B ob Soderman makes the following excellent suggestion: " It would be a good idea to ask all of the members to send in clippings on the deaths of all boxers. I would be very interested in this news. For those boxers whose records I have submitted: Cowboy Eddie Anrierson, Johnny McCoy, KO Christner, etc., are they still living? IBRO should be a clearing house for this information. When I do my microfilm studies, I always try to include deaths of boxers when I see them. If all members reported on all boxer deaths in their own local newspapers, this would be very worthwhile.

RECORDS

Records appearing in this newsletter were compiled by the following individuals:

Ritchie Fontaine - Jack Kincaid Johnny Kirk - Luckett Davis Lim Kee Chan - Lim Kee Chan (obtained by Tan Wee Eng) Tony Marino - Luckett Davis Joe McAuliffe - Bill Schutte As always, special thanks to Luckett Davis - John Grasso for reviewing the records submitted and - Jimmy Smith - Laurence - Fielding helping with the typing. Johnny Van Heest - Bill Schutte Frankie Wallace - Sal Rambo 20 SECOND COUNT

John Murphy, 133 Wellington Rd., Ma-ley, West Australia 6062, is interested in what he can find out"about a curious 20-second rule that seems to have operated in , and perhaps other parts, around 1934. Some of ' early opponents were given counts of 20 seconds before being declared knockout losers. The count seems to have applied when a fighter was knocked clear out of the ring. How long did this rule operate and where?"

JOHN WILKINSON UPDATE

Newsletter # 17 contained the complete record of IBRO member John Wilkinson along with some information on the 1984-85 Central State University boxing team. Some additions to that follow:

3/5/85 Vinny Lucas, Lowell, Mass. W 3 semi-finals, New England GG - 156 lbs 3/6/85 Ray Daniels, Lowell, Mass L 3 finals, N. E. G. G.

The CCSU team finished 3rd nationallyy this season behind the U.S. Air Force Academy and West Chester University. The U.S. M ilit ary Academy at West Point finished fourth. John Callas won the National Collegiate Boxing Assn. title at 125 lbs. on April 12 and 13 in West Chester, PA.

LIM KEE CHAN

IBRO was able to obtain a self - compiled record of Singapore boxer Lim Kee Chan in his own handwriting through the efforts of his good friend Tan Wee Eng. The record appears on page Wee Eng comments, "The sad thing is that most boxers' fighting records are not accurate ... reference hi remarks 'no cuttings, no dates & cannot remember What have you to say of his opponents 1) Fire Brigade Department Kid . presumably the chappie worked in the Fire Department 2) Speedy 7-Up ... this guy must have been a 7-Up drink addict 3) Fighting Kopi-Oh... Kapi-Oh is Black Coffee in local coffee or drink shops."

DONNY POOLE and LOUIE ESPINOZA

David Wolf, manager of Donny Poole and Louie Espinoza, as well as , has forwarded 22 pages of clippings on Poole and Espinoza along with their complete records. In addition to the usual won-lost information the number of knockdowns scored in each fight is included. In Poole's first 27 fights (17 ) through May 10, 1985, he has scored 38 knockdowns - an incredible average of 1.4 per bout. Espinoza, through Feb. 16, 1985 has recorded 13 knockdowns in his 15 bouts. Copies of the above records and clippings are available on reauest from IBRO.

SOUTH AMERICAN BOXING

B ob Diamond writes, " I recall reading that Eder Jofre was ahead on all three cards for a bout vs. Manny Elias but• that a fighter had to be ahead by at least three points in a non-title fight to gain a decision, otherwise the fight was a draw. Do you know if this is true? I wonder since Jofre had three draws in his early record, were they fights he was winning? Also, Carlos Monzon had 8 or 9 draws. Was this rule in effect in Argentina as well as Brazil? Perhaps someone familiar with South American boxing could find out who was actually-the winners in these early Jofre and Monzon fights." 5

TUG WILSON

IBRO Newsletter # 13 contained a record of bareknuckle fighter, Tug Wilson. Date of death was not included. The following piece from The Mirror of Life and Boxing World, June 22nd, 1912 ma•/ shed some light and help researchers find the exact date of his death.

"The death of Tug Wilson in a Hamilton () hospital last month recalls the most notable feat of the man who once claimed to be champion of England. Wilson, who was also known as James, or Long, Collins, was taken to America by Richard K. Fox to face John L. Sullivan, the Boston Terror. A bareknuckle fight between them could not be arranged, and at length Sully offered Wilson 1,000 dollars and half the gate receipts if he succeeded in lasting four rounds with him with the gloves.

