Yet, something was missing. July Race Photos There were lots of people out there running half marathons. There were 5-6 also quite a few Maniacs looking to hang up the 26.2-mile distance and Achievements 7-8 sort of retire as half marathoners. They needed a place to call home too. July Race Photos 9-10 So, the idea of a second running club began to form. Half Marathon Maniacs? No, not right. Half Maniacs? Nope. Something similar but Regional Facebook Pages 11 different. Chris (HF #2) finally came up with a name that stuck. Upcoming Races 12 Our Marathon Maniac programmer, aka Brian Pendleton (HF #5), is an avid bird watcher. So, instead of a cat on the head, we updated the logo Gear/Fanatic Poll 13 to add a buzzard flying overhead. Also, to pay homage to the Gate Keeper Marc Frommer’s (HF # 4) curly locks sticking out of his running Flying Fanatic/Editor 14 hat, we gave the logo a “fro.” Then, after developing a website and database, the Half Fanatics club was born on July 4, 2009. Today, there New Members 15 are over 16,000 members and growing by leaps and bounds. Our Why 16-17 The main maniacs are thrilled that the Half Fanatics club has changed so many lives and facilitated thousands of friendships across the country and across the globe! Men’s field Stanley Biwott (KEN) will make his Bank of America Chicago Marathon debut as the seventh- fastest man in history over the marathon distance (2:03:51) and the 11th-fastest in history over the half marathon on a record-eligible course (58:56). Biwott made his mark in the Abbott World Marathon Majors with a victory at the 2015 TCS New York City Marathon, and with a standout performance at the 2016 London Marathon, finishing second to Eliud Kipchoge (KEN) in a career best, 2:03:51 (Biwott and Kipchoge share the 30K world record, 1:27:13, set during the London Marathon). Biwott has finished in the top five of 10 marathons. Feyisa Lilesa (ETH) gained international attention at the 2016 Rio Olympics when he finished the marathon with a silver medal. However, he initially made a name for himself in 2010 when, just two months after his 20th birthday, he became the youngest athlete to break 2:06 in the marathon with a 2:05:23 performance in Rotterdam. He has run well in Chicago, finishing third in 2010 and coming back in 2012 to chase Tsegaye Kebede (ETH) to the line for second place and a new personal best, 2:04:52.

    1 Kathrine Switzer: How One Run Broke the Barrier of Discrimination in Women’s Athletics Marlena Olson and Sam Newitt Junior Division Group Documentary Process Paper: 499 words 2 Kathrine Switzer challenged societal and legal barriers against women participating in distance running as the first woman to complete the Boston Marathon. Her landmark run increased women’s participation in sports and paved the way for the passage of Title IX. We are interested in running, and after initially researching Bobbi Gibb’s story, we discovered Kathrine Switzer. Switzer’s 1967 Boston Marathon run had a large amount of press coverage, which provided primary sources, and showed the cultural importance of her run. We began our research by reading secondary sources; we determined that a knowledge base was necessary to interpret primary sources. Next, we began locating primary sources, including photographs and newspapers from the 1960s. Additionally, a teacher suggested we interview Dr. Laura Raeder, who has run a marathon in every U.S. state. She provided insight on the integration of women in marathon running. Our school librarian assisted us in locating databases for both primary and secondary sources. We downloaded more than fifty historical newspaper articles from Newspapers.com, and we read Marathon Woman, Switzer’s autobiography. These primary sources helped ​ ​ demonstrate initial reactions from 1967. Although we located an abundance of sources, there was one source we sought but were not able to use: a direct interview with Kathrine Switzer. We emailed Switzer’s media director and requested a Skype interview. Switzer was not able to fulfill our request, however, the director sent us a press folder.

The team, recruited to compete against an accomplished international field, will challenge for the coveted olive wreath on Patriots’ Day, April 16, 2018. Four-time Olympian and 2017 TCS New York City Marathon champion Shalane Flanagan headlines the field along with two-time Olympic medalist and 2017 Bank of America Chicago Marathon champion Galen Rupp. Joining them are Olympians Desiree Linden, Dathan Ritzenhein, Abdi Abdirahman, Deena Kastor, and Molly Huddle, the latter of whom is the North American 10,000m record holder.
