An orphan, Apostoli won the Pacific Coast Junior Welterweight championship, Golden Gloves Middleweight championship, and the National AAU middleweight championship in 1934, and turned pro later that year. He quickly moved up the ladder and fought future middleweight champion Freddie Steele within his first seven months as a professional. Although, the more experienced Steele stopped him in 10 rounds, Apostoli went on to defeat top fighters such as Swede Berglund, Babe Marino, Babe Risko, Solly Krieger and Lou Brouillard to become the leading contender for the world championship. Eventually, Apostoli was matched with title claimant Marcel Thil; he defeated the Frenchman via a 10th round TKO. The New York Boxing Commission, however, still recognized Freddie Steele as champion. In 1938, Apostoli fought Steele in a non-title rematch and avenged his earlier defeat with a 9th round KO.

  • TRAGIC TWINS a Book Review by Roger Zotti
TRAGIC TWINS A book review by Roger Zotti “[When the Hogue twins were 31 years old,] they were still young men, but life had taken its toll on them. Shorty was living in a variety of care facilities, and Big Boy, who spent several years in and out of Atascadero Mental Hospital, appeared to have no discernible skills outside of the ring other than cheating at cards.” Harry Otty, The Tragedy of the Hogue Twins One Willard Joseph “Big Boy” Hogue and Willis Burton “Shorty” Hogue are their names, and boxing historian Harry Otty has written a meticulously researched, eminently readable, and informative book about them. Enhanced by many photos of the twins, family members, friends, and opponents, it’s titled The Tragedy of the Hogue Twins (REaD Corner). Harry’s intention is that readers take from his book the realization that “boxing, for all its hype and glamour, is a brutal sport and some of those who fight to entertain the fans don’t make as much money as the Floyd Mayweathers of this world. Most fighters come away with little in the way of tangible rewards and some come out with a lot less than what they went in with— as was the case with Shorty and Big Boy Hogue.” At first Otty, the author of the acclaimed Charley Burley and the Black Murderers’ Row, had no idea who the Hogues were, but after extensive research, he says, “I ended up in touch with family members, and then [learned more] about [the twins], and thought theirs was a tale worth telling.

At the age of one, he, along with his mother and father, traveled by wagon train to Seattle Washington, via the legendary Oregon Trail where they settled in 1886. His father, Phillip Leo, a political writer, former Scout for the Union Army, Civil war veteran at age 15 and a member of Cox’s army, was the Wagon Master on the trail. In 1896, young Jack traveled to Alaska, where he met the celebrated author, Jack London, whom he discovered was also an oyster pirate in San Francisco Bay. This, and many others of London’s adventures, influenced Jack’s approach to life. London renamed Johnny McKernan, Jack Kearns, after a character he wanted to eventually write about. He thought that person might be the type of character Johnny would emulate and since the now newly named Jack Kearns’s aspirations were to be a boxer, London thought of Kearns as a tougher sounding name. Young Kearns thought the name selection was providential since he had heard from his father that their first family member emigrating from Ireland in the early 1700’s, named John Dennis McKernan also had an alias, name of John Kearns.

  • Transnational Sporting Cultures and Practices in the Filipina/O Diaspora
EMBODYING SCALES OF FILIPINA/O AMERICAN SPORTING LIFE: TRANSNATIONAL SPORTING CULTURES AND PRACTICES IN THE FILIPINA/O DIASPORA BY CONSTANCIO REALIZA ARNALDO JR. DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Anthropology in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2015 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee Associate Professor Martin Manalansan IV, Chair Professor Alejandro Lugo Associate Professor Junaid Rana Associate Professor Richard T. Rodriguez Associate Professor Lisa Marie Cacho Abstract This multi-sited ethnographic study examines how Filipina/o Americans take up sporting cultures and practices in Southern California in the twenty-first century. Sporting cultures and practices broadly refers to playing, actively engaging, and consuming sports. Filipina/o Americans have long been involved in sports since the onset of U.S. colonialism in the Philippines and throughout their migration to, and settlement in the U.S. Despite this legacy, scholarly accounts have thus far neglected how sports are central to the Filipina/o American experience. I emphasize how sports figure prominently in the everyday lives of Filipina/o Americans by documenting the multiple sporting spaces they navigate, including internet sports websites, basketball gyms, sports tournaments, Manny “Pac-Man” Pacquiao family fight nights, Pacquiao boxing matches, and social media spaces. In particular, my work explores how power circulates across intersecting categories of difference, including, race, class, gender, and sexuality as they correspond with sport discourses, embodied meanings/gestures, spatialized practices and sporting ideologies and traditions. I argue that Filipina/o Americans’ involvement in sports provide complicated ways of understanding formations of identity, feelings of belonging, and claims to nationalism.
