6 7 Michael Schulman Culture Writer, The New Yorker

Roundabout has recently awarded the Jason Robards Award for Excellence in Theatre to such esteemed artists as Sam Mendes and TheHelen Mirren. But this year there are two winners, representing the two inextricable sides of show business: the show part and the business part. Audra McDonald is one of the great artists of the American stage, a genteel powerhouse who is as much a consummate actress as a sublime vocalist. Tom Tuft has served as Roundabout’s Chairman of the Board since 2007, the same year Audra gave her Tony-nominated performance in Roundabout’s 110 in the Shade. Last month, upstairs at the American Airlines Theatre, The New Yorker’s Michael Schulman sat down with both recipients, along with Artistic Director Todd Haimes.
