You could always tell when Frank Young was in the office at In 1989, in partnership with Marilynn Sheldon and a number The 5th Avenue Theatre because his big booming voice would of Seattle business leaders, Young helped re-form The 5th echo down the hallways. He provided the artistic leadership with purpose and wearing a cowboy hat, rain or shine. On for over a decade in both Houston and Seattle. In Wednesday, September 20, 2017, the national arts legend and 2000, he felt it was time for the company to have an artistic 5th Avenue Theatre Association co-founder passed away. director who could focus his energies exclusively on The 5th and David Armstrong was soon appointed. Frank Young truly devoted his life to musical theater and was integral in shaping the face of regional musical theater today. Young’s influence and dedication to his art form will be missed. He founded Houston’s legendary Theatre Under the Stars Our hearts go out to his friends and family and the entire (TUTS) in 1968 and it is still thriving 50 years later. Houston community for their loss.

“Frank Young will be dearly missed in our musical theater industry and I’m not sure he can ever be replaced. For The 5th, he brought a formula of producing and presenting musicals that grew a 12,000 person subscription to 30,000 in a three year period. He was a producer, presenter, director, conductor, musician and actor. He was a business partner, a colleague and a friend for 25 years. He was an inspiration, a kind and brilliant person and a man who was widely respected in the musical theater industry. Frank Young lived and breathed musical theater and I will miss him.”

– Marilynn Sheldon, Founding Managing Director of The 5th Avenue Theatre

“My life was changed immeasurably when Frank hired me to direct a production of The Secret Garden at The 5th Avenue Theatre in 1999. That acclaimed production began a process that culminated in me moving to Seattle to become The 5th’s first full time artistic director. In October, I had the honor of re- mounting The 5th’s 2017 production of The Secret Garden at TUTS. On the second day of rehearsal, I learned Frank had died. It was sad, but also comforting to be working on this particular show at the theater company that Frank had founded nearly 50 years ago. Frank had a tremendous impact on so many people involved in American musical theater. The 5th Avenue Theatre would not be what it is today without his vision and abilities.”

– David Armstrong, Executive Producer & Artistic Director of The 5th Avenue Theatre

BEHIND THE SCENES: HOLIDAY INN TARYN DARR as Lila Dixon “I remember exactly where I was when I got my first offer at The 5th,” says Taryn Darr. “I was home for Christmas in Gresham, Oregon. I cried tears of joy.” She’s been in a number of shows at The 5th since then, but a few holiday shows stand out (ELF, White Christmas) and always loves being “home” for the holidays. “The 5th always makes everyone feel like family with its own holiday traditions. The tree- trimming party is my favorite—just the coziest, most joyful day.” She brings this warmth and enthusiasm to every role she plays, and it shows. “Taryn is such a fun performer who brings a zest for life to all that she does,” Bill Berry says. “She always manages to make each moment mean more and add up to more than perhaps it did when you read it on the page.” When asked what she is excited about in Holiday Inn, Darr’s enthusiasm is hard to contain. “The fabulous dancing! The stunning costumes! My hilarious friends! This swoon- worthy era! And the cookies! There will be cookies, right?”

MATT OWEN as Ted Hanover “Matt is reminiscent of the ‘old school’ song and dance man who has miles of personality and exudes joy when he moves on stage,” says Bill Berry. Owen made his debut at The 5th in 2000 in Anything Goes and has performed in nearly two dozen productions since then. He says, “I think with experience comes confidence—knowing where my strengths lie, understanding how to better communicate with my fellow artists both on and off the stage and, like anything, the more you do something, the better you get.” After starring as Buddy in ELF: The Musical in The 5th’s 2012/2013 season, Owen is excited to spend his holidays at The 5th again. “Holiday shows are always great. There’s just a positive energy in the air. The audiences really get excited, and being in Seattle (where I grew up) during the holidays is just special. Also, there are usually FAR more delicious backstage sweets.”

22 SUPPORTING THE 5TH SUPPORTING THE THE 5TH AVENUE THEATRE’S CORPORATE COUNCIL THANK YOU TO OUR MEMBERS SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY, THE KIDS AND THE ART OF MUSICAL THEATER

On September 29th, The 5th Avenue Theatre’s Corporate Council kicked off the 2017/18 season with a private luncheon hosted by The Capital Grille featuring guest speakers Peter Rothstein (Director of Ragtime) and Bill Berry (The 5th’s Producing Artistic Director), who gave an insider’s view on the business of theater. The Council is made up of representatives from 5th Avenue Corporate Circle members who, through their annual gifts, support The 5th’s youth education programs which serve 75,000 students throughout the region each year. For more information on the Corporate Council or Corporate CORPORATE COUNCIL STANDING L TO R: Jennifer Williams, Patrick Smith, Jolene DiSalvo, Circle Membership please contact Sarah Gerry Gallagher, Patty MacDonald, Bill Berry, John Payes, Glenna Olson, Jeff Lewis, Shane Philpot. Bednar at [email protected]. SEATED: Eric Trott (co-chair), Louisa Barash, Peter Rothstein, Linda Anderson, Liz Wilson. NOT PICTURED: Ann Ardizzone (co-chair), Chris Bailey, Rich Blacharski, Ronnie Henderson.

CORPORATE CIRCLE MEMBER HomeStreet Bank has been a Corporate Circle member at The 5th for the past two years. Ronnie Henderson has been in Private Banking for 20 years SPOTLIGHT and joined The 5th’s Corporate Council last season.

WHAT MOTIVATED HOMESTREET BANK TO BECOME A CORPORATE CIRCLE MEMBER?

A partnership between HomeStreet Bank and The 5th seemed like a natural fit. We are able to thank our clients for their business by sending them to see amazing shows, while at the same time supporting Seattle’s local art scene. Personally, I have always loved The 5th and appreciate that it hires locally. WHAT DO YOU VALUE MOST ABOUT THE MEMBERSHIP?

Being able to represent my company on the Corporate Council. I really enjoy being a part of the Council because I meet amazing people that I otherwise would never have had the opportunity to connect with, and I learn about the business of theater. We have luncheons with the directors, writers and performers to hear what goes into putting a production together. I also love entertaining my clients at The 5th and sharing the behind-the-scenes stories that I learn at these luncheons. Ronnie V. Henderson TELL ME ABOUT A FAVORITE EVENT YOU HAVE HELD AT THE 5TH. Vice President, Private Banking Manager We hosted a HomeStreet Private Bank client event in the beautiful grand lobby of The 5th Avenue Theatre last year. It was a perfect night. HomeStreet shared important housing market updates and our guests enjoyed the theater, which we had all to ourselves. A highlight of the evening was a private backstage tour.
