it before you spend it. Dollars raised this fiscal year are spent next fiscal year. Our fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30. All expenditures are approved through an itemized budget request presented to the Law School Association Council and voted on by the greater Georgia Law alumni body each year during our annual meeting.

Please contact the law school’s development office at (706) 542-7639 or [email protected] to make your gift today.

I am honored to address you on behalf of the Law School Association. At Georgia Law, we are fortunate to have some of the finest faculty, administrators, staff and students of any law school in the country. Our law school could not have reached its level of success without the support of a group of which I am most proud to belong - its alumni.

Each of us has benefitted directly from the education we received at Georgia Law. The time we spent in law school may have been tough, but it prepared us to succeed in the years following our graduation. As alumni, we have an obli- gation to the next generation of law school students, and this annual donor report recognizes our many alumni who 2004-05 Law School Association Council (back, l. to r.) Henry C.Tharpe, Jr., have done so much to meet this obligation. At-Large State Representative; Gregory C. Sowell, District 2 Representative; S.Alan Cohn, District 9 Representative; Daniel B. Rucker,At-Large Out-of-State Representative; John L. Carr, Jr., The need for alumni contributions is greater than ever. At-Large Out-of-State Representative. State budget cuts over the last few years have directly affected the law school. In this economic climate, private gifts assume an even greater role in helping to maintain the law school’s position as a leading legal learning institution.

I want to thank each of you who regularly contribute to the Law School Fund. To those of you who have not contributed or who may not have contributed recently, I encourage you to join me and other alumni in making a financial commitment to sup- port our alma mater. A gift at the $1,000 level entitles the donor to special recognition as a member of the Joseph Henry Lumpkin Society.

Also, please join us at the Law School Association functions held in conjunction with the State Bar of Georgia’s Midyear Meeting in Atlanta on January 13 and 14, 2005. The LSA will be hosting our traditional alumni reception on Thursday evening and the alumni breakfast on Friday morning. Further details will be forthcoming in the bar’s informational mailing. I hope to see you there.

I know our law school is a source of pride for each of us. If you have any comments or if you have any questions about what is occurring at the law school, I hope you will let me know at (706) 722-4481 or [email protected].

Sincerely,

James B. Ellington (’87) Law School Association President 24 2003-04 Class Participation
