China Daily 0807 C6.Indd 6 olympics TUESDAY, AUGUST 7, 2012 CHINA DAILY Chen bows out silver effort By IAN RANSOM in London Reuters China’s gymnastics captain Chen Yibing kissed his silver medal and beamed at the crowd but admitted to feeling short-changed by the judges when he was pipped by Brazil’s Arthur Zanetti for the rings gold in his fi nal Olympic Games on Monday. The 27-year-old Chen, a three-time Olympic champion dubbed the “King of Rings” by adoring Chinese fans, appeared to have the title sewn up aft er a strong per- formance and a solid landing. He was stunned, however, when the Bra- zilian, the last competitor to take the rings, scored 15.900 to pip him by 0.1 of a point, despite taking a step back on his landing. “It’s still good, it’s a silver medal,” the ami- able Chen said with a laugh. “I was a little bit surprised ... Seeing him not stand (perfectly) on the landing, I thought I would have beaten him. But when the score came out he was the winner. But I still have to congratulate him. I really did bring my best today.” Chen kissed the red frame of the appara- tus aft er his routine and waved the “num- ber one” fi nger at television cameras, but walked out of the arena as runner-up for a prolonged interrogation by a large throng of Chinese reporters. He promptly announced his retirement. “I decided before these Olympics because my body has a few injuries and there’s a lot of new talents coming through,” he said. Chen, who had already taken a men’s team gold here last week, injured his knee training in Northern Ireland two weeks before the Games. CUI MENG / CHINA DAILY State media quoted his team as saying it was a China’s gymnast Chen Yibing celebrates after fi nishing his routine in the men’s rings fi nal at the London Olympic Games on Monday at the North Greenwich Arena. PUBLIC SPORTS POLICY: THE IMPACT OF THE ATHLETE … Vol. 4 Issue 1: 5 - 19 PUBLIC SPORTS POLICY: THE IMPACT OF THE ATHLETE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM ON BRAZILIAN MEN’S ARTISTIC GYMNASTICS Mauricio Santos Oliveira1 & Marco Antonio Coelho Bortoleto2 1Physical Education and Sports School, University of São Paulo, Brazil 2Physical Education Faculty, State University of Campinas, Brazil Original research article Abstract The Brazilian government established the Athlete Scholarship Program, by Law no10.891/2004, aiming to contribute for athletes’ economical support, development and permanence in sports and to renew the Brazilian representation in national and international competitive events. This study intends to present the program and to discuss its impact on Brazilian Men’s Artistic Gymnastics (MAG) according to the opinion of Brazilian experts. A bibliographic review has been used as methodological procedure, followed by a field survey consisting of semi-structured interviews applied to Brazilian representatives, coaches, judges and world-class gymnasts. The results revealed the important role of the Athlete Scholarship Program on the gymnasts support, however other actions are necessary to solve structural and financial problems that still affect this sport in Brazil. We suggest some changes in the program in order to increase the number of scholarships offered, to minimize the bureaucracy application and to make clearer the enrollment rules, the accountability and the selection process. • Still Rings Handstand Development Page 1 of 3
USA Gymnastics Online: Technique: Still Rings Handstand Development Page 1 of 3 Still Rings Handstand Development By Kelly Crumley The handstand on rings is a bit more complicated than a handstand on floor or parallel bars simply because the rings move and the other pieces of equipment do not! There are literally hundreds of drills and exercises that can be done to develop the handstand. The handstand is a never-ending area of refinement. The better the handstand is, the better the gymnast will be. There are two main objectives in which to focus when developing the handstand: Strength and Balance. Both of these are addressed below. The Handstand Position The handstand must first be developed on floor and then later applied to rings. The desired position as it applies to floor is as follows: The hands should be placed on the floor shoulder width apart with the middle finger perpendicular with an imaginary line drawn between them. The fingers should be spread in order to help produce a wide base of support. Weight should be dispersed to the finger tips. The body should not be entirely supported on the palms of the hand. Balance is controlled at the finger tips. The elbows are locked and turned so that the inside of the elbow faces straight forward. The head is positioned neutral with ears between the arms. There should be equal parts of the head on both sides of the arm so that the line of the arms, bisect the head equally when viewing from the side. The eyes are focused on the floor between the hands.

Eight new elements named, added to the Men’s Gymnastics Code of Points 04/04/2017 It is a way of achieving immortality in Gymnastics: the gymnast who has an original skill named after them in the Code of Points assures that his or her name will live on in the sport, years after they have taken their final bows on the international stage. This week, the FIG Men’s Technical Committee approved eight new elements to be named for the gymnasts who performed them. All were done successfully at World Cup events in late 2016 and early 2017, and will be published in the Men’s Code of Points.
