  • APPROVED PLANT LIST Midtown Alliance Tree Well Adoption Program
APPROVED PLANT LIST Midtown Alliance Tree Well Adoption Program Midtown Alliance launched the Tree Well Adoption program with the primary goal of enriching the experience of Midtown’s workers and residents while encouraging sustainability through the use of low-water, urban tolerant plant species. This list of plants was created to aid individuals and organizations in selecting plant material to plant in their adopted tree wells. This plant list is intended to encourage individual character in the tree wells, rather than restrict creativity in the selection of plants. The plants on the approved list were selected based on the following criteria: • Perennial. All plants listed are perennial, meaning they last for two or more growing seasons. Once established, these plants will require less water to maintain than annuals. • Heat tolerant. Plants in tree wells are exposed to high temperatures caused by vehicles and heat reflected from surrounding buildings, asphalt, and other urban surfaces. They must also be tolerant to high daytime temperatures, typical of Atlanta’s summer months, and cold hardy in the winter months. Atlanta is located in USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7b/8a. • Water wise. Urban tree wells are surrounded by impervious surfaces and thus, are highly susceptible to periods of drought. Suitable plants must be able to survive periods of low rainfall. • Pollution tolerant. Vehicle exhaust may leave deposits and pollutants on plant foliage, which can kill sensitive plants. • Encourage wildlife. Flowering plants attract insects such as butterflies while others provide food sources for birds and other wildlife. • Grown locally. Many of the plants listed are native to the Atlanta area, and all can be found at local nurseries.

  • The Construction of Anti-Physical Culture by Chinese Dynasts Using Confucianism and the Civil Service Examination
PHYSICAL CULTURE AND SPORT. STUDIES AND RESEARCH DOI: 10.2478/v10141-011-0004-x Be a Sedentary Confucian Gentlemen: The Construction of Anti-Physical Culture by Chinese Dynasts Using Confucianism and the Civil Service Examination Junwei Yu National Taiwan College of Physical Education, Taiwan ABSTRACT Although there has been a growing body of research that explores Chinese masculinities within imperial China, the connection between masculinity and physical culture has been neglected. In this article, the author argues that Chinese emperors used Confucianism and the civil service examination ( keju ) to rule the country, and at the same time, created a social group of sedentary gentlemen whose studiousness and bookishness were worshiped by the public. In particular, the political institution of keju played a crucial role in disciplining the body. Behavior that did not conform to the Confucian standards which stressed civility and education were considered barbaric. As a result, a wen -version of masculinity was constructed. In other words, an anti- physical culture that strengthened the gross contempt towards those who chose to engage in physical labor. KEYWORDS China, confucianism, gentleman, physical culture, civil service examination Current Western ideals of how men should behave have dominated the standard setting discourse against which other forms of masculinity are measured and evaluated. Set against the ‘macho’ stereotype circulating in the West, images of Chinese men do not conform to this type of masculinity, and the same associations of manliness do not exist. Yet pre-modern Chinese have nonetheless sought to define the normative ideal of male behavior, as this article will demonstrate. Therefore, masculinity is never a monolithic concept.

Weeks, Dendrologist Department of Forestry and Natural Resources Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN 47907 This publication is available in color at http://www.ces.purdue.edu/extmedia/fnr.htm Introduction When most Midwesterners think of a magnolia, images of the grand, evergreen southern magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora) (Figure 1) usually come to mind. Even those familiar with magnolias tend to think of them as occurring only in the South, where a more moderate climate prevails. Seven species do indeed thrive, especially in the southern Appalachian Mountains. But how many Hoosiers know that there are two native species Figure 2. Cucumber magnolia when planted will grow well throughout Indiana. In Charles Deam’s Trees of Indiana, the author reports “it doubtless occurred in all or nearly all of the counties in southern Indiana south of a line drawn from Franklin to Knox counties.” It was mainly found as a scattered, woodland tree and considered very local. Today, it is known to occur in only three small native populations and is listed as State Endangered Figure 1. UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles The How and Why of Urban Preservation: Protecting Historic Neighborhoods in China A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Urban Planning by Jonathan Stanhope Bell 2014 © Copyright by Jonathan Stanhope Bell 2014 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION The How and Why of Preservation: Protecting Historic Neighborhoods in China by Jonathan Stanhope Bell Doctor of Philosophy in Urban Planning University of California, Los Angeles, 2014 Professor Anastasia Loukaitou-Sideris, Chair China’s urban landscape has changed rapidly since political and economic reforms were first adopted at the end of the 1970s. Redevelopment of historic city centers that characterized this change has been rampant and resulted in the loss of significant historic resources. Despite these losses, substantial historic neighborhoods survive and even thrive with some degree of integrity. This dissertation identifies the multiple social, political, and economic factors that contribute to the protection and preservation of these neighborhoods by examining neighborhoods in the cities of Beijing and Pingyao as case studies. One focus of the study is capturing the perspective of residential communities on the value of their neighborhoods and their capacity and willingness to become involved in preservation decision-making. The findings indicate the presence of a complex interplay of public and private interests overlaid by changing policy and economic limitations that are creating new opportunities for public involvement. Although the Pingyao case study represents a largely intact historic city that is also a World Heritage Site, the local ii focus on tourism has disenfranchised residents in order to focus on the perceived needs of tourists.

  • Use of Natural Colours in the Ice Cream Industry
USE OF NATURAL COLOURS IN THE ICE CREAM INDUSTRY Dr. Juan Mario Sanz Penella Dr. Emanuele Pedrazzini Dr. José García Reverter SECNA NATURAL INGREDIENTS GROUP Definition of ice cream Ice cream is a frozen dessert, a term that includes different types of product that are consumed frozen and that includes sorbets, frozen yogurts, non-dairy frozen desserts and, of course, ice cream. In order to simplify its classification, we can consider for practical purposes two different types of frozen desserts: ice cream and sorbets. Ice cream includes all products that have a neutral pH and contain dairy ingredients. While sorbet refers to products with an acidic pH, made with water and other ingredients such as fruit, but without the use of dairy. Additionally, when referring to ice cream, we are not referring to a single type of product, we are actually referring to a wide range of these. Ice cream is a food in which the three states of matter coexist, namely: water in liquid form and as ice crystals, sugars, fats and proteins in solid form and occluded air bubbles in gaseous form, Figure 1. Artisanal ice creams based on natural ingredients which give it its special texture. It should be noted that ice cream is a very complete food from a nutritional point of view since it incorporates in its formulation a wide range of ingredients (sugars, milk, fruits, egg products ...) essential for a balanced diet. Another aspect of great relevance in the manufacture of ice cream is the hedonic factor. Ice cream is consumed mainly for the pure pleasure of tasting it, the hedonic component being the main factor that triggers its consumption, considering its formulation and design a series of strategies to evoke a full range of sensations: gustatory, olfactory, visual and even, of the touch and the ear.