"Th e affair, it can hardly be called a contest, created great interest at the time, and was brought off in Madison Square Gardens, New York, in July, 1882. The conditions of the match greatly favoured Wilson, and he took full advantage of them, going to boards for long counts on no fewer than nine occasions in the first round, so we are told. That was pretty galling to John L., who wanted to knock him out as quickly as he could, but stopping Sullivan's mighty right-handers was no part of Wilson's game, and what time he was not on the boards, he displayed, it is said, considerable merit as a sprinter. Anyway, he did what he set out to do, namely, last the four three - minute l iN'ough. Some years ago Wilson and the late Jem Mace were two or the attractions with a boxing booth that toured the country, and it wasprinted in large type on the bills that Wilson was the only Englishman to defeat the great John L. Sullivan Just how much of a defeat it was the reader can very easily guess."

SOUTH AFRICAN OLYMPIANS

Quite a few IBRO members are interested in learning of fighters' fortunes after they have left the ring. Chris Greyvenstein does an excellept job of this in his history of South African boxing, The Fighters (reviewed in newsletter '16, p. 9).

In a recent he writes, "By the way, you might be interested in the whereabouts of our Olympic Gold medallists. Clarence Walker, Willie Smith and Dave Carstens are dead. Laurie Stevens is retired as the owner of a sports outfitters in Johannesburg and lives in Durban. His health is frail but he looks good enough for a few more years. Ge rald Dreyer is a senior sales representative in his native Pretoria. I see him quite often as we have been friends since boyhood. George Hunter is still alive (he's only in his mid-fifties) but nobody ever hears from him. He fought for a couple of years as a pro but without startling success, unlike Gerald who won the Empire welter title (in those days we were still part of the British Empire), enjoyed a Ring magazine world rating and fought Chuck Davey once.

"Other Olympians who are still very much around are Vic and Willie Toweel, Johnny Arthur and Daan Bekker. Vic, who held the professional bantam title 1950 -52 is a much revered South African sportsman. Brother Willie who was a world-rated pro for maly years and fought the likes of Jimmy Carter, Orlando Zulueta, Dave Charnley, Len Matthews, Emil e Griffith and who boxed a draw in a world title fight with Robert Cohen, is manager -trainer of Piet Crous, who recently won the world title from Ossie Ocasio. Vic attends fights but has never bothered to train or manage anyone. Johnny Arthur is a wealthy businessman in the Eastern Transvaal, pax) Bekker is a police officer who does a fair amount of training of boxers. Willie Ludick is a lay preacher and has nothing to do with boxing. His son, Edwin, is one of the best high jumpers in Africa. " 8

BAREKNUCKLE NOTES - Peter Hatton

Continuing with his research into the middleweights in the mid 19th century, Peter Hatton writes in a letter dated 16 April:

"What I've been looking at in this vacation is Nat Langharn who was clearly responsible like Randall for creating the concept of thomiddleweight division WITH THAT N AME (unlike Randall's 'Champion of the Lighter Weights'.) What happens when he retires seems quite clear. He becomes manager of Bob Travers (a Negro 'Massa Ebony') and plans to establish Bob as his accepted successor. The main reasons why no one makes this claim are that both Sayers and Mace are within 7 pounds of 154 but with renewed interest in and not that much talent in the Open category (1855 is the public subscription for the Open Belt) a separate claim would seem inappropriate and Open contesting was more lucrative and not at an impossible weight disadvantage.

"The two leading under 154s were Bob Brettle of Birmingham and Travers. Travers had beaten all the leading other self-designated middle4&9hts: Mike Madden (to whom Mace forfeited in 1E3 George Crockett, Bill Hates and Jesse Holton. Bretton's claim would have been the stronger as he beat Travers in 1858 and then Mace on 21 September 1858. He now looked like a possibility for an Open contender. Sayers by this stage was in correspondence for a U.S. challenge from Heenan or Jones and was probably going to retire thereafter. Bretton was unsure whether he was aiming for middle now or Open after Sayers.

