TOKYO MARATHON 2018 Wheelchair Elite Field
Wheelchair Elite Field Invited Wheelchair Athletes (Men) Invited Wheelchair Athletes (Women) Elite Wheelchair Athletes (Men) Elite Wheelchair Athletes(Women) January 22, 2018 (update: February 2, 2018) Tokyo Marathon Foundation Tokyo Marathon 2018 – Preview of Elite Wheelchair Race Tokyo Marathon Wheelchair Race Director Masazumi Soejima Because of the characteristics of the new course adapted for the 2017 edition of the race, I was imagining a faster winning time. However, perhaps because the course was new, the athletes were reluctant to push the pace and thus the winning time for the men’s race was relatively sluggish 1:28:01 while the winning time for the women’s race was also slow 1:43:27. Due to the lack of excessive undulation in the new Tokyo Marathon course, it may have been hard for the athletes to find the spot to make their move during the race. The final stretch of the race on Marunouchi Naka-dori Street gave trouble to athletes because the street is long and uphill and is covered with cobblestones, which makes hard to push the rims. Thus the race was decided over the final turn on to the Gyoko-dori Avenue. In 2017 the men’s race came down to six men going for the win, while the women’s race came down to three women competing for the top spot on the podium. This is the second year with the new course, and invited athletes were selected in hope that someone will make a big move during the race to make the race more exciting. Top elite athletes around the world are invited to this year’s Tokyo Marathon. -

World Para Athletics Marathon Championships
VIRGIN MONEY LONDON MARATHON 2019 #THANKSABILLION 05 WORLD PARA ATHLETICS MARATHON CHAMPIONSHIPS This year’s London Marathon will host the 2019 World Para Athletics world championship marathon races, as it did in 2015 when four world records were broken on the streets of the British capital. The event will replace the annual World Para Athletics Marathon World Cup, which was first held at the London Marathon in 2013 when races for ambulant para-athletes were added to a Race Day programme that had long included elite wheelchair competitions. In 2015, the World Cup was replaced by what was then called the IPC Athletics Marathon World Championships. This year’s event is called the World Para Athletics Marathon Championships. It includes five races for para athletes – three for ambulant runners and two for wheelchair racers. The World Cup will return in 2020 when London hosts the sixth edition. Haozhe Gao, Head of World Para Athletics, said: “London has staged top class para athletics marathon events for more than two decades and we are delighted to see the World Marathon Championships return to the city in 2019.” As well as winning World Championship medals, athletes in these races can also earn places on their nation’s teams for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. The top four athletes in each medal event will win a place at Tokyo 2020. The Events There will be five medal events at the 2019 World Para Athletics Marathon Championships, matching the marathon events to be held at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games: • T12: men’s and women’s (for visually impaired athletes in categories T11 & T12) • T46: men’s (for arm amputee athletes in categories T45 & T46) • T54: men’s and women’s (for wheelchair athletes in categories T52, T53 & T54). -
CDP CM Athl.
