Sal Bando, Jr., is in his third season at the helm of the High Point University baseball program, and is one of the nation’s youngest NCAA Division I coaches at 33 years of age. Please Type or Print Clearly Clearly Print Please Type or HHIGH PPOINT PPANTHER Bando has a two-year record at HPU of 40-68 and a six-year career record of 142-156.

Bando was hired in the spring of 2001 and inherited a Panther program that was in a rather precarious situation. The Panthers were coming off a 21-33 season (the team’s 11th-straight losing season and third as an NCAA Division I member). With an inherited club, Bando guided the 2002 Panthers to a 26-31 season, their best finish in over a decade and most wins as a Division I member. The 2002 season also marked the end of High Point’s 11 year-drought without a signee. The Panther Baseball team produced two professional

players in the last two years.

Prior to HPU, Bando served as head coach at NCAA Division II Wisconsin-Parkside, where he had the similar challenge of rebuilding a program that was down and out. In 1998 he inherited a team that went 9-31, and within three seasons helped the Rangers over the 30-win mark and set a school record for victories in consecutive seasons. The program saw steady improvement under Bando’s guidance, improving from 12-30 in 1998 to 21-23 in 1999, 31-17 in

Resident / Commuter Session I Session Commuter / Resident 2000, and 38-18 in 2001. The 2000 squad began the year a school-record 13-0 and earned the program’s first national ranking, while the 2001 club made UWP’s first ever post-season appearance.

As a player, Bando has experienced a lot. He began his collegiate career under Jerry Kindal at the University of Arizona. He was a member of the 1989 Six-Pac Championship team that hosted an NCAA regional, was ranked as high as second in the country, and included the likes of Trevor Hoffman, Scott Erickson, J.T. Snow, and two other first round picks. In 1990 he transferred to Pima Community College in Tucson, Ariz., and was a member of a state championship team. Following a red shirt season in 1991, Bando headed to the state of Colorado, where he played at Colorado State in 1992. After the Rams disbanded their program,

2004 A Bando landed at Oklahoma State in 1993 and finished his collegiate career under hitting guru Gary Ward. He earned All-Big Eight honors and helped the Cowboys win their 13th consecutive Big 8 title, an NCAA regional championship, and a trip to the College World B A S E B A L L C A M P S Series, finishing 4th in the country. After college Bando signed a free agent contract with the

PPLICATION St. Louis Cardinals and spent two years in their organization, playing in the New York-Penn and Midwest Leagues. His pro career was highlighted by yet another championship, in 1994, with the New Jersey Cardinals.

Baseball is in Bando’s blood. He grew up watching his father, Sal Bando, Sr., play for 16 seasons in the major leagues with the Oakland A’s and , and from 1972-74 captain the A’s to three consecutive World Series Championships. After his playing days, the

DO NOTFILL IN: Phil Maier is in his third season on the Panther coaching staff and sixth with head coach Sal Bando. Maier serves as the pitching and catching coach, recruiter, and field maintenance coordinator. DAY CAMP - SESSION II In Maier’s first year, he inherited a pitching staff that had a team ERA of 6.78, an opponents TH TH RADE UNE batting average of .326, 253 strikeouts and 218 walks, for a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 1.16/1. 6 - 8 G J 14 - 17, 2004 Maier’s presence was felt immediately, as virtually the same staff improved in 2002 to a team ERA of 5.97, an opponents batting average of .319, with 330 strikeouts and 165 walks, for a ratio of 2/1. Overnight Team Camp

Amount Paid:______Prior to High Point, Maier spent four years as the pitching coach at NCAA Division II Wisconsin-Parkside. Under his tutelage, the pitching staff finished second in the nation in team ERA in consecutive years, with a 2.58 ERA in 2000 and a 2.91 ERA in 2001. More impressive than that accomplishment is that between both record setting staffs, no one was drafted and only one pitcher earned all-American status. Maier was able to get an “average” group talent wise to pitch and perform.