"Th ey agreed to meet NOT FOR ANY TITLE in order not to prejudice Sayers' American negotiations. They met at Ashford, Kent on 20 September 1859 and Sayers won easily in 6 rounds and 15 minutes (Ring Record Book please add to Sayers record). The beating was bad enough to cause Brettle to not be so good afterwards and a further loss to Mace (21 September 1860) -.,nd he was out of the top flight. Travers had challenged Mace (21-22 February.1860) and his disqualification under rule 13 (wilfully throwing himself down without receiving a blow') destroyed his style (and would have equally been applicable to Langham in his victory over Scyers). The rule was added (to Broughton's 1743 Rules) in the New Rules of 1838 (and had been added to the articles of many fights from 1805). It was necessary because losers were stringing out fights and some ridiculous 'no contests' were occurring when both fighters were cautious. However, it seems harsh to use it against fighters like Langham and Travers who aimed to win by long range blows to the head. Its stricter application in 1860 seems to have led cr) a greater emphasis on close-range wrestling and falling on one's opponent in a throw as a means of exhausting him and may well have contributed to the Marquis of Queensbury feeling the need to draw up his rules in 1867.

"That is all for this vacation. surface again in July."

(ed. note - Peter Hatton is a professor of history at Cambridge who spends his vacations from school researching bareknuckle boxing.)

CHARIOTS OF FIRE - Part 2

George Ross, 59/34 Norman Terrace, Everard Park, South Australia 5035 forwards a clipping from an Adelaide newspaper about the recent Oceania Games.

It reads in part," Victorian fighter Joe Huljak placed religious beliefs before an Oceania championship gold medal. He was disqualified from the final yesterday because he weighed in over the limit, but the real reason goes bock to Saturday night. It was then that the 19-year-old Hulick won a unanimous over Ming Ching Shiao of Chinese Taipei in a semi-final. After the fight the Catholic boxer told his trainer, Derek Herbert, of Collingwood, that he would forfeit the final against Renato Cornett, of NSW, because of his religious beliefs. Toowoomba priest Father Tom Sheeran, a referee at the titles, 'etas asked to speak with Hulick about the predicament. But after the talk, Hulick remained adamant that he would not fight. Yesterday, Hulick ate a hearty breakfast and then headed off with Herbert for the 8 a.m. wei•h-in for the cham ionshi final. A check welsh b Herbert Oust before 10

MORRIE BLOOM

In addition to his maly other activities in his status of semi-retirement, David Bloch writes a weekly sports column for the Richmond Jewish New. The following is an excerpt from a --ecent column.

A Visit To Chicago

I have recently returned from Chicago where . welterweight title from 1914 to 1917. True, his claim DOROTHY and I had another enjoyable meeting with was never universally recognized, and, sadly enough, HARRY HELLER and his wife, GLADYS. Harry, who none of the modern record books list his name as a is the Sports Editor of the Chicago Jewish Sentinel, is titular claimant, but the fact remains that 1 have seen a also a member of the Illinois Basketball Collegiate number of articles in Illinois papers and magazines Association's (IBCA) Hall of Fame. Naturally, our referring to him as the former champion. The most conversation centered around Jews In Sports and the recent column I have seen appeared in Leo Fisher's approaching Maccabiah Games. Chicago American Column of December 23, 1953 in On the following day I visited the Spertus College of which this respected sports writer alluded to Bloom's Judaica where I researched the fistic career of MORRIE contention. BLOOM, an excellent Chicago boxer. Born MORRIS Was Morris actually a world champion? Purists will BLUMBERG, he started his career in 1905 as a probably say no, but I suggest that his claim was as flyweight and eventually retired after World War I as a good as other claimants during at least part of that welterweight with over 200 bouts to his credit. chaotic period in the 147-pound division. DID HOLD THREE TITLES AT THE SAME TIME BEFORE ARMSTRONG PERFORMED THAT FEAT?

by Paul Zabala

The answer to that question hinges on whether the Junior Welterweight title had any official recognition during May 1934 when Ross may have accomplished that feat.

But first- Ross did not give up the lightweight crown in 1933 but did so on April 15, 1935, when he was under suspension by the New York Athletic Commission for refusing to defend his lightweight crown against Lew Ambers. Ross gave weight problems as the reason for abdicating.

New York withdrew recognition of the Junior Lightweight and Junior Welterweight titles on December 31, 1929. The NBA did the same on September 20, 1932. However, Illinois- Ross' home state- dropped out of the NBA on February 23, 1933, and presently I don't know if it recog- nized Ross as the Junior Welterweight champion. The same is the case with California (an independent body until it joined the NBA on Sept- ember 7, 1940).

A good many boxing experts never thought much of the junior titles. This was especially true in Europe where, I believe, none of the boxing bodies extended recognition.

Lord Lonsdale, at ringside for the Berg-Callahan contest, disputed the announcer who said that there was such a class as the junior welter- weight division (see Gilbert Odd, ENCYCLOPEDIA OF BOXING, page 183).

A forgotten effort to revive that class, which produced a forgotten champion, ws made in 1941 when and Alabama recognized HARRY WEEKLY as world Junior Welterweight champion (see Weekly in 1943 RING RECORD BOOK). -

The August 3, 1935 NEW YORK TIMES reported that the New York Athletic Commission turned down Ross' request to sanction a lightweight title bout between him and the then titleholding Tony Canzoneri. The Commission said that Ross would have to first qualify in that class!

This fact, plus the low poundage Ross showed in many of his pre:1936 title bouts lead me to believe that he, like Armstrong, might better be listed among the all-time lightweight champions instead of among the welterweight champions. 17

INFORMATION AND QUERY FROM GEORGE BLAIR "I recently came across an article by JOCK MALONE and in it he talked of his erly career. Please add the following two fights to Malone's record.. Mar 28,1916- Fred Munger, Marshfield Wi W 10 (Pro debut) 1916- Young White, Marshefield Wis W 10 Malone also said that after the White fight his manager took him east for the rest of 1916 where he fought main events under the name of JOHNNY MURPHY." George wants to know if any IBRO members have a record of fights by Malone under the name of Murphy.

RESPONSE BY LUCKETT DAVIS I have searched most of the issues of the FREE- PRESS in the 1916-1918 period. On looking at this material I was surprised to find a bout scheduled at Marshfield, Wis- consin on March 25, 1916 between JOHNNY MURPHY and Fred Munger. Unfortunately the next two or three issues are missing from my material, so I could find no report of the outcome. This seems to show that Malone fought as "Johnny Murphy" in . Also, Paul Zabala's list of. record changes (in this issue of the NEWSLETTER) shows the date and location of Malone's 1916 fight in New York with Harry Gattle, in which he used his own name. It looks as though Malone was a bit confused about when he used the name of "Johnny Murphy."

COMMENT BY DAVE BLOCH ON "KID WOLFE" BOUTS IN 1925

Dave says "I believe that the Jack Kid Wolfe bouts in 1925 with Young Dencio and , actually belong to the Philadelphia fighter, HENRY KID WOLFE...Jackie Kid Wolfe was fighting as a featherweight at that time (1925) while Genaro, and I think Dencio, were ."

RESPONSE BY LUCRETT DAVIS The revised record of Jack (Kid) Wolfe in the 1983 and 1984 RING RECORD BOOKS omits these bouts. Genaro's record shows a bout with "Kid Wolfe," 16 February 1925. A record for YOUNG DENCIO in IBRO NEWSLETTER # 14, page 25, shows a 12 round loss by Dencio to "Young Kid Wolfe" in , 4 February 1925. THE INTERNATIONAL BOXING BLADE, 28 February 1925, page 6, states: "Frankie Genaro defeated Henry (Kid) Wolfe, ten rounds, at Philadelphia, Pa, Feb. 16th." The BLADE for 21 February 1925, page 6, says: "Kid Wolfe defeated Young Denico (sic), at Baltimore, Md., Feb. 4th." So, Dave is proved right for the Genaro-Wolfe fight in 1925, and is almost certainly right.about the Dencio-Wolfe fight. 18

ADDITIONAL. BOUTS AND RECORD CORRECTIONS FOR CHAMPIONS AND CLAIMANTS

from Paul Zabala

Paul Zabala has supplied a list of new bouts and corrections for champions, claimants, and fighters whose records have appeared in early issues of the NEWSLETTER. Many of these bouts have been found, and possibly reported, by others earlier. However, it is too time consuming to go back and check each entry for duplication so, with certain excep- tions, the list is presented as it was received. However Paul's explanations of the corrections are omitted for reasons of space and typing time. The items listed here should be checked against existing published records of the fighters in question. Newspaper decisions are underlined. The sources of each report is shown, using the following initials: SUS = SCHENECTADY UNION-STAR ATU = ALBANY TIMES-UNION NYT = NEW YORK TIMES GFT = GLEN FALLS TIMES S = SARATOGIAN (SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY) EKP = ALBANY KNICKERBOCKER-PRESS CT = CHICAGO TRIBUNE AEJ = ALBANY EVENING JOURNAL SG = SCHENECTADY GAZETTE 7/29/18 ko Billy Ryan, 4, Jersey City NYT 12/29/19 Jack Kid Wolfe def Earl Puryear, 10, ATU 4/10/18 Frank Carbone ko Johnny Wilson, 1, Newport RI ARP 2/25/20 Johnnu McCoy def Blockie Richards 10 Cleveland SUS 11/25/20 & Willie Spencer ND, 6, Phi. la NYT 4/8/25 def Lee Sheppard, 10, Philadelphia NYT 5/25/26 Bushy Graham ko Dom Petrone, 10, NYC NYT 7/30/26 Bushy Graham clef Joe Ryder, 10, Albany 2/21/24 Mike Ballerino def Joe Souza, 10, Brooklyn NYT 3/14/24 Mike Ballerino def Joe Ryder, 12, NYC NYT 5/5/27 Red Herring def Art Lee, 10, Glen Falls NY GFT 9/2/27 Johnny McCoy def Britt Gorman, 10, Hollywood 4/11/28 Jimmy Jones def Gilbert Attell, 4, Oakland 5/27/15 Johnny Wilson def KO Sweeney, 10, NYC NYT 1/21/15 def Jimmy Clabby, 10, Milwaukee NYT 5/31/15 Mike Gibbons 8: Soldier Bartfield drew,10, NYC NYT 5/31/15 Batt. ADDITIONS AND CORRECTIONS

John Robertson points out that the 1984 edition of the RRB lists the second Johansson Patterson bout as a KO 4 in Patterson's record. It is correctly listed as a Fifth round knockout in both Johansson's record and in the summary of world heavyweight championship bouts.

He also reports that the 12/16/54 bout between Carmen Ba3ilio and Ronnie Harper ended in the third round and not the fourth as recorded in Basilio's record. His source for this correction was the local Cambridge, Ontario daily.

Bill S c h utte adds thp following bout to the record of Billy Hanrahan that was listed on page 51 of newsletter ff17: March 18, 1902 Jack Beauscholte, Chicago D 6

NOTES: On 18 May 1921, Kirk was found guilty of stealing $3,000. worth of liquor from.a truck in November 1920, and received a prison sentence. This record is based on reports in THE PITTSBURGH POST. All newspaper decisions are those given by the POST. A record for Kirk, lacking dates, was published in the POST, 9 December 1917. This record may be complete, but any additions or corrections will be welcome. If any IBRO member knows the date and location of Kirk's death (if not still alive), please let me know. Kirk's fight in 1920 with Johnny Ray terminated in a brawl. Afterwards, the referee (Louden Campbell) stated that he disqualified Ray, but the decision was not made known immediately because of the disorder that prevailed.

Noes -

1 - Most of the bouts at Fort Thomas were probably no decision bouts. The report of the 12/1 bout stated that "inasmuch as official decisions are not permitted at the Fort" ....

2 - Opponent on 4/30, 5/26 and 6/4 was the same but was spelled differently in each of the reports.

3 - 8/17 - Miller scheduled for 4 against Jimmie Gordon in Middletown, Ohio - It's possible that Al Proctor subbed for Gordon, though. No result shown.

4 - 9/2 - Miller scheduled against Bulldog Fisher for 6 rounds at Middletown, Ohio - no result shown.

5 - 7/13/27 bout between and Billy Drako at Cincinnati ball park was advertised for the world welterweight title. Both fighters weighed less than 147 lbs. The referee was Frank "Pop" O'Brien of Philadelphia and Dundee received the "popular decision" at the end of the scheduled 10 rounds.

6 - According to an AP article on 7/2 - boxing was to be legalized in effective 7/4/27. It had been barred since 1873. Ten round no decision bouts were allowed. A State Boxing Commission was formed.

7 - A 6/4/27 article describing bouts at the Humboldt Arena in Mt. Washington, Ohio stated that 10 rounds was the maximum there and that no decisions were permitted.

8 - Report of the "first world title fight in Cincinnati" between Miller and Battalino - 7/23/31 listed the weights as Bottalino, 125 1/2 and Miller 124 3/4. RRB has Miller at 124.

9 - In 6/28/27 paper - "Boxing will become legal in Alabama Tomorrow for the first time since 1886 when Governor Graves signs a bill authorizing 10 round no decision bouts. A committee of three members will regulate the sport."
